  • Want to know how the Sickest mountain bike in the On One line up rides? This edit was shot solo, on local trails, well within the safe limits of the bike but hopefully you'll still get a good idea what this radical steel hardtail can take in it's stride.

    Loving the reviews. Not sure how you manage to keep talking when climbing steep trails 😄 The "Hello Dave" looks like a great hardtail. I ride a Whyte 905 V2 which I love. I built an On One Bootzipper after watching your review and pleased to say it's been a great bike so far. Stay safe👍👍

      @Concrete Head the majority of the better spec steel bikes are 2k plus And tbh i fancied something different. At the worse I can strip it , and buy another frame and have decent components. For the record they ride fantastic ,super stable downhill, and climb spot on ...

    Great review, Guy. You demonstrated its capabilities well. As a fan of steel HT’s, it does appear to be a fun bike to rag around local woods - looks like it would take some effort to wind up but worth it when you get it going.

    Great bike . I've changed tyres . Seat and . Bars tho . . Save the tyres for an up lift day . Put some conti on rolls great now . SDG saddle and burgtec bars . Well built bike

      Hi Simon, have you tested on any longer "xc" rides? Would love to get one for my local flowy/jumpy trails. What i am afraid of is the way up, about 3km uphill back to start and also want to use it on some longer xc rides with mates and family. Is not too much of a bike for such rides?

    Great review of this bike, I've just started looking at getting a newer hardtail and getting back into biking.
    Would you still recommend these bikes or are there better bikes about these days, slightly concerned that it might be a bit too long and slack for my normal local riding around Woburn.

      TBH that's what I thought it would feel like but I loved it. There's always the Big Dog if you fancy a similar feel with more conventional geometry. They've got some good deals on ATMO too if you sign up for the newsletter

      @@GuyKesTV Thanks for taking the time to reply Guy, the other bike I'm looking at is the Ragley Big Al or Big Wig which I'm pretty sure will be more conservative geo like the Big Dog.

      @@TheAndyMaan I can't remember the numbers exactly but I looked at Ragley and geo when I was prepping the Chameleon review and I'm pretty sure they actually had a decent spread from quite rad to more trad across the range. They're certainly worth a look.

      @@GuyKesTV the indecision mate alot of people are saying ride the scout and enjoy it as they are very good and then make a decision,I'm new to mountain biking as well which doesn't help I suppose

      Greg Newman Scout is definitely more versatile. It’s not as tank like as Dave but it still shreds really well and it’s a lot easier to pedal, especially on climbs!

    Lovely place to ride I won't say where it's my local, 15kg is nothing if that bothered about weight go for a big poo before a ride. Gone are the days I can spend 5k on a bike so one of these bad lads I reckon.

      @@alanhaigh9682 yeah, it's not even frozen underneath either. Riding out to and then round Stainburn on Sunday in the slop absolutely killed me so I'm in no rush to repeat that. Be rude not to get out for some sort of play though. Stay safe and see you on the trails 👍

      @@GuyKesTV typical uk country blasts. And long coastal pedals. Love the coastal routes. But also have to ride with the 7yr old son when he goes out. So fair mix

      Michael Batey I reckon you need a 29er for the longer rides but not something as heavy duty as the Hello Dave. Big Dog, Big Al, Specialized Fuse and Whyte 629 are all good options.

    Are these frames still made by marino bikes in peru? Heard the first batch was made by them for sick bikes. Guy would love to see you review the ribble ht 725

      These are Taiwanese. Merino did make some of the Sick bikes though and you can get similar frames from them. Ribble 725 hopefully on the way soon.

    Hi Guy, how do the tubeset characteristics you describe compare with the recent steel Ragley's? Think they are also triple butted 4130. Asking because I've ridden the recent Blue Pig extensively but will probably move to a 29er HT next. Weighing it up between the Hello Dave and the Big Wig. Thanks

      Yep, Ragley was where the slack and long stuff started in the UK, thanks to Brant (who designed all the early On One stuff too).

    Great review, what’s the difference in feel with a steel and aluminium. I like enduro leaning bikes, been riding GT sanction and quite happy taking it up hill. So very interested in this as an alternative.

      steel gives you less vibrations. Where alu can feel rock solid, there is a bit of give in a steel frame. It's not floppy or anything, but it is more compliant than alu. Carbon is a whole different story. it can feel as soft as steel and as hard as alu depending on the lay-up of the frame.
      I have all sorts and steel is my favorite. Not the lightest, but the most fun imo.

