Spill-proof tape drives are great! You did a fantastic job on this Yamaha dbx tape deck, sir. I commend you on your patience and I agree that non-use is the worst thing to do with anything mechanical. I would inform him that if he doesn't use it he has nothing to complain about and it would be better for the Yamaha if he sold it to someone more responsible.
ReelToReel was chatting on Facebook about this exactly. A couple of units were bouncing back after repair and then sitting for two years on a shelf. He now recommendeds/demands that his clients run the decks for at least a half hour every week (IIRC). Mechanical stuff wants to move. If you don't use it the mechanism really starts binding up
Love you're explanation about this DAT recorder. I'm glad that now i own beside an Instruction Manual and Service Manual and . . . also an original SONY Operating Manual (copy) of the mechanism of this DAT recorder.
I have similar issues with laserdisc players. They rely on a smooth operating mechanism that does not take kindly to lack of use. Now that apart from belts there are no new spares available if you don't use them for a few years chances are that they will not work, yet customers often expect free repairs despite ignoring your advice. All part of our experiences dealing with difficult customers.
My electronic teachers as well as the electronic supply store i worked at (long time ago) always told me that rubber renew (if you happen to have the MG Chemical bottle, same as mine) is only but a temporary short to mid term usage fix. I haven't tried it on anything but belts. I wonder how efficient on long terms it works good on tires and idler wheels, pinch roller. Thank you for this great video !!
It's all temporary. If it gets regularly used it lasts longer. The only solution is replacement but that has become very difficult finding correct sized tires. Some are available but hard to find and can cost more than the repair.
Warranty... Yeah, sure. 🤦♂️ On a 40 year old deck developping a different problem than the initial service due to a different part that seized up due to old age and lack of use. That's like saying "I want warranty on my car because it won't start after I haven't driven it for 4 months after you changed the tires 2 years ago "
@@12voltvids We have 3 months warranty on our repair ( not on the entire machine) Whether you use it or not, i’ve heard it many times, ‘ I put it in the cupboard for a year, never used it’ yeah right, not my problem 😂

Even when new the instructions manual for every device I have seen recommends that the unit be turned on and operated for a minute or 2 in every mode. Play, ff, Rew. It's especially true for stuff that's 40+ years old. I know it's really hard concept for people to understand. People think of the stuff that's manufactured today being only designed to last maybe 5 years. They live in the past thinking that all this old stuff was designed to last forever but it wasn't the design life of a television 30 years ago was 5 years. The design life of a VCR was 3 years. Yes that's what they were designed to last if you used it everyday to record 2 hours and play 2 hours every day a VCR was designed to last you about 3 years before it needed to have service major service I'm talking head replacement and so forth. Playing back movies if the machine was never used to record might get you a little longer than the thousand hours that the heads were basically designed for. After all 500 2-hour movies doesn't seem like that much but video heads tended to wear quicker if you were recording and playing on the same machine that's where you saw the problem start to show they could play back tapes recorded on other equipment fine well beyond that thousand hours and if you were just recording on them another machine could play the tape back just fine well after that thousand or so hours and that wasn't it a hard set thousand hours some went 2000 hours others went 1500 but some were completely worn after 1,000 hours depending on the type of tape that was used the higher grade tapes tended to wear the heads down faster than the standard takes because the oxide layer is finer which caused more friction. But as video heads war once they got past a critical point they started showing problems streaks in the picture for example when playing back self-recorded tapes they would still play back old recordings that were made before the heads were past that critical point and they can still play back pre-recorded but someone who used their machine every day to record hours of soap operas and play them back at night generally found that after a couple years they had to change the heads and I did hundreds of them and most machines were in that three to four year range. stuff was not designed to last longer 40 years ago it's just that people's mindset today seems to think that all the quality stuff was made 40 years ago and it will last them the rest of their life and that's not true. The reason why we are seeing all these 40 and 50 year old machines that are still serviceable it's because they haven't been used for the past 35 years they've been sitting in a box sitting in an attic in a basement they got put away and forgotten about and then someone dragged it out and decided to get it working and because they don't have that many hours on them they still got some life left but the same rules apply you got to use them if they sit around they're going to get gummed up and seized up and that's even more true now because they've been sitting so long to begin with you free something up you got to keep it moving or it's going to just seise up again
I have to monitor the food bowl because big Joe will just but in and eat whatever is there abd the others won't get any. So Joe has to get locked up while the others eat.
Man this guy has some nerve I wouldn’t work on his crap again probably only paid 20 bucks in the first place. These people are lucky to have a good tech which is hard to find.
I see some corrosion or some mess under the tape head there. 2.5 years ago i would not warranty anything now as you work hard & do good work. If it happened to me i be more than happy to pay you again.
I'll take a pass on any and all AG garbage. Changing hundreds of leaking smd caps. You couldn't pay me enough. I have a few sitting around here that were given to me. Years later they are still sitting in the corner. No thanks.
Love your videos on tape 👌 Worst part is i live in Sweden so it's hard to find all the chemicals you use or even know how to translate them. But that "rubbery massage oil" seems like every tape heads must have? 🤔
I feel your pain when you have to deal with clients who are clueless as to the properties of mechanical/electrical systems. For forty years I serviced the fuel systems at Ontario airports. Most calls were from operator abuse. Luckily for me the actual customer was the oil companies who always paid the bill especially when they read my comments as to the root cause of the fault. In the worst cases they would forward the bill to the site operator. My callbacks were for things like" after you fixed the fuel computer the AC blew hot air". Not connected. Just bad timing. "The truck is not pumping fuel." Drive 160kms on an Easter weekend to find the truck was empty. The customer is not always right. How is your customer going to react to this tape deck diagnosis? Probably still your fault.
It's not an E-clip. It's not a C-clip. It's a Jesus clip and there is also such a thing as tin whiskers. Just two things I've learned around here. hahahaha
It's got a bunch of Elna caps in it those are the next things to fail watch that will be your fault too! Better off just dumping a customer like this they can take their self entitled attitude elsewhere.
Hope he doesn't come back saying the dbx LED isn't working!

6.30AM here and can not sleep anymore. nothing better then watching you repair a deck.
Man, you’re famous all over the world for your repairs. I mean, who else on RUclips could be as skilled as you? Nobody

Decks that stop when the take-up reel stops turning is a great thing. Prevents eaten tapes. I wish all cassette players had that.
