- This video and the other I'm posting is for my wonderful online friends who have encouraged me to put more of my own playing out there. You'll hear a lot of trip-ups and some of the keys on my piano do not play, but I definitely think I got in the mood for playing these two. I hope you enjoy it and please go easy on me, it's not meant to be a professional/representative performance.
Dude. This absolutely needs to go viral. You killed it!
Oh thank you so much for your kind words!! Fingers crossed haha!
You said it and it certainly did go viral! 1.7 thousand views already!
I'm left-handed yet terrible on piano with the left side without a lot of practice. That last part is a life goal.
Hope you achieve it, man.
You can do it! Just go slowly and make sure you are doing everything right, so that when you speed it up it will not catch up with you. Thank you so much for your comment!
What an unimaginable performance! Thank you!
Thank you so much, friend! May I ask you, did you get a notification that I posted this? I used the RUclips Studio app on Android, and I don't know if it sent notifications to my subscribers...
@@rowanbelt3612 It sent me both of your videos as notifications on RUclips.
And on my main phone.
@@peternewseterforever Good to hear, thanks.
This came up during my auto play for music and it scared me. I’m talking almost sound asleep and then BOOM! Here’s a piano jumpscare!
Hahaha I'm sorry 😆
@@rowanbelt3612 don’t apologize! I’m glad you did! Got to enjoy some fun music and also remember to do some work!
Ummm I'm not sure why i didn't get this notification, but i discovered it now and i can you tell, I've heard dozens and dozens of Maple Leaf Rag renditions over decades, and this one my friend, ranks in the top 5 of my favorites! Wow!! Phenomenal.
It's an honor that you say so! Thank you so much my friend! I posted this specifically with you in mind because I know it's associated with Jo Ann Castle. :)
@rowanbelt3612 Awe, thanks, man! If I said I've listened to her play that at least 500 times in my lifetime, it wouldn't be an exaggeration. So because of that, I know factually that you've added a few amazing nuances here that she does not have in her recorded versions. It's commendable.
I really love the playing there, it left me speechless and just a smile.
especially the past part that sounds so powerful
That's amazing. Thank you so much. I'm so glad you enjoyed.
This sounds awesome! This is probably one of the few times that I've listened to the rest of the song, but it still slaps!
Thank you!! That's so great to hear! You might enjoy the Blake Carmichael wellstood and Sutton version. 4 pianists playing it at the same time back in the 60s. It is hair raising.
@@rowanbelt3612 thanks! I'll check it out
@@rockz9783 actually looks like the video was taken down. If you find a 50 minute long video called "Those Ragtime Years", the performance begins just before the 47 minute mark.
@@rowanbelt3612 oh, thank you!! I also got another version of the maple leaf rag at the 46 minute mark. I'll listen to the entire video if i get time, really sounds good
Ye olde pianner is absolutely rocking! Superb stuff, and the piano has just the perfect sound for this type of music.
Thank you so much!!
@@rowanbelt3612 your most welcome, but the thanks is to you for showing us your magnificent talent!
Well, that was pretty cool! A very nice version that actually improves on the original. Love the change-up at 1:15 that sets the tone for what's to come.
Playful and creative. Scott would love it!
Thank you! Maple Leaf Rag is played so much that I think we all need to try and put our own spin on it haha.
Great job! ☀️🤩
Thank you :)
This is awesome!! I was surprised this was uploaded so recently, this feels like an old youtube piano-playing classic!
Thank you so much! You are very kind. I definitely see how this kind of has the vibe of old RUclips, with the focus on just sharing something rather than production quality etc. That's what I was going for!
I wish I had that talent.
You are too kind. You can learn too! I can tell you from experience that the fun and gratification is not in being able to do certain things, but in being able to do something you couldn't last week :)
the notes are so fluid. good performance
Thank you!
Absolutely the best version I've ever heard of this.
Wow. Thank you so much.
Love the embellishments, if I had a honkey tonk like that my life would be complete lol
Thank you friend, I hope you will have the chance to get a piano like that in the future!
What I wouldn't give to be just half that good. What a fantastic gift. Thanks so much for sharing with us. Jim
Thank you for coming back to leave another wonderfully kind comment! Have a beautiful day!
I love this rendition of maple leaf rag! It’s so much fun and you put so much personality into it. Others just play it by the notes but you put passion into it!!! ❤ this is the ragtime I’ve been waiting for haha
Thank you so much! Your words really mean a lot to me! I'm very happy you enjoyed it
I very often come back to this wonderful rendition of this challenging piece so that I don't give up. It really inspires me to keep at it!
And by the way folks, don't bother looking for a better version of this piece, because you just found it. Period.
Beautifully played with a dynamic flow from start to finish!
Simply beautiful!!! I love the retro piano too!
Thank you so much! 😊
Beautiful job! I'm using this video as a source of inspiration for my own piano adventures.
Thank you so much! I wish you the best of luck!
Excellent style m8! You play with such a convincing musical spirit. Brilliant performance. Love the contrasting ideas too. A very musical player.
Thank you so much, it means a lot, especially coming from a clearly distinguished musician such as yourself :)
By far the best version of Maple leaf I've ever heard. Well done sir
That's an incredible compliment. Thank you so very much🙏
You absolutely killed it. Why haven't I discovered your channel before now ?? Thanks a million for your fantastic video. Please keep them coming. Jim
Thank you so much for your kind compliments sir. I will make sure to post more soon!
Great stuff Rowan I like your repertoire choice! Joplin / Ragtime was my first musical love and has a special place in my heart always.
Love this song you do good justice to it Scott would love it play that old pianah.bro
Thank you :)
Your style matches that of Tom Brier by adding tones on the bass, and the echo you generate with the pedal arrangement reminds me of the video in which Phillip Dyson plays it; excellent work congrats.
A comparison with Tom Brier is quite flattering, thank you! Admittedly I do not know Phillp Dyson, I will have to check out his performance! Have a great day!
@@rowanbelt3612 Tom is definitely the GOAT. and I can see where they were coming from :D
Now this the EPTIOME of Ragtime! Scott Joplin, the king of ragtime, would be proud of ya. (subbed)

