All my current profiles are listed in the main ET-8550 written review at www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/ If you would like to experiment with the profiles I've created, please email me at Northlight Images: keith@northlight-images.co.uk All I ask for the profiles is a Ko-Fi donation if you find them helpful ko-fi.com/keithcooper

The ET 8550 seems to have an abnormally-small buffer. The device I use to send a file for print is tied up almost the entire printing time, spoon-feeding lines of the image to the printer. Ot would be nice if putting a camera card in the printer's card slot added to the buffer size.

What do you mean by 'device' in this instance?

A question for clarification: I understand the difference between "media setting" and a "profile." And when using a third-party paper (or a Canon paper on an Epson printer, and vice versa), you must select both variables separately.
But what about if you are printing on an Epson paper supported by your Epson printer. I have been assuming that after selecting the approprite media type, I should then select "printer manages color." Am I correct to assume that this last selection activates a hidden paper profile built into the printer driver?
    Thx for any clarification.
    -Matt

The printer manages colour option is for using the driver's internal 'colour management' - yes, there is 'secret sauce' in there somewhere ;-)
However If I was printing on an Epson, via EPL for example, when you select a media type, it will look for a default profile associated with that media type - this would be the auto setting. If I have another profile I want to use [say one of mine for an Epson paper] I would select the media type and then manually select the paper profile I wanted to use.
If I was printing from photoshop, I'd select PS Manages colour and the profile I wanted to use [epson's or mine] and then select the media type in the driver [where colour management would be turned off].
So, the media type can 'push' a certain profile in some circumstances, but in general, 'Printer manages colour' is only something I'd use with say the B&W print mode [ABW for Epsons]
Other software may behave differently in using the media type's default - in general though I always select the profile I actually want to use.

Thank you, I feel you made this video for me. This means that any printing you do with that profile, you will always use VFA as the media because that’s the media used to create the profile. Correct?

Yes - only use the media setting used for making the profile

Your videos have been really helpful getting me up to speed. I'm making progress on my Canon IPG Pro 1100. I'm trying to figure out if/how i'll be able to profile and print on what i'll call *weird* media, e.g. magnetic sheets, stickers, transparencies, repositional, wood sheets, velvet etc. From what I'm reading, the

Ah, I can only test this sort of stuff when suppliers send me samples of media, and I have a suitable printer here.
As you say, it's quite specialised. I do enjoy doing it as a challenge, but not as a business ;-)
You don't say where you are though for profile making? [I'm based in the UK, but I see visitors from all over the world...]

@@KeithCooper Yes, I'm looking at all these media options and wondering how I'll make my money back tinkering with them all (spoiler: I won't :D). Although I may be able to work towards a local art installation with some ideas I have. Anyway, I'm in the "united" states.

I'd suggest giving Red River paper a call and asking if they recommend anyone - they know the local market and probably some suggestions where to check?

Hi Keith. Last week I tried to make a print with the G650 on Canon matt that ,for the first time, wanted to be like the pic on the pc screen. Nowhere near. You have immense info on your channel but I'm not sure where to start / prioritise things. Could you briefly bullet point say 1st monitor callibration 2nd media or something to get to grips with this? Or refer to a vid of yours. Anyone else can chip in.

Hey Keith, love your reviews on the ET8550, got one for myself. Just a question, occasionally it seems to print blanks. The files I sent to the printer are not blanks it just seem to take a sheet, cycle it through and then just pass it through the printer without actually putting any ink on it. I've also has moment when it only print part of it before cycling it through. Any experience with this issue?

Hi Keith, really good video/info. I have some older Epson printer paper I purchase years ago that no longer match the printer paper names include for the ET-8550. For example, I have some older Epson Matte Heavyweight paper, but I don't see that paper type listed? Same thing the the glossy paper, names are different. I guess they want you to discard the older paper and buy the newer stuff? Any suggestions?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  3 дня назад

Yes, names do change. The place to look is the paper specs, look at gsm, thickness [not the same thing] as well as general characteristics.
The Epson matte heavyweight will work with the printer just fine - I can't remember the current version, but it will work OK... See the various papers I've listed in my 8550 review

I have a P900. I use both Archival Matte and Matte Paper- Heavyweight ( it was cheap). The Matte Paper-Heavyweight instructions say to use Premium Presentation Paper Matte as the Paper Type. If that is not available use Epson Matte or if they are both not available use Matte Paper- Heavyweight.
None are available in my selections but Archival Matte is present . Interestingly the Matte paper- Heavyweight is lighter per m squared than the Archival Matte paper.
I used the Media Installer to create a new EMX file titled Matte Paper- Heavyweight mainly so i could keep track of the costs in the LFP Accounting tool however I did change the paper thickness from Archival Matte default as Matte paper- Heavyweight is thinner.
The ICC profile I used was the Epson P700-P900 Archival Matte supplied by Epson. The prints are excellent with the Archival Matte on both types of paper.

    • @KeithCooper

Thanks - I do have some, which gets included in many reviews. However, my paper testing is limited by what companies send me to test.
Nothing against them - they make somer great papers [hint hint], but I cannot afford to buy stuff just for testing - I have a room with shelves stacked high with rolls and boxes ;-)
