Rickenbacker 4001 / 4003, it is a classic beauty like a vintage American car. There are even "modern" manufacturers or luthiers using Rick's shape with some modifications but you can easily tell where they get the inspiration
The Rickenbacker 4003 is one of my favorites in terms of both sound and looks. I love all the standard Rick colors: Fireglo, Mapleglo, Jetglo, and Midnight Blue. And since there are several different styles of treble bezels out there to replace the pickup cover and lots of awesome Rick pickguards available, you have lots of options for easy cosmetic upgrades.
One of my all time favorites is the Peavey T-40. Both aesthetically and tonally. And one I've been drooling over for a while is the Aria Sb1000 in red with the natural strip down the middle.
Yeah, I don't know. I have a book on bass guitar and even Les says that "man, that's one fugly bass" when he saw his first Thompson bass in the music store window...
While the bongo looks weird, it honestly is one of the best basses I’ve ever played and I don’t think it deserves the hate. I just bought a bongo six and the thing absolutely rips and turns heads.
Same here, dude. I own a schecter stiletto bass myself and it is a phenomenal sounding bass. And it’s a real beauty too. It’s a definite keeper for me.
You forgot to include the Gibson Thunderbird Bass. Even till this day, it has to be the most futuristic and awesomely cool looking bass on the planet. The design was way ahead of its time and thus will be timeless!
I cannot comprehend for the life of me why the non-reverse tbird is not the main model. The regular reverse Thunderbirds look and feel so bad but sound great. Turn it around and it's an almost perfect bass that is hard to find.
I hate basses that are painted, or shaped like guitars. Basses should all be in natural. Exceptions being black music man's, red Fender basses and Rickenbackers
Andrew Mystic yeah i tend to not like paint very much on my basses, i like stained finishes but thats where it stops. Stained, wood grain, and sunburst all the way.
I agree with many of them! Especially, despite its omnipresence, the Jazz Bass is just such an iconic and visually perfectly balanced design, it's crazy how it's still the benchmark for most of us, including me, after all these decades! I also agree on Pelham Blue, and I'm so happy to have at least something similar and imho equally nice: a J-style Bass (not a Fender but a modern take by Clover) in Lake Placid Blue! Some basses that I'd add to the list: - Le Fay Herr Schwarz, of course in matte black with a Padouk neck and fretboard, this looks so rad! - Warwick Thumb, it's just so iconic - So many of Serek's basses, in my opinion, they are vintage vibe brought to the presence in perfection - Duesenberg, especially the Triton bass, as a different but equally perfect take of blending past and presence - Alpher, especially the Mako Prime V2 - have you seen the golden one with 3 single-coils and no knobs? This is really a rabbit hole, I guess we could still find dozens or even hundreds of beautiful designs...
I never understood people’s hate on the bongo. It’s really one of the best production instruments I’ve ever played and I have never regretted getting mine. It’s absolutely my go to when I need to play in a professional setting and will be until something better comes out. Dingwall might actually be that something but they’re still a pretty penny.
I must say if You and I ever just find a storage full of bass guitars and decide to take them all, we would not argue how to split the stash in any single case. Actually I would also left Bongo behind...
you should've added the Cort A5 Plus SCMS, such a beautiful guitar, looks so classy but so metal at the same time, the color, finish, wood, just everything about it is just *perfection*. i bought that bass guitar and let me tell you. it was worth every single penny. no only for the looks but also for how it feels and plays. its incredibly heavy too....
The Chapman Dave sig basses are lovely, but you could spend an extra £60-£80 and have a German made Warwick Corvette or Thumb. White high gloss Thumb basses look so good, especially with black hardware. Quite surprised no one has mentioned MTD basses yet. Absolutely beautiful.
Love your videos! Your content helped inspire me to love bass more. I had just joined my favorite band but switched to bass. Learned material from 6 albums by 3 different bassists, the challenge was fun but being a guitar player I wasn't 100% stoked. I had amazing guitar gear built up over years and only a couple nice pieces of bass gear, (93 USA p bass I got for $350 is the jam /aims producer tube head). Anywho your videos inspired me to dive into and love crafting great bass tones and gear the way I did for guitar. So thanks and keep em coming.
Excellent choices, especially the PRS, which I did not know before. Jazz all the way! And for me personally: anything dark blue with the texture of the wood visible. And Jaguars. In orange ;-)
This is fantastic! I love watching these, as someone who designs instruments, I find these videos super helpful! Also, how could you forget the Rickenbacker 4003? :D
My absolute favorite is the Warwick Stryker. Explorer body shape with neck through construction and finest woods, even more beautiful than Alembic's Exploiter, I think. Unfortunately discontinued, extremely rare and unaffordable if you ever get to see one. I'm pretty sure you don't like it, Patrick (lmao).
Hey Patrick! I actually own a 1985 Peavey Dyna-Bass, and I wanna get your thoughts on it? I think it looks kinda like a P Bass, and it sounds exactly like a Fender Jazz Bass!
soooo Jazz Basses are beautiful like really beautiful ; P-Basses too (especially from 1951 to 1957) ; and every "classic design" basses (Höfner Violin basses, Gibson EB-2, EB-0 etc)

The Fender Starcaster is one of my white-whale basses that I would like to own one day, but sadly these are very rare these days and expensive. Also would love to have the Gretsch White Falcon but will probably never be able to afford it. Michael Shuman of Queens of the Stone Age played a White Falcon Bass at the Grammy Awards and in the studio for their latest album Villains, and damn did he look cool playing that Gretsch
Alpher basses and Overloud basses. Also, in my country there is an special luthier called Egilegor, his basses are somewhat "special", check out the headless Adabakar model.

All right y'all, should Beautiful Basses be a new series?! What do y'all think?!
Yes
I was only wondering when you'd make this series a thing!
also yes
yes pleass my dude, also i think if you get a bongo you need to get a darker finish so it looks less toilet seat-y
It involves BASS.... like.
Some of these could DEFINITELY be on the ugly bass series 😂
these gibsons...
Namely the Ripper/Grabber.
I'm happy i'm not the only one who think that his taste for basses is strange...
Not really a fan of the Gibson’s and Rippers

Give me some Jaguar bass love bro
Always wanted a Jag PJ bass with block inlays. Definitely always on the lookout for one as a fender player.
The original jaguars with the active electronics and the jazz pickups would be nearly Holy grail
One of my all time favorites is the Peavey T-40. Both aesthetically and tonally. And one I've been drooling over for a while is the Aria Sb1000 in red with the natural strip down the middle.
What do you think of Carl Thompson basses? Les Claypool plays them and i think they look great.
His walnut bass is so sexy! I also like the rainbow bass, but it's ugly. In a good way though.
Andrew Mystic yeah, those headstocks are fantastic!
IMO. Probably the best looking basses I've ever seen
Claypools are great, but some of Carl's other custom builds are much better looking and fancier.

Claypool's Walnut Carl Thompson. End of story.

I used to have an early '80's Hondo II that I had repainted in Pelham Blue.
