The Origin of Audi Quattro (and wow is it nose heavy!)

- Audi put all-wheel drive on the map. In 1980 they developed an AWD rally car, and stood on so many podiums they got altitude sickness. In Europe, the homolgated version of the car was the Ur Quattro. It had a 300HP 5-cylinder.
We didn't get that car here. We got a tamer version of the tamer version: the Audi Ur (original) Quattro. For the rest of the world, this car had about 200HP. Ours had 160. But remember, this was the 80s. A '82 Mustang V8 made 157HP, so the Audi wasn't the slow.
What it was was rare, advanced, and powered by a turbo I-5. And it's rather special.

Random guy: Your car sounds good!
Audi quattro: *singing in 5 cylinders*
Cebastien Larochelle yes
One of my all time favorite cars ever. My best friend in high school had one back in the early 2000’s. There’s nothing like a red Audi with 5 cylinders and a dog leg gear box. It doesn’t get much cooler than that. We used to cruz around Santa Cruz ( No pun intended) and the Bay Area in that thing. People would give us looks all the time in that ride. His dads company was Euro Spec, they made the best after market Audi parts ever. O the good old days.
Not a dog leg, but what fine sounding automobile!
Damn! That is the cleanest 1985 Quattro I've seen 👍👍👍
Looks to be 1985 showroom fresh!
jman0701 my dads was an 83, it was stock
5:50 "You write a letter and say 'I would like boost'. You send the letter, and three days later, you get boost"
Klassic Klapman Kwip! Nice work, Zack!
Rare as rocking horse shit now, especially in that condition
Never heard that before. Awesome
I spent hours at the local Porsche/Audi dealership when they unveiled this car.
What a great memory to have.
Beautiful sound, Volvo 850 , Focus RS / ST , Some VW Golf also had nice 5 cylinder engines.
The "Combat Arms" theme music was epic!!
Glad I'm not alone here lol
WAN PISU
Doesnt like V10s? Carrera Gt? Lexus LFA? E60 M5?
He must be thinking of the Viper. The only V10 I can think of that doesn't sound good. Don't forget the Huracan, R8, and Gallardo 👍
@@LUNCHMONEY4numbers What's wrong with the Viper?.. It's rumbly, but that's not really a bad thing.
@@caesarguzman5831 lmao why are you so angry
@@caesarguzman5831 Salty goes in food, not on your forehead....
nothing sounds better than a 5 cylinder
Kenny was a cool guy.
Awesome little Audi!
Not little at all, an A1 is little.
@@chrisogrady28 No modern cars are little, well, Fiat 500 is little, but yeah..
He was?
Didn`t really hear him say much apart from "yeah" lol..
And the new guy is like, saying like like, you know it`s like, like, a sentence with like, the word like, like in it, like..
Man the owner seems like an absolute quality individual. Soft spoken and a gentleman
My aunt had one of these when I was a kid back in the 80's and I thought it was the coolest thing on the planet!! Awesome cars!!👌🏽
The flared arches do something to me 😍
It's called sexual arousal, my friend!
Still my favourite car, could never afford one though. Never seen one in that colour before here in the UK, yours is a nice clean example, well done for keeping this piece of our rally heritage alive.
Those mismatched type of wipers driving me crazy. Anyway nice car, I always love the sound of the 5 cylinder engines, especially the quattros.
One of my all time favorite cars
My father had a 91 Audi Turbo 5000, the switch is for the diffs and it got us outta snow enough... it had 560k on the odometer they sure as HELL don't make them as solid as then, My old B7 APR stage 2, S4 V8, at 90K popped the first engine and understeer was horrific... I still loved it though!!
Was this car designed by the same guy that designed the VW Scirocco?
My college roommate had a Audi with a European spec inline 5. I forget the model. It belonged to his grandfather. For a big heavy sedan, that thing could haul ass.
Worked on one of these back in the late 80’s for a doctor who daily drove it. He would go through turbo’s every 30K because he didn’t have the time to let the turbo cool. 84’s didn’t have water cooled turbo’s. Absolutely drooled over that car! Best I could do on a tech’s salary was a coupe GT. 5cyl engines rule!
How terrible is the maintenance/reliability of these things? Compared to the Gold Standard of car reliability (80’s/90’s Made-in-Japan Toyota Corolla w/ manual transmission).
@@stoneylonesome4062 the Quattro drive train is rock solid and clutches were long lived. I did remember doing the clutch hydraulics. Compared to a Toyota they definitely don’t have the same reliability but compared to other German cars of period I would say the same. Bear in mind any car of this age is going to have failures beyond the typical pattern failures we encountered when they were 10 years old.
