I ate surströmming for the first time today and it really wasn't that bad. We opened the can under water and washed the brine out of it. The wind carried away most of the smell. It tasted awfully salty and there was a slight hint of shit in its taste but mind you, I ate it straight from the can with just a slice of bread. With some flatbread, potatoes, creme fraiche and onions (the way these guys ate it) it's probably pretty good. Still, I didn't gag or puke it's just something I'd not recommend on its own.
