  • After a promising rookie season from second-year star Tim Duncan, Spurs fans had to wait three-and-a-half months for the season to begin due to a lockout by NBA owners. When the season started, the Spurs posted a 6-8 record in February. However, in March and April, they won 31 of their final 36 games on their way to a league-best 37-13 season record.
With a sweep on the Blazers in West Finals, the Spurs advanced to the NBA Finals for the first time and won their first NBA title.

The Twolves won Game 2 in WC 1st Round and the Knicks won 1 game not 2 games in 99 Finals. With Ewing the Knicks play the Spurs better. Let me add, if Ewing had an ankle. That shit by 99 ECF was almost detached from heel.

Gotta challenge here as all the pieces of the previous era of the spurs talent isn't around, obviously... looking forward to new heights or obstacles facing this current team ... if it takes 2-5 years or longer than that for the rebuild in gettin' back to relevancy again .. SO be it ... never will there be another Tim Duncan

We have been blessed as a mid-small market team/franchise. 🙂 5 NBA Titles. Great front office, scouting team and coaches over the years. But, it wasn't always smooth sailing. Too young/new of a franchise back in the '70s. Lost in playoffs to older/established teams/franchises . Founded in '67 (Dallas Chapparals) relocated to San Antonio in '73, moving over from the ABA during the mid '70s. Absorbed into the NBA after the ABA folded after '77. Along with the Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers and NJ/NY Nets. The Nets (1) and Pacers (3) won ABA titles during the late '60s - mid '70s. Spurs never made the ABA Finals. Nuggets made it once (lost to the Nets)
We grew up in south/central Texas during the '80s when I was a kid. SA had some great teams, but couldn't get past the Lakers, Rockets, Nuggets many of those years. Then the mid-late '80s we went through some dark years. Losing seasons, no playoffs. relocation rumors to Charlotte or Orlando (They ended up getting expansion teams in the late '80s Hornets and Magic) . Lottery years landed us Sean Elliot and David Robinson. Those 2 stayed loyal with the Spurs for years ( late '80s and the '90s) despite not winning NBA titles.. Robinson could have gone to Philly or NY Knicks (bigger markets that were interested in him), but stayed in SA, signed long term contract, never whined about getting traded to another team or anything like that either. Elliot did get traded to Pistons 1 year, but came right back later. Great teams in the '90s again, but we weren't ready yet to become elite. It was always the Jazz and Suns beaten the Spurs in the playoffs. Rockets ('95 hurt! that was finally our year, Hakeem owned Robinson though) and Trailblazers, too. But, especially the Jazz and Suns. They owned the Spurs during the '90s. Barkley/Johnson and Phoenix Suns ('92 and '93) eliminated Spurs in the playoffs twice that decade and Stockton/Malone the Utah Jazz ('94, '96 and '98) killed the Spurs 3 times in the playoffs during the '90s. We then were hit with injuries in '97 (bad losing season, no playoff), we fired Bob Hill (many of us werent happy with that at the time) hit lottery with Tim Duncan.. Spurs rebounded in '98, Jazz kicked out behinds again in the playoffs, Duncan rookie season. Malone continued to own Robinson in the paint. But, Duncan matured and became a franchise player! Our bench got deeper in '99. I think the NBA lockout was a blessing. The Spurs stayed close and tight during the lockout, still worked out and practiced together. While other teams around the league slacked off, partied during the lockout. Coach Pop is very organized as well. The Jazz were organized as well, but getting older. I think they layoff hurt them. Spurs slow start in '99 (some fans wanted Pop fired lol) but Spurs caught on fire after the lockout and went on a run. The Jazz started season hot, but faded a little at the end. Last week of the season, Spurs took the 1 seed in the West away from Utah.
Utah had just came from back to back NBA Finals with the Chic Bulls ('97 and '98, close to beating the Bulls both years) , Michael Jordan had retired, the Bulls broke up many of the players to other teams. Bulls had bad year and went on rebuild for years after '98 into the '00s. So Utah were favored to get back to the NBA finals in '99 and win it all this time. Along with Reggie Miller/Jackson / Indiana Pacers (in the east), they were the the rivals during the '90s, nearly beat the Bulls in the '98 ECF. Pacers (they went to 2000 NBA Finals vs Lakers) were favored to get to the NBA Finals and win as well. NY Knicks upsets Indiana in the '99 ECF, game 7. Spurs beats NY Knicks in the '99 NBA Finals, our first NBA title ever. and the rest is history (4 more to come with Duncan , Manu, Parker later on). Elliot won 1 in 1999. Robinson in 1999 and 2003. We got lucky with success and coach Pop and loyal players.
Also, '99 we lucked out when Portland upset Utah in the playoffs. Utah Jazz had our number back then and would have been Utah vs SA in the '99 WCF. lol Instead of Portland vs SA .
Now we are in a long rebuild (4 yrs so far) 😞 Losing seasons and no playoffs since 2019. Coach Pop may retire soon. But it's been a fun ride since over the decades!
Utah and Phoenix are similar to SA, lots of winning seasons, playoffs, great teams over the years, few losing seasons. But just minus the NBA titles so far. They are due some day soon.
Anyhow, sorry for the long rant, just thinking about the teams . lol Great video. We missed those Spurs teams .
