- Justin Trudeau and the Liberals appear to be in big trouble. Following a stunning loss in the Toronto-St. Paul’s by-election to the Conservatives - a riding they’ve held handily for the last 30 years - the federal government is at risk of losing big in the next federal election, currently set for October 2025. As the Liberals grapple with where to go from here, Prime Minister Trudeau also faces questions about whether he’s still the best leader for the party.
John Ibbitson is a reporter and columnist in The Globe’s Ottawa bureau and has been covering federal politics for decades. He joins the show to discuss the Liberal’s potential summer strategy, how it compares to the Conservative’s approach and any signs of Trudeau’s resignation.

This loss will make Trudeau re-consider nothing. In his mind there is always a reason that everyone else is making the wrong choice. The media is against him (laughable). People aren't in decision mode. Why don't they get me? All we have ever done is made life more affordable for Canadians...seriously? How come I never knew about the by-election? I never got a notice in the mail, knock on the door, never saw any ads or leads to direct me there etc. I'm a Toronto resident and wanted to vote conservative to make a bold statement to the liberals. Seems like they are stifling Torontonians from access to this by-election? I knew it was coming up, but couldn't find access or info on it, also never received anything like other Canadians do in other places... Odd.

Chinese spies infiltrated and stole information and samples from Canada's top-tier infectious diseases lab in Winnipeg. For years, the Liberal Party refused to release the documents exposing this cover-up until they were forced to release it.
A party that's incapable of managing our hard-earned tax dollars, and has broken their electoral promise of being the most transparent government, should no longer be governing our country.

I do not excuse the Liberals, but I blame the Conservatives.

And you say homes can't be afforded.
Ask why the 15-17 year old kid the new 20% had to have from 2012 to 2017 bought the market you want in to.

I think people are seriously concerned about immigration and cost of living and vote bank politics. A good leader works hard to get votes but this guy works hard to divide people for votes.

There's just nothing good to look forward to with Trudeau, the carbon tax won't be reducing, he's still as delusional about there being a viable alternative to oil and natural gas that people can switch to when there's really not. Ontario has hydro and nuclear but are still increasing natural gas power plants, because apparently it's necessary. Electric cars would reduce ground level pollution but they still rely on whatever power plants are available.

Is it not reasonable to assume Canadians don't like being homeless, houseless, and hungry! More and more middleclass are joining the ranks of Nomads living mobile in cars, van's and RV's. Contrary to the supposed plan to save the environment from carbon emmisions the carbon tax has contributing to Canadians moving into a home on wheels. Aging Canadians, beyond or nearing retirement have little value to add to the economy. The very idea that this government includes CPP/CPPD in the GDP and are unaccountable for spending, many of us who are dependent on these funds to support our daily living expenses are hungry and houseless. Living in an RV in RV or campgrounds is more costly than maintaining a home. Best ask Walmart to build bigger parking lots!

What a weighted interview. PM brought the party to power by riding coat tails. Having a history of a singular secular affinity to an outside force and the results of same causing immense turmoil including division , financial hardship , affordability all have failed immensely. Look back to 1982 and the state of the economy and who the PM was then, let us not forget the irony of using an emergencies act as it was used for the FLQ crisis.
