So this was after the Space Colony ARK incident. But Rouge was also known for doing very questionable things that no doubt made Sonic uncomfortable and besides being flirtatious with other guys, I believe she did have flings with other guys like Knuckles and Raziel if I call. Having all these wrong girlfriends only made Sonic very unhappy. But he brought all of that unhappiness on himself because of his ego.
When will we get how Sonic and Amy became a thing.

All he got out of those failed short lived relationships were unhappiness, disappointments and grief. And Sally humiliated Sonic when she Slapped and dumped him in front of a large audience.
