  • Up Pot Guide for Seed Starts and Transplants
    Up-potting, or potting up, refers to moving a plant from a smaller to a larger pot. This is usually done to give the plant more room for its roots to grow and spread out, which can help improve its overall health and vigor.
    The relevance of up-potting in gardening can be viewed in several ways. Root Development, Nutrient Availability, Water Management, Stability, Plant Health, Introducing More Room and Nutrients, and Extending Your Garden Season for More Yield.
    This comprehensive guide aims to offer a gardener's insight into up-potting. By delving into the nuances of this gardening technique, the guide emphasizes its significance in maintaining and enhancing plant health. It thoroughly explains what up-potting entails and why it's beneficial and offers practical tips on how to do it effectively. Whether you're an experienced gardener or a novice green thumb, this guide will equip you with valuable knowledge to ensure your plants thrive through successful up-potting.
    Understanding Up-Potting: The What and Why
    Gardeners often up-pot their plants in the spring or early summer, when most plants are entering a period of vigorous growth. When to up-pot can vary depending on the specific type of plant and its growth cycle.
    Up-potting is a vital part of maintaining and improving plant health for several reasons:
    Space for Root Growth: As a plant grows, its root system expands. A larger pot allows these roots to spread, preventing overcrowding and encouraging healthier growth.
    Nutrient Availability: Up-potting usually involves replacing the old soil with fresh, nutrient-rich soil. This gives the plant access to essential nutrients that support its growth and development.
    Improved Water Management: Larger pots hold more soil and more water. This can help maintain consistent soil moisture levels, preventing overwatering and underwatering.
    Prevents Root-Bound Plants: Their health suffers when plants become root-bound (their roots form a dense network that impedes their ability to absorb nutrients and water). Up-potting prevents this by providing ample space for roots to grow freely.
    Disease Prevention: Overcrowded plants are more susceptible to diseases and pests. Giving each plant enough space through up-potting can reduce these risks and promote healthier plants.
    Promotes Vigorous Growth: With more space, fresh nutrients, and optimal water management, plants can grow more vigorously, producing more foliage, flowers, or fruits.
    Remember, while up-potting offers numerous benefits, it's vital to do it correctly and at the right time to avoid causing stress or damage to the plants.

    Can you just plant your seeds in the final size pot you want it in?

    • @BootstrapFarmer
      @BootstrapFarmer  10 месяцев назад +4

      Some of the reasons you might not are larger pots take up a lot of space meaning you’re starting less seeds in the same amount of room. So for instance, the largest pots, 5 inches only eight fit in a 1020 tray. Versus if you start them in cell trays in the same 1020 size you could easily start upwards of 200 starts. Then you gradually up them as the roots grow while adding fresh soil, which equals more nutrients into the root zone. As plants grow in smaller pots, they deplete the nutrients in the soil and that’s why you see plants have a massive growth as those new hungry roots, devour new nutrients as they grow into the bigger pot.

    Thanks for the video I have the 1020 trays but didn't know what cells to get. I'm a new gardener with small garden so the 4 cell inserts will be great for me. Happy Gardening!

    I'm more of a fan of just planting 3-4 seeds in a 3.33" pot and having the less productive plants "loss their heads". I start really early and don't have the time and energy for all this repotting. I just drop them under the lights set some drip lines to the trays on a timer and come back in a month.

    Hello Bootrap Farmers, and thanks for the video.
    Are the 6 cells trays compatible with 1010 trays? Like can I put 6x 6cells into a 1010, just like I can put 12 of these inside a 1020? Thanks

    Great video! I've ordered from you guys before and been very pleased with the high quality of your products. I've got all my seedlings started and have up potted them once (I'm hoping that they can make it in this last size till planting). I plan on selling these plants to friends and I don't want to give away my expensive pots. Do you have a suggestion for what I can transfer these into so that they're ready to sell? When you charge $4/per start, it's really hard to make any money off these guys. You factor in the time, electricity (for grow lights), heat mats, seed starting mix, coco coir, and pots--- it all adds up quickly making me wonder if this can be profitable on a small scale. I'd appreciate any tips you may have! Thanks.

      This is a good time to bring up that, as growers and farmers, we tend to be a frugal bunch. This realization must lead to growers not putting their own hang-ups on pricing and cost on our clients. If you can grow a tomato plant out big enough to up-pot and sell to a buyer, especially at a farmer's market or roadside stand, that adds $1.92 (the price of our 5" pot & inserts if bought in a 40 pack-the most expensive option we have). You are giving them better transport, better displayed, better-growing plants for your buyers who have likely gone out of their way to support locals.
      Evaluating your market and their needs plays a crucial role in knowing. What transplants to make ready for them and what size pots might be for their needs and the crop's benefit. Making your marketing material and sales pitch locally grown to much higher standards and giving them the best pot options elevates their experience.
      You can also think of the pots as not the regular ol' throwaway pots but an investment in packaging. Many of our farmers have a buyback program to get the pots back and keep them out of landfills.
      Hope this helps.

    It's nice to see a company came out with robust seed starting pots and trays. I only wish you sold smaller quantities of some of your items. I think more people would buy them.

    • @BootstrapFarmer
      @BootstrapFarmer  8 месяцев назад +2

      If we sold smaller quantities, you would see that our minimum quantity would be lower than a single piece or lower than what we have. We must account for what a package costs to send, warehousing, and labor to process a single piece.

    • @kansasgardener5844
      @kansasgardener5844 6 месяцев назад

      @cosmicallyderived I just found other similar products, but thanks for the input. They could sell smaller quantities if they wanted. Take their 6 cell trays, for example. The smallest quantity they sell is 60. 60? What home gardener needs 60 of them? They could sell 15 or 30. They charge for shipping, so why does Quantity matter? I just wanted to try some of the new air prune items, but I found what I was looking for elsewhere, so it's all good.

    What sanitization “bath” would you recommend cleaning from one year to the next.

    • @BootstrapFarmer
      @BootstrapFarmer  8 месяцев назад +2

      Personally, I like STAR SAN
      A high-foaming, acid-based, no-rinse sanitizer that helps penetrate cracks and crevices.
      Odorless, flavorless, and biodegradable.
      Reduces water spotting and can be used without rinsing when used at the recommended dilution.

    I just received my order of 3 1/2" and 4 cell pots plus some more 1020 trays and some 1010 trays. I love Bootstrap and have been using them for several years now. The 5" pots were a game changer for me with tomatoes when they came out. Before that all I could get were the flimsy 4.5 x 6 from elsewhere.

I bought some 2 years ago and even with the lights a mere 2-3" above the soil, my seedlings still end up leggy. Nothing on the packaging indicated kelvin or lumens levels, just "grow lights." Being new at seed starting, I naively assumed they would be OK.
