I used the Joms against my friend's Scots, and he didn't let me have wrath except once. He activated a mounted hearthguard unit to charge my hearthguard unit, so I used Punishment to cancel it. He gave me the wrath instead. He played 'Hold at Bay' to generate three Defence Dice, and had 'Counter-Attack' lined up to play next to gain six attack dice. I played 'Holmgang' using the four wrath given to me so I picked one attack dice and three defence dice, the second part of the ability meant he had to discard the three defence dice so he could no longer play 'Counter-Attack' as he no longer had any defence dice.
Another great episode. It's always a pleasure to hear from Andy. I played Joms a couple of times Saga v.2 shortly before everything got shut down by the pandemic. I remember enjoying the play style and having success with them, even when my opponent was stingy with the Wrath. After this episode, I'll definitely have to give them another go.
A couple of our local players swear by the Jomsvikings and say they're the toughest army in their book (if not all Ages). I have played against other players using them twice, but admittedly only against people new to playing the faction. I've never had to face a veteran Jomsviking player. I also went by the "Deny the Wrath" playbook and it was successful both times against them.
I rate them a little lower down the totem pole. Not the best but they can hold up to shooting pretty darn well and are great in objective scenarios, so they're a solid tournament pick in my opinion.
Hi, great show and good technical detail from Andy. I am one of those, “deny wrath till turn 6”, however having watched this, I might try playing them. Been slightly turned by this podcast. Good stuff and look forward to next one!
Question arouse last time I played agains Jormvikings and the Holmgang ability. If I don’t have defense die during the step 2 (assembling the combat pool) and 3 (saga abilities and fatigue) and my opponent prefers to gain defense dice he states that in step 5 (defense rolls) he negates me the defense dice that I would get due to the hits suffered. So it’s like an auto-casualty hability if I can’t defend the hits… Practical example. Jormviking with 2 wrath attacks my 2 HG figure unit. I have no defense dice in the combat pool or during step 3. He uses Holmgang to gain 2 defende die (and I would discard 2 defense dice, that I don’t have during step 3.) After step 4 he does me 2 hits. On step 5 I would have 2 defense dice (“Each player takes a defense die for each hit inflicted on their unit…” Rulebook pag 27) but my opponent states that I don’t have those 2 defense dice due to the Holmgang hability used earlier. Is that possible?
Hi Bruno! Your opponent is not correct. The defence die are removed when the ability is triggered so if you don't have any defence dice, that part of the wording doesn't apply. There is an ability on the Saxon board in Invasions that does 'steal' future defense dice and it is worded very differently.
@@RodgeRules checked the Saxon board. Ferocious and Warcry negate defense die when rolling to cancel hits, like you stated. Thanks! Keep the great job. A fan of your RUclips channel!
Regarding Nordic Tempest - I thought ive read on game forums that this ability lets the opponent decide which units take the attack from this attack? Hence people saying that if you have to face the Joms, you want to take a unit of levys to soak up the Nordic Tempest ability. Am I misunderstanding or been misinformed?
Kind of telling there is no "what are they weak against" section here, unless I missed it ;) Have yet to see a board where I think "Ah, now this one JV will struggle against!"

Oh man, that's an awesome play! I'll have to remember that!
Nice!
Let's have a look at this!
It's just great! Such deep analytics... I wasn't interested in Jomsvikings before, but now I really want to play for them) Thanks!
Agreed! Thanks for watching!

Thanks Koyote! I agree, this board is just a heap of fun!

Everyone in our club jokes about yormswickings being a faction with 3 abilites)
No one just gives rage tokens to them and they lose 100% of the time)
That's too funny! There is a club here in the US where they win all the time and they think they're the best! :)

Awesome, thanks Graham! They're definitely worth a shot! :)
@@RodgeRules ok will try them tomorrow, going to go “across books” playing Saxons from aoi.
Perfect timing for my game with joms tonight :D
Oh nice! Did the video help? How'd the game go?
Appeal to the gods is so much fun when people realise what I does
I agree, it's definitely a sleeper ability, although still dependent on getting some dern wrath!

Hi Anthony! That is v1 where you just had to kill three of your own guys outright (brutal!).
What's a good ratio of hearth guards to warriors for a JV list?
I think at least two units of 4 will be useful. Andy was using two units of six!

Hehe, they're definitely a good all around force!