    There's one of these frames on a selling site that's been staring me in the face for weeks now. I just don't have a 160mm fork for it and only a 140. Hmmm.

      I think they got 50 original bikes in the first batch, they went so well they ordered a second batch (including this one) with a modified rear end and AFAIK they're planning to keep tweaking and re ordering as long as they're selling well.

      @@paulbarton957 yep it's such a ridiculously capable bike it can take a lot in it's very long and slack stride without risking a blue light situation. It's gagging for some proper bike park or Alpine action though.

    So the question is , do you buy this or a cheap suspension bike like the calibre bbb etc etc. Your getting a quality bike here with decent kit and a lovely fork , good brakes ,do you really need that rear damper is the question....

      Hardtails always require more skill to ride as fast as full suspension, but they need less maintenance over time and that extra input can make them super rewarding.

    @guykesteven hi guy been a big fan of yours for 20years now and need some advice. I am trying to get back into mtb after being diagnosed with a herniated disc in my neck. In the past I have been a die hard hardtailer. Due to my restricted movement and pain when riding I am looking for a full suspension bike to help with a smoother ride meaning more time in the saddle. I am 5ft9ins but only have a 27inch inner leg. I am learning towards an orbea occam. I need a more upright seated position due to the pain when tilting my neck backwards would you suggest a small frame with all this in mind. Cheers.

      Kumag Ka it’s a Go Pro 7 on the chin of a full face helmet to make it more stable. I normally just use it on a chest plate mount for full suspension as the lower angle gives you a more dynamic view with arms and bar. It can shake around a bit too much on a hardtail though.

    I have a dilemma here. Slimmed down HD or beefed up Big Dog? For flowy trails with some jumps and rocks. Also want to use it for some longer xc rides. Any thoughts?

      Jan Maly for roller coaster flow I’d go Big Dog. Dave does better than I expected on the flatter stuff but is mostly more about the crazy DH.

So you reckon the Big Dog can handle some mid size jumps and a small drops? Any tips for some other aggressive hardtail frames for decent price? Btw i found out about your chanel only last night.     Old saying ..If Aluminium was any good they would have made Steel from it....l say I'm All Carbon and no Fibre...I would like to see a dual suspension Ebike steel frame. I bet they could make it as light as Aluminium but as you have already worked out rider weight is only factor that is important on Ebikes. That bike is a chopper with its head angle and wheelbase.

      Yes but Hotlines can't ship bikes at the moment so it's on hold until Parcelforce start playing ball again.

    Less value now! I don't know if it's off the back of this video or Planet X cashing in on the current cycling boom but frame only price has shot up to £ 600!

    Looking to add a hardtail to my stable and this is standing out especially without spending the earth. At 5'9 it recommends a large just about, what you think?
    Also where are those trails they look right up my street!

      @@GuyKesTV I'm all body and no legs so usually I find a large fits better if in doubt. Currently on Trek Remedy 9 Medium Large size which is perfect for me.

      @@snoopdutt1985 Sounds like the same proportions as me and an M/L Trek fits me perfectly too so I'd go large. The trails are in Nidd Gorge just between Harrogate and Knaresborough. Sloppy AF at the moment though.

      Hi! I was a bit afraid too after reading the reviews, but could not resist to buy a tempest gravel bike last summer. So far I am satisfied with my purchase. Also I had a problem with a Carnac helmet and they sent a new one free of charge. You need some patience when using the live chat, but overall I am satisfied with the service.

      I can't really say I'm afraid as I haven't ridden the Ribble yet. It's more expensive though and the geometry is more like the On One Big Dog but with 150mm of travel.

      I'm guessing the Big Dog is a bit more of an all rounder? A bit happier pedalling than the Hello Dave?
      The HD maybe isn't the right bike, but its just so mental it might just work!

      David M tbh mate Onone have just made it a bit easier. Big Dog has been switched to RS Judy forks which are nowhere near as good as 35s. The price has dropped but Hello Dave is the better package by far, and well, you know you want to 😜
