- The Hawkbirds covering the Del Shannon track, "Runaway".
The song, written by Del Shannon (Charles Westover) and keyboardist Max Crook, was released in 1961 on his debut album, “Runaway with Del Shannon.” This was before the British Invasion and there was nothing else like it playing on any jukebox around... The song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the biggest-selling song of 1961. Distraught and heartbroken over the loss of a girl, the song expresses the deep emotional response felt over losing a partner.
This cover was recorded on 6/23/24 in our basement studio, on 6 separate tracks (vocals, lead guitar, bass guitar, bass drum, toms/snare, and cymbals) using a Zoom H6 audio interface, and mixed with GarageBand. Thank you for your feedback... It has been so helpful for us to better mix the sound to highlight all of the accompanying instrumentation. Let us know what you think! Good or bad, your opinions help!

This song happens to be one of my all time favorites. I literally had to catch my breath after listening to this performance. You have it mixed perfect. Sunflower's beautiful voice stands out; I can hear every word clearly. Mom your harmonizing is beautiful and your guitar solo is great! Dad your drumming is fantastic, as usual. Great job Hawkbirds! Especially the keyboard part that Mom pulled off. It isn't easy doing keyboard parts on a guitar. Nice harmonies and Sunflower is really progressing nicely handling the bass and singing at the same time, which is something even Frank Zappa couldn't do. Very, very, very, very nice!! Just loved Mom's work on the guitar. I'm thinking the Hawkbird's tee shirt gave her inspiration. Vocals were so nice - just love hearing Mom and 🌻 harmonize. I just watched one of your earlier videos yesterday and the biggest difference is Sunflowers voice. She has really grown into quite a singer. Runaway was a good choice for her voice and it gave Mom a chance to show off her skills.

@@the.hawkbirds Looking forward to the "FAST 'N LOUD from you. I wore my RAMONES tee shirt to many outdoor summer shows and thought of you. Punk was not accepted as legit when it first surface in the 70's. My first exposer to the Ramones was a live radio broadcast on New Years Eve LIVE, where they were on a flatbed trailer truck, somewhere in Manhattan. I was hooked instantly, but not everyone was. Punk Rock was scoffed at by a lot of people, but I knew they were wrong. Watching your videos and seeing the passion you put into covering all the great songs and artist from the past vindicates me. I'm also a huge Frank Zappa fan, and almost 30 years after his passing, he is finally being recognize as one the the greatest American composers of all time. Thank you for always responding to me in such a generous way.
