Question: how long is a Chia Rig estimated (guest-timated) life span? *obviously dependent on hardware*
What difference between plotting 101 gb and k33-k34 and k35 ?
Hi, great videos, thanks for the content on Chia. Would you know if there is any sensitive data located in the plot file that we should be guarding to avoid theft or hacking? I see there are a bunch of ID numbers at the top.

I currently plot them on a 1 TB WD Black NvME. 8 cores, 8 gb of memory. I have a delay of 170 minutes set and I plot to single disks. Every 3 hours a plot gets done.
First, "I don't want to use Ubuntu Server because I like the training wheels", A few minutes later, "I actually prefer the terminal because I feel like it gives you more control"
>disable updates because you don't want to be "interrupted"
What do you think you're setting up, a Windows machine?
Just reading this but a suggestion would be to run unraid with your drives so it makes one large drive and if you wanted to, you could have a parity backup so if something happens to a drive you have a chance to replace it without losing everything on a dead drive.
I was thinking of running my hdd's in raid5. I mean Im just doing this off 4 12tb enterprise drives shoved into an old compaq 8200
I'm reading that raid of any kind is not good for chia, as available space is what you need more than redundancy. So no wasting space on parity. But, I'm not sure how that compares to the case where you lose storage.
@@goodcitizen4587 so I read on thier site they talk about raid 0. Which has no parity with striping. The only other raid I can think of with parity and striping that acts like 0 is 5. I was able to set my test rig up running a 4 500gb hdds with raid 0 for most continuous space and most speed at the same time.
Since you've been doing this longer can you comment on that, and also why raid of any kind is not good?
@@goodcitizen4587 i read the same
If I have 2 TB SSD, 32 gb RAM and amd-ryzen-7-3700x how should I set up my plotting optimally, like how many threads, how much ram, how many plots in parallel?
10:45. Punning hard!!! Love it!!!
Hi, could you please reply? How many plots will be created after plotting ssd. In my case, i have been testing with 48 TB HDD and 1.8 TB SSD. After plotting it created only 6 plots for farming where it should create 465 plots, please reply how many plots it should start farming with 6 temp plots?
I have 75tb free storage. Should make 1 plot of 75tb or divide the 75tb into smaller plots?
both my SSds are full and i cant erase the plots, are the worthless? what can I do to fix this. I have not been able to mine a full plot yet i have 2 tb nvm drives. please help!
Me: [Looks for a guide to see if I can open 3 Chia plots on my ancient hard drive in my Windows 10 daily driver PC.]
The guide:
Do you think we can use 192 gb RAM disk for temporary storage instead of ssd ? Or can we even use normal hdd for temporary storage ?…
Hi, I have a question: If I have a 2tb USB stick and boot my PC with these USB stick, can I also mine with these USB stick or do I need an external HDD/SSD
Since you've done both, do you notice and performance differences in chia mining from Ubuntu vs Windows?
I have a question.
Let's say I have four 14tb hard drives and they are completely full of plots.
What happens if I don't "win"?
Does the system stop making new plots because I ran out of space in the drives?
Great vid. Can you do a windows setup video as well?
Was going to ask why Ubuntu over Windows
Linux based chia servers plot 10% more on average.
@@EnlightenedSavage interesting. Well, I’ll be starting my setup over the next few days. Guess I’ll give Ubuntu a go then. Thanks for the info
I took the training wheels mostly off. I'm running Linux Mint Cinnamon, but I'm not running the chia GUI at all. I'm curious if once the plots are finished, do they start farming right away, or is there a command I need to run to get them to start farming?
Hi, thanks for the Video, great information! Would you pls explain the main advantage of using the setup shown in the video instead of, lets say a strong laptop where i put in a fast 2TB NVME Module for pltting, add an external Big Drive for storing the plots and then use the CHIA plotting software with a more simple UI. What is the big plus for using Ubuntu, Commands and so on... Im a beginner, getting started with everything, but cant find a proper answer to why the shown setup is the better choice. Thanks in advance!
How many XCH did you solve? Do you think the investment can be recouped within a year (like with GPU mining)?
Should we put the max number of threads available? I.E 16 threads with an 8 core processesor, so 4000mb ram and 16 threads?
I can do all that with windows right? Way easier (for me) and have as many HDDs as possible? Does it need to be on RAID or something? All my HDDs needs to be recognized as 1?
No they don't ;)
I have = ryzen threadripper 2950x 16c/32t, 128gb ram, 960gb nvme ssd, 12tb hdd. Can you please suggest me the best plots create cli command in linux? thank you.
Very timely. Just got ubuntu installed and setup trex to mine with my gpu. Planning to get chia setup this afternoon.
Are you formatting your drives in NTFS od EXT4? Do you know which is optimal?
@@stivenio I followed the guide he referenced in the video. I have heard that ext4 is more effecient with journalling turned off.