Finally some audi quattro love! Beautiful ur-q! Wait til you drive one with 400+hp! time for 20vt!😀Lol on the diff lock selector, both center and rear diff are open when the switch is in the vertical position. 1 locks the center diff, 2 locks both center and rear.
My first car was a 1985 audio 4000 s non quattro. Mint condition got it for free with a bad motor. Car was great not even close to this car but it was my 1st and last German car.
Welcome to the 5 pot warble Zack! My dad had an 84 5000 S with almost that same engine. Later I had a Volvo V70R, modded with exhaust and DP. Lovely!
I really like what Zack has brought to one takes 👍
The description is wrong, it wasn't the UrQuattro in Europe but the Sport Quattro with 315 BHP.
5-cylinders should be a minimum.
Still any longitudinal V6 V8 V10 W12 is ahead and they know it's wrong, the Conti GT3 has the engine well behind since it's not awd, so that's treason, they sell "wrong" packed as technik. They moved the torque converter behind the axle, helps but not much.
They had the innovation to make the secondary shaft of the gearbox a hollow tube, through which the front driveshaft comes from the center diff to the front. Was a lighter option to have 4wd which kept the existing gearbox case, with the front diff inside
Yeah, we all read how nose heavy they are ... then watch Group B rally cars, no problem.
Back in my younger days, (here in New Zealand), standing in a special stage, freezing my nuts off, in a pine forest - middle of no where ... that sound echoing through the pine tree's, still gives me goose bumps.
I drooled over this Ur-quattro on bring a trailer for a while. Audi gets a lot of hate for reliability, but my B5 S4 has been rock solid. Got me a little scared though when he said he has had 4 of em...Matt wasn't confidence inspiring either when he reviewed one.
dont be afraid of revving it too high, you can rev the balls out of these.
the old 10V is cool, but please try to get your hands on a 20V, maybe even with some modifications. With boost added they are really nuts.
Gotta get a urs4 or s6 from 94 to 96, or the first 20v turbo we got was the audi 200
I got like 6 200 20v's he can drive
He doesn’t like the sound of a v10🤯🤦♂️
Frank Latin, yeah, but he likes the 5, what a mug.
*
Yeah, he's the worst !
Burn him at the stake!!!
I fell off my chair when he said that. And it just got worse. Unsubscribed.
The coolest Audi ever built🔥
One of the coolest cars of all time. Sounds spectacular too.
I can remember when Audi brought the Quattro’s to SCCA and dominated everyone and everything. This was the Audi 5000.
Can't believe Matt passed on this!
I used to have an 06 Schick Quattro. Looked real sharp.
Love the sound tho, 5 cylinder always reminds me of baby v10 lol
And there's a reason. The firing order makes it sound like a baby v10.
Those Audi's are so awesome. Don't know the prices of them but I can imagine it's high
The reluctance to turn because of the front weight bias is known as the polar moment of inertia.
Zack looks like Jeff Cavaliere
Audis of that era have offset steering columns and pedals, which may be partially responsible for some drivers pressing the wrong pedal and causing the unintended acceleration issues.
Technically it began when Audi manufactured the Iltis for VW.
Zack Klapman sounds like the name of an aluminum siding salesman.
Bush makes me sound like a merkin salesman... 8-/
Zack, 100% it feels like my 1991 Audi 90 feels like my steering wheel is off centered. I always thought it was just me!😂
The mismatched wipers. Once you see it cannot unsee it.
This is rad. Nice owner & car. Now let's review lotus elan m100. Noone on RUclips has a good review yet.
That's because it's the worst lotus in history.
Didn't really get a good impression of what it's like to drive. A great thing but does it drive well ?
yo that Final Fantasy 8 OST gave me flash backs to 1998.
That is a cool car. I had a 1987 quattro 5000cs. 2.2 turbo stick all black. I loved that car!! I sold it when the ignition coil went bad and I could not afford to spend 500$ to get a new one. No ebay or amazon back then.
Would be really awesome if somebody brought a Ford RS 200 next.
Quattro began with the development of the military purpose VW Type 183 Iltis by Audi.
Just look at the timeless lines and beauty of that Quattro! Two thumbs UP. :)
God I wanted one so bad back when these first came out, just couldn’t afford it...now I couldn’t afford to maintain one!
It's not expensive to maintain it's mostly VW
You should try and find a 1987 or 88 Mazda 323 GTX. It's also a limited built car AWD so they could race.
The steering wheel is off center, by design. It allows the driver to get in/out of the car easier. And the US received 10 Sport Quattros originally. 6 red cars, 2 white and 2 green.
HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT GEAR HE'S IN
If I was driving through that beautiful (if bone dry) canyon scenery I'd forget what gear I was in too. Especially if I was driving a sweet car like that. Personally I prefer analog gauges to digital... more accurate and reliable.
