Never thought about it possibly being a manual? Newer cars dont let you turn the engine off if you're not in park. And older ones usually dont let you take the key out

My car has been parked the whole winter without the hand brake to avoid having the brake pads of my rear drum brakes sticking to the drum. So I park it in first gear only. I'm using my hand brake only when not at home like on public parking spots and such.
I can see how people might do things differently when they're just getting out of the car briefly, then returning. I occasionally have to think about the process then vs the automatic behavior of normal parking.

There should be a safety feature for those who forget to put their vehicle in park while the engine is running and they decide to step out. To complicate matters, some car makers have complicated the drive modes from being a selector to some kind of electronic button. People are getting easily confused now.

Try practicing counter steering, it's amazingly effective in situations like this. In this case he should have (apart from paying attention to what he was doing of course) _pushed_ the handlebar on the right hand side. Push right, go right. Push left, go left. Sounds illogical, but it works. Could save your life sometime.
I see cyclists disobeying basic traffic safety all the time. Running lights, stop signs, going on sidewalks and riding on the wrong side of the road. Total morons.

I had a moment like that myself once. I was reverse parking and I was trusting my parking sensors too much. I knew I was close to the car parked in the spot behind me but I didn't know how close exactly. The sensors didn't light up so I kept crawling backwards until I hit the car behind me. The sensors didn't light up at any point. Luckily, I was going at a snail's pace so there was no damage to either car, and the owner of the other car was nearby so we settled it quickly. We basically decided to pretend nothing happened because there was no damage. I certainly don't trust the sensors anymore.

@@honcore1443 The back mirror shows you what's behind, but if you don't have experience using it for parking, you won't know where the car's rear end is, especially if it's a sedan like mine so the rear end isn't where the window is. Again, yes, I should have learned to park using mirrors sooner than I did, but if you don't already know the dimensions of your car, you can't just use this method the first time you need it. It takes practice.