Thank you friend!!
Don't slander poor Joplin! He was a monumental figure in music history and much of what we enjoy in 20s music is thanks to him!

Every time this plays on its own (like now) I look at the view count and smile.

Thanks so much, I appreciate you commenting!!
You play this so good! I knew how to play this for months but its still hard to play
Thanks!! Keep at it, you can always keep getting better!

Amazing✨I want to practice piece of music. Thank you .
Thank you for your kind words!
One of the few pianist who plays this piece like I do. Great work.
The best I've heard yet 👌
Thank you so much!
Amazing skills, thanks for sharing.
i thought that playing this piece was impossible until i saw your video man.your video inspired me so much i completed half of the song.ty
That is amazing, I'm so glad it helped you that way. Of course, you did all the work! I would love to hear you playing this piece if you are willing to share sometime. Best wishes!!
Lovely rendition mate.😄
You hit some sweet spots with the improvised parts and the unturned piano plays a bit part in the experience.
Thank you for your kind words!
Absolutely lovley arrangement, I love it! I play it aswell but nowhere near as great and with such playfullness as you do!
You are too kind. Thank you!
reminds me a little of the way tom brier played it. well done
Thank you! I need to check out that performance. It's an honor to be mentioned in the same sentence as Tom Brier, anyhow.
Post more videos. The Scott Joplin International Ragtime Foundation needs to hear about you.
Thank you so much! I did actually play for the SJIRF a while back, for their Syncopated Saturday Night online concert series. I'd love to get involved again if they were interested. Your encouragement is so appreciated.
phenomenal 😢
That thing was smoking when you finished lol.
Very nice performance! My Beckwith looks a lot like your piano though yours is in far worse shape, I hope you'll be able to get it restored at some point because I imagine it would sound wonderful!
I like the octave runs you did in this, based on Scott Joplin's 1916 Connorized piano roll I assume?
Also I didn't get this in my notifications weirdly enough.
Thank you! Unfortunately chances are it will never get restored for several reasons, but I might have the ability to do some minor repairs to get all the notes playing at least. Some of the hammers are so loose that they do not hit the right strings. I wanted to at least document the piano online in case it is destroyed or otherwise lost in the future.
Yes I did get some inspiration from the Connorized roll, and also a lot from Eubie Blake and Richard Zimmerman, as well as a few of my own inventions (although of course my own creativity derives from that of others!)
Sorry I forgot to reply to your email. I will soon.
@@rowanbelt3612 It is reallllllly far gone. Though repairs like at least regulating the action, tuning it, leveling the keys and other things that are all part of normal piano maintenance will do a real number on the quality of the music you can produce with it ;)
Also no worries about the email!
You're right. My primary goal is to get some of the hammers repinned. I can live with all sorts of problems but when you play a C and the hammer hits C# it makes everything sound awful. This sort of problem has started to become very serious in the range of notes Bb4-F#5. I think it is partially because as the hammers get loose, they start to hit the neighboring hammers which loosens them as well.
@@rowanbelt3612 Yeah, the center pins are walking out and the hammers are bobbling side to side. It's a very irritating problem, especially when the hammer moves sideways and gets stuck between strings of neighboring notes.
This sounds awesome man!