Just curious can you this on windows? If so it would seem easier to setup
Hello.. why you disabled swap memory?!
I have to ask, what did you do to get the BIOS to recognize the HDD Disks and plotting disks? I notice on the build that for you it appears yet when I tested the same approach, the only thing recognized was the Kingston SSD.
great video ! thanks for giving such informative steps and i followed and it works . But i was wondering what will happen if my ssd plot drive full ? delete the temp files ? thanks
After the flash is done Validating I keep getting an error "The disk you inserted was not readable by comp" how can i fix this?
Hi!
Does the plotting stop between every plot before start a new one, or does it just delay the 1st round? Ie. if chia1 sleep 0h, chia2 sleep 1h, after chia2 is ready, does it start immediately the next one?
Question: is there any difference in the process if you select parallel plotting with delay or just use this q option with naming the plot differently so that it starts immediately? Are the resources distributed any differently?
is it possible to have multiple machine plotting and then mark a NAS as a destination drive and with another less powerful machine to use that drive as the farming drive?
Hi, thanks for the info. I had followed all the steps till the end but plots doesn't recognize in farm after adding hdd and ssd. Could you please help on this issue?
Question - I know ppl have done this before, but has anyone rented a cloud VM for plotting? Was it worth it and what is the optimum size config to rent for best return on time?
Many thanks for the walk through, one of the most thorough.
Hi, great video! Do you need any driver for your raid card? Or do all the HDDs get recognized without any additional work?
Server uses less hardware resources due to lacking a GUI. But, some don't initially consider that your time to setup is another resource that must be considered.
Not saying it's necessarily slower to setup server for all users. It might be for someone who's not an expert sysadmin.
Hey, I had to stop the application Because during plotting I was getting some kind of errors. At this time, I had 5 fully plotted blocks which already got transferred to my final destination. So I did a restart of the pc and I opened the application then I saw that I still had my existing 5 plots in my finally destination. But then I saw there are some data's in my temp storage (NVME) drive so I thought I will format that and do a fresh plotting to get the max storage. So when i formatted the temp drive and When I my re opened the chia application i see That I lost my link to the plots. It's no more telling that I have 5 plots found but it shows the link to my plots. But It's not getting recognized in the chia software. Can anyone please guide how to fix this. See below for the issue
First and foremost, Thank you for taking the time to help us all get started with Chia.
I just built a rig, followed your setup instructions, tweaked for my purposes and have started plotting as of about 30 minutes ago.
I do have a coup[le of observations as well as questions.
In your plot.sh file, I see that you set it to -r 8 which as you had stated is 8 threads. If you are running 8 plots in parallel and your CPU is a 8 core 16 thread CPU, then shouldn't that number be -r 2?
I also realized that I set to low of a value for my -n setting in my plot.sh.
- How do I fix this? I know that I can update the file, but do I need to stop and start the process if I do or will it just take affect as soon as I save the new config file?
- What happens if there is a power flicker/failure? Do I need to delete the in progress plot files and restart?
- Where should I be asking questions along these lines so that you are not bombarded?
Thank you for sharing. I am interested to invest some serious money in Chia Plotting and Farming. Do you think that it can be more profitable than buying various cryptos?
Ryzen 9 (12 core, 24 threads), 64GB RAM, 4TB P4510, ubuntu desktop. Taking just over 2 hours for phase 1 no matter how many threads/ram I've tried. Any idea what could be slowing me down so much? Plotting in parallel but setting 2 hour delay seems like a bit much. Thanks, great vid.
Im using 2x SSD m.2 2tb each and one of them always stuck with error arround 31% ( with 5 pararels ), plus this both cards need about 12,5 hour for done 1 plot... You know maybe why the are so low? maybe I should connect them to the PCI port instead of the m.2 on the motherboard? please help :(
we are thinking buying an intel 7.6 TB P4610 you think is a good option?
Ok, so i got this running on my ubuntu but it stuck on connecting to wallet. I feel like I need to open a port or something. But I'm very new to this! How do I fix this!?
How can i stop the plot from running ?
and what i need to do after the pc as been restarted ?
Does someone know if i can move plots from a hard drive to another? Is there something else to do so I can farm with them?
I've done the same setup and I'm only getting max 200 Mb/s read write speed on the NVMe drive. Is there any settings adjustment required to get the full potential speed?
Hi I want just to ask you why you haven’t used windows?
After about two months, this (my) system is turning off sometimes, my cpu tctl/tdie goes up to 80 degrees celsius, I am not sure, what the issue is, but something is wrong. Maybe it is a power supply issue or another issue with the ssd temperatures.
I Hi, I am not to do plotting on SSD, It doesnt move beyond 1% in Windows 10. I checked all the setting & it is proper, dont know what can be the real issue? Can anyone help me out?
