Most people have no idea how far an AA anything can go, but put it this way: if I fire a 50. caliber round at a drone, it could fly for miles before touching down, and when it does, it will likely still be moving fast enough to blow a man in half. Most AA systems are either missles (that explode into clouds of armor piercing shrapnel) or guns and cannons FAR larger than a 50. and can throw thousands (or tens of thousands) of rounds into the air in seconds. Imagine say, a dozen or so depleted uranium or tungsten shells the size of a WW2 rifle gernade landing in a residential area or even peppering a highway? If you're LUCKY, only a few people will be turned into paste. So yeah, that's why they don't do that.
In 60 years time there'll probably be some guy on his deathbed like "Yeah, that was me, I got a few friends together and we just flew some drones around to see what would happen."
The drones are most likely the XP-4 VTOL drone made by PteroDynamics, and they're probably going through real-world testing. The military hasn't said anything, because that's what they always do.