I read the title in Matt’s voice lol!
God damn that's so clean. I want it so bad.
cool plan z story. great video as always.
There's a guy on IG with loads of old rally cars from LA, should get him on the show, can't remember his name though
Thank you for mentioning the 2Bennett Audimotive height and shock valving rate adjustable Coilover suspension. Always nice to hear people making positive comments about our products. We have almost any upgrade for this car you can think of. Also check out our restorations with upgrades at www.2bennett.com/body_audi_restorations.html the homepage is 2bennett.com. Enjoy your Audis everybody. Ken Bennett
You call it 'dog leg', we have always called it a 'racing 'box' (race gearbox) --- inline-5, no other engine sounds as good as it, the rhythm of a racing heart-beat -- a musician's engine
One question : if I click the video hoping it's Matt, does is count as watched even though I stop the second I see Zack's name and do they still get payed?
This dude sucks
@@caesarguzman5831 why?
@@caesarguzman5831 I was just asking because I would put myself through misery and watch this annoying asshole a little bit longer, so they get payed, cos I like Matt and what he's doing and I want him to continue. What's wrong with that?
I still watch, don't get me wrong , if I like the car, but he doesn't know much about cars, and is always spewing misinformation, he's no Matt Farah that's for sure...
14:00 there are 3 diffs open normally
In 1 you lock the center one
In 2 you lock the rear diff too, which will make it more understeery until you drift the rear but that takes Ari Vatanen skills
1:27
that royalty free music tho
The entire engine is ahead of the front suspension! Go audi lol
That is the DKW DNA cursing real Audis until today ... what a s****y concept. But the 5 cyl was great.
@@Tonigr awesome engine that happens to be between the headlights, but it goes to show you how much of an advantage 4wd was because the car decimated all.
I had a b5 S4, that was all mounted ahead of the front suspension, I've got a vr6 now, the whole thing is slung out the front... Good thing they can make an engine with character
The steering is offset. In the Audi GT, CQ and 5000. In fact it almost killed Audi due to the unintended acceleration crap back in the 80's.. 60 minutes....It was thought the alignment of the steering was confusing drivers as to what was the gas pedal and brake pedal.
Good for this dude. Hes got a gold mine car
awesome vid man!!!
Active self protection. Some of you will understand.
Big thumbs up for rain-x 👍👍👍 that stuff should be legally required.
Just curious what Bmw has a cable shifter that makes them feel sloppy lol... E30, E36,E46, E90 is linkages
I do get why one may think BMWs are cable and not solid linkage, but he has an M3 god damn it 😂
Love that Audi quattro
That's a lot of mass dangling out in front of the shock towers.
Nope.
The Ur quattro is the car you are reviewing. That IS the world beating rally car from the early 80's
In Euro spec it ran 200BHP (more in rally trim).
The 300BHP (also more in rally trim) version you speak of is the sport quattro. That came along in the mid 80's and won virtually nothing - it was all over by then and the crown had passed to the space framed Peugeot 205 T16. The sport quattro (an Ur quattro with about a foot chopped out of the middle - literally) never stood much of a chance against the purpose built space frame 205 T16, or the similarly built Lancia Delta S4.
It reminds me of like a Cadillac mix with an 85 Honda Accord
I think Zack looks like Rick Kelly , Australian racing car driver
How could anyone drive this car for more than 5 minutes, and not notice someone had only put a new wiper on the driver side?
The rain came because Quattro!! What better environment to drive a quattro than in the rain?
Nice. Can it be retuned to Euro spec ? That would be the first thing to do surely
E55 AMG video incoming
Really cool car!
Coolest car youve done
yo this has the same music as the Active Self Protection channel lol.
Not the same car.... But are you, Scotto, watching?
Classic plates
You taught him more about his car than his dad could have bought him.
Saw this car very nice car and a cool dude. Good day
I had an 86 1 of the best cars I ever owned I never had a problem just normal matinence
1-2-4-5-3!
Man, that’s a cream puff. I’m assuming that’s original paint? Fadeout Audi logo on the sides looks nice.
Nice ride man
Is that call of duty music?
I can see you don't cover your ASP...
Zac, you simply didn't know how to drive a quattro. Walter Rohrl, Stig Blomqvist, Michelle Mouton, Hand Stuck etc. drove quattro and won many Championships.
Where are the Group B XDrives and 4MAtics?
I've had 2 2wd Coupe GT... they're horrible in snow.. because the engine is so far forward..
It's a pretty classy looking car.
Euro UR QUATTRO has 220HP from 86 and up. The german voice in the Euro spec cars say the following things : bitte tanken, Sicherheitsgurt anlegen, Tür ist offen.
Best episode of the year!
Man i love those!