I need to look this video 10 times but now it works well thank you a lot❤️
do creating 4 parallel plots with 2 cores each make any difference?
Hey! Can anyone please help me with plotting? I have a ryzen 7 3800x and 32gb ram also a 2tb nvme ssd. I am plotting from the chia software around 7 in parallel with 80mins delay. But it is taking too long to plot. Like it's been 18 hours already and my 1st plot is still at 80 percent.
Hi, does it work the same with Ubuntu 18.04.5 or is the performance different?
hei buddy,
just starting today
I want to use my ssd on ubuntu to create plots to HDD and then move those HDD to windows machine or other ubuntu
is it doable?
Caleb, im using the adaptec card for my destination drives but this adaptec card keep overheating. Did you have this issue?
I linked to a little fan in the pinned comment / my Amazon store that you’ll want to attach to the fan. Use a full size fan you have around the house in the mean time maybe.
Is this setting up the hard drives as raid 0 or jbod? also is this setting the temp storage as jbod or raid 0?
I have a question i have the same Setup my plotting script is working but my ssd is now full and i didnt create one plot in the hdd what i need to do
How can i see what version of chia i am using (with ubuntu)?
Thank you.
You created very good instruction for mining CHIA - thks!
Awesomely!! Let’s see !!
What volume of internet do we need per terabyte per month?
Can I simply use the GUI instead of typing into the Ubuntu interface? (Like opening firefox, downloading chia, setting my plot speeds from the GUI... etc.?
With Ananymous profile pic you shouldn’t have a problem with that 😉
I am having issue with my final location for the plots after 100% they freeze and the plots are saved as an temperory file in the final directory loaction. How do I change this I face this issue for each and every plot
You have to cut the end of the file name, so there is only ...plot, don't run chia while doing that, after renaming restart chia and it should work 👌
Ok, I ran my first plot successfully, but I need to move it to an online rig for farming. How do I move a completed plot to a different machine?
Connect ethernet-cable
How much do I need for that same exact desktop built set up?
Hi, Caleb did a great video before this one on all the hardware and build process.
So I'm newer to linux. Ubuntu 20.04. I installed it as you did. I had to reboot and now have no idea how to get back into chia blockchain... Help? Plz and thnx
Anyone knows if I make some plots on windows but then want to move to linux, can I still use the same plots created on windows or is it impossible and I have to start fresh due to filesystem mumbojumbo?
I selected the directory that I want to add, but it is not technically added to the plotting space to check the plotting status. Can someone help me please 🙏
The editing was REALLY GOOD and I am loving your updates!
I did this build however only 1/6 of my HDD are showing up in the Disks
How did u solve ur problem dude?
Whats the advantage using linux over win? Whats the advantage to install trough cmd?
you do not need buy another license for win for that price you can buy extra 8TB drive instead
Better buy 2T HDD or 500GB SSD ??
Do you know if it will be profitable with two 4TB drives?
I know whales are getting into the game with like 300x that :(
Hi there. What about my internet band. How much Consum the farm.
Can you do this build using external hard drives
More about plotting please. Different possibilities to speed up low budget CPU’s. I bought Samsung T5 2TB drive to use as my “faster” temp file drive. Will that knock off plotting time? I am currently at around 9 hours 35 min per plot with a core i3, 16gb ram, and a dw 16TB external drive. Thanks for vids. U can’t make them fast enough for me lol.
@137 ubuntu you have cent os please explain
what model monitor are they again ?
instead of retyping the entire previous command after sudo, quickly type "sudo !!" (read as sudo bang bang), which will automatically execute the previous command but as sudo.
i did not understand , is this for linux or what?
Thanks for the vid. Is Ubuntu faster for chia than windows?
10%
@@Liam__G thank you!
how long it take to win 1 chia
2:00 I think Ubuntu worth some donation when you sell your XCHs
And can you please tell me how do I transfer the successful plots from one SSD to the different one
oh wow... thx for the how-to, i guess im out of chia farming, gpu farming already takes a good amount of my sparetime already...
Great material, thanks! How many plots do you make in 24h with this machine?
Do we know how many plots can fit per TB?
Around 4 i guess because of the temp files :$
how i can open the chia after closing it up?

Chia Plotting and Farming (STEP BY STEP Setup Ubuntu)
If you did a mistake on your bash file can you stop the process, correct your script and restart?
Yes, you can killall screen
parallel plots doesn't work faster for me,at least at Windows machine there is no difference in total speed I checked that by first doing two plots parallel then one after another and that gives me same time at the end
THat's probably because you plotted on hdd and not ssd
sorry oot, im using chia 1.0.1 version and notice there is 1.0.3 for the latest, can i just download the latest version and install it to get the latest version running?
or should i uninstall the previous version first?
@@Narxene I think the page he references has instructions for upgrading as well.
Latest version is always best
