Solo Kayaking and Wild Camping the length of the River Thames - Part 2

- Second of a three-part film of my journey down the River Thames Trail from its source in the Cotswolds, through Oxford, Windsor, London, and eventually to the estuary at Thames Barrier (also known as Sea Reach).
Having sustained a back injury on day two I was faced with the decision to try and continue in pain, or cancel and try again another time.
I hope you enjoy watching these videos as much as I enjoyed filming and editing them.

Super work Stevie. One lesson I hard won, when wild camping - select an ok spot, stash your gear, go a good few extra minutes further on your route - just in case it's better there. It sucks to wake up, pack up, and a few minutes later you find a beautiful waterfall (happened to me) or a perfect copse, etc. I avoid camping anywhere proximate to fly tipping spots, graffiti spots, AND evidence of party spots lol. Anyway, thanks for making this. Was on my next UK trip considerations - now LOCKED IN! JD NZ

Was moored on one of those aits in Cliveden Reach once, sitting out on Hippolyta just enjoying the evening, when a bat flew up and - just for a second - hung perfectly silhouetted against the rising full moon before swooping off. My Gothest moment ever.
I think Cliveden is my favourite spot on the whole Thames
in 81 a mate and I headed to a cave in Alentejano - full moon, novel idea. I got in the cave entrance, turned to see if my mate was still coming, and saw heaps of bats flitting in and out of the cave! Yeah, nah!

I only found your videos because I've just bought a second hand Islander Jive Kayak. I was just looking to see any videos about it and what it can do. Inspired by your long distance trip. I'll just be messing about on local rivers, lakes and the sea for now but having seen your videos I'm going to try a longer trip at some point, wild camping the river sounds idilic.

Hi.great videos, great expedition. you needed some permission to sail through the locks and some permission for kayaking
Thanks very much! I am a member of British Canoeing which gives me a licence to paddle pretty much anywhere on British Rivers and canals. If you are visiting the Thames they also do temporary licences which you can by from a lock-keeper. They are happy for paddlers to go through the locks and there are also portages platforms and sometimes boat rollers too.

I’m a seasoned kayak with 40 years experience but white water not touring. The Themes looked bloody lovely by the way, great videos
Not just glass half empty, I completely catastrophise everything! 😂
I absolutely love my Islander Jive. It sits somewhere between a recreational and a touring yak. Don't know about whitewater, I don't really do any of that plus I've always got it overloaded and poorly balanced with camping gear! But check out the Islander website because they do shorter versions which are more suitable for whitewater. Islanders are tough and sturdy, mine's taken a real beating and it's as tough as nails.
I love that they are British made too.

This looks amazing, I've always wanted to go kayaking but never had the chance.
Quick question, when u visit a village/town/city. What do you do with the Kayak? Tie it up? Do you trust locals that much?
I know I said a bit harsh but living in a city, u fear leaving thing unattended for too long 😅 lol
Superb part 1 buddy, total enjoyment. The atmospheric visuals were enhanced by the music fitting the land and waterscape to perfection. Loved every moment. Sadly, Part 2 became unwatchable because of the unbearably awful and completely inappropriate. shallow dopeymusic, unfortunately used as its soundtrack. Watching with the sound turned off to avoid that annoyance deprived me of your interestingly informative commentary which often contains valuable nuggets of wisdom which you impart to us less knowledgeable folk without in any way being preachy or didactic, just being your natural and likeable self. I'm sure I would have enjoyed it at least as much as I enjoyed part 1 if you had used the same music again. Other than that, your cine-graphic and editing skills produce a visual feast which is hugely enjoyable, and I have to admit that you have 99% convinced me that a one grumpy old git and his fairly large dog, plus our camping kit, sized inflatable, would not be money wasted.
Many thanks and I look forward to working my way thru' all your other videos, best wishes and do put in some work on your axe technique, I fear for your fingers, It's frightening to see how you split firewood down to kindling! It needs a "some viewers may find parts of this video disturbing" and children not allowed to watch warning! Believe me, even a slight impairment to either hand buggers up the way you do everything.
