Hey Bart - although I'm a photographer, I actually came here to look at measuring CRI for home lighting. There's a proliferation of cheap LED products on the market and it's hard to push through the lies upon which many manufacturers base their sales! (even some of the more expensive brands inflate CRI measurements...) So I was considering getting a CRI meter of some kind. I didn't know about TLCI and although your vid wasn't supposed to give techie information about what the actual difference is, thanks for doing the video otherwise I'd never have encountered it! Great info same problem when you are shooting and comparing todays LED light based tvs to Plasma tvs or CRT. massive difference in how whites looks on the camera. and also how whites looks to our eyes. i have ordered the UPRTEK MK350S premium i hope i can sort this mess out with either CRI or TLCI measurements of the tvs. as Plasma tvs are using natural glowing light i asume CRI will be close to 100.
one other question at what TLCI value can you start to see an clear whitebalance difference on the cameras compared to how the lights look irl? also have you measured CRI on any of the monitors you use?
Could it be that you're using for comparison Pixapro LED100D MKII+ ? I'm considering to buy two of them and this comparrison is not the best news for me, these lights are significantly cheaper than Aputure 120D
I'm not actually sure of the model of the light. A friend brought them in and was not happy with them, and we confirmed their poor quality during the test. I would be wary of anything that is "too good to be true"
I use the Uprtek CV600, and I was able to get it on sale. It seems to not be available anymore. Sekonik has a few, but they are all about $1000. They are not cheap!
2:08 I disagree that CRI is how your eye sees the light and TLCI is how the camera sees the light. TLCI is more accurate a metric for *both* cameras and eyes.
I sent your video to a friend and he was a bit confused by your oversimplification, and said I should have been looking at the CRI for the home lighting. And I don't think that's the better metric. CRI uses only 8 colors! (14 for CRIe), while the TCLI metric uses 24 sample colors. I don't think you did this on purpose but it mislead my friend that got the impression that CRI was specifically better tuned to how humans precieve light than TLCI. Also I think we should mention the TM-30 metric.
Thank you for your comments! I agree this information may have been oversimplified and has not held the test of time. As I have upgraded my spectrometer and lighting testing procedure over the past few years, I have been including TM-30 and SSI scores. These weren't being talked about much when I made this particular video. Maybe I need to make an updated video about the current lighting metrics! Hey Bart thank you so much.... I'm quite scare to use led light and I still don't know in wich one i should spend my money on... A really interesting comparison would be hmi lights vs led lights ... can you do that? Came TV came out with some interesting product as well like the boltzen series which on paper it seems very good but I never had the chances to test them out. Have a look if you don't know them they're cheaper then aputure ...
+mat matit LED lights are becoming much more affordable for high quality these days. As long as you find quality lights, you should be just fine. I would love to test some HMI lights, I just need to get my hands on some. They are expensive even to rent. They definitely are very powerful tho. And I do know the Boltzen lights from CAME TV. We actually had them on a set the other day and did use the meter to check them. I don't recall their exact results, but they were pretty good.

I have worked with HMI's before as well, and they are indeed incredible lighting tools. LED are great to own and use on a smaller scale. But I would definitely like to do some tests with HMI's in the future. I do know a company that makes super powerful LED fixtures. Maybe they would be interested in a test...
Wow I Found this a week after I bought that cheaper led head :( thanks for the test. Could you tell me what fresnel lens you used for the cheaper light? I got the one for Aputure and I don't think its the best fit for that light.

I am not sure actually. I would be interested in finding out. And no I haven't checked my monitors.