great job and thanks for sharing!
Thank you :)
Is that a player piano you're playing on? I'm just guessig because of the doors on the front of the case.
It was a player piano at one point, long before I had it. I wish it still was, as I've accumulated a collection of rolls that I can't play!
No words!❤
holy shit that was good!
Bloody lovely 🍁
This is so cool! I play the maple leaf rag all the time, but without those cool embellishments. I was wondering though how did you learn to do those? Like is it based in music theory or just fiddling around? Sorry I know I sound stupid but I was just curious
Thanks so much! You don't sound stupid at all, that's a great question. To be honest, I am not the greatest at improvisation. I easily get lost and mess up if I try and play things too far outside of the box. Pretty much, I just know the song very well so that I can make embellishments and get back on track without thinking about it too hard. You want to have a very good sense of where you are rhythmically and harmonically so you can stay solid. After that, having good hand-ear coordination is very helpful. I think experimentation is too. A lot of the ornaments I play similarly every time because one time I did something randomly and liked how it sounded. I've played this piece for about 13 years at this point! Finally, I'd recommend checking out Richard Zimmerman's performances...he was a great inspiration to me. I hope this rambling response is helpful...let me know if you have any other questions!
@@rowanbelt3612 it was! Thanks so much
Really fun!

@@comradebraixen Yeah, crazy!
This is a wonderful play by you. Keep up the good work ! 💪 I have one small question if you'd like to answer, what year and brand is your piano ? It looks rather similar to mine apart from the paper holder
Thank you so much for your kind words :) My piano says on the plate "Henricks Piano Co. Pittsburgh PA", but I find this confusing as to my knowledge Henricks was just a retailer and didn't make their own pianos. Also, I know that they went out of business in the early years of the Depression. My best guess is around 1926 or so. How about yours?
@@rowanbelt3612 interesting, mine i believe is a haines bros, Its rather old although im not sure what year (it has ivory keys so pretty old) maybe late 1800s early 1900s ?

Please tune the piano and you will sound even better. Listen to the Max Kortlander and Jelly Roll Morton recordings, too.
Thank you for those recommendations! I do intend to tune the piano in the next few months. I tend to have too much sitting on top of it. I appreciate your kind comments. Have a great day!
@@rowanbelt3612 The out of tune piano gives it charm like it is in an old saloon.
Too fast .
I'm just curious, what speed do you prefer? Slightly slower or much slower?
Much slower , I love the tempo Allison Smith plays at . I mean No offence , just my preference .
@@robertantonides No worries, I understand that everyone has their own preferences. If I play it slower, there will be people saying "too slow" lol. Most rags I do like to play slower but this is an exception. Allison Smith plays very well, thank you for drawing my attention to her video :)
No it's not. I've heard the piano roll of Scott Joplin himself playing it. He actually played it even faster.
@RenaissanceEarCandy I concur with you, I thought it was spot on
The perfect broken piano for that bordel music.
Uh.. what
@@Skgwgaietto my grandma was a professional entraneuse in a popolar bordel close to the port docks, and she told we they had a drunken pianist paying regoularly this sort on music.
@@runner0075Love it. Couldn't agree more, and the playing was drop-dead amazing! That music was forged on pianos like this one... This video brought it all to life in the most steampunk way!!! Kudos!!!
