  • #ThinkWINTER - From the Mountaineering Scotland Website:
    For many of us winter is when our mountains come into their own. Dazzling white snow under blue skies, crisp underfoot with views stretching to forever with crystal clarity; the scrape and bite of crampons on ice, the thunk as a well-swung ice-axe embeds itself securely in perfect snow-ice. Even the white-out, the numbing wind and the face-shredding blizzard are part of the sensory treat that is a Scottish mountain winter. And we love it all.
    But we have to be honest: many of Scotland’s mountains are serious undertakings, particularly so in winter conditions, and will require skills and equipment beyond those needed for normal summer hill walking.
    Before starting on winter mountaineering you should first make sure your navigation and hillcraft skills are up to scratch under summer conditions and then look to develop those skills so that you are ready for the added challenges of winter. Mountaineering Scotland runs specific winter navigation courses, winter skills and avalanche awareness courses to help you gain or improve skills.

    Amazing stuff, enjoying yourselves like wee kiddies, if you have wee uns, bet you can't wait until you can get them up on the hills to enjoy times like that, cos that's what it's all about really, teaching your kids to enjoy the wild.

    Good one, you must climb the hill twice what with all the coming and going with the camera. Nice to see the winter munros as they are too far for me in winter so I tend to stick to the border hills. Cheers.

    Ben Vorlich looks absolutely majestic with the snow cover. I've got to admit I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to tackling the hills during winter. Videos like these make me jealous.
    I've only just found your channel today but am enjoying watching your content. The filming and editing is so professional. Happy to call myself a new subscriber. :)

      Hey Ewan, Thank you for your kind comments. There’s a few things to learn about winter walking but don’t let the snow put you off. Find a hill you’re comfortable with and just go for it. You can always come back down if you’re not feeling it. Maybe choose one that’s likely to be reasonably busy. Anyway, HNY and thanks again. L&D 😀🙏

    Nice one guys. My first ever winter hill, nae ice axe or crampons and nearly came a cropper. Lessons well learned that day.

      Kevin Russell we could probs have just used our walking sticks and it would have been fine on that snow. Once it freezes though, different story. Every day is a learning day! Thanks for watching mate. Marry Xmas from us both. 🎄❄️😀🙏

    Stunning video with beautiful wintry vistas, I’m so jealous of these adventures. When do you use crampons as it seemed slippy in places or was the snow too powdery?

    • @ontheadventuretrails-scotl9389
      @ontheadventuretrails-scotl9389  4 года назад +1

      Hey Brian, Thank you, we really do appreciate comments like yours, makes the effort worthwhile.
      Although I slipped a few times in the shots I chose it really wasn’t that bad. I was stepping on rocks or grass just under the snow. The snow wasn’t great (compact and frozen), neither were the consequences of a slip so we chose not to use them. We did have them with us though. To be honest we probably didn’t need to use our ice axes either. All specific choices we made given the conditions on that day, and at that time. Thanks again. 🙏😀❄️

  • @jonathandorward
    @jonathandorward 4 года назад +1

    Just started following you.Beautiful !! Don't you use crampons if it gets to slippery.? Cheers & thanks for sharing.

    • @ontheadventuretrails-scotl9389
      @ontheadventuretrails-scotl9389  4 года назад

      Hey Jonathon, HNY! those little slips were on rocks just under the snow. Snow was very soft and for the most part manageable. We did have crampons with us and if the snow was harder we’d probably have had them on. Thank you for watching and following! 😀🙏
