Besides being a magnificent musician, Ian Anderson is a wonderful humanitarian as well. Love his voice too. It is so unique. Jethro Tull is one of those bands whose music is timeless. He is quite the English gentleman. Great interview.
Always loved Tull, Ian Anderson is extremely intelligent, & has a wicked sense of humor! I'm so proud that I have the same birthday!! Never too old to rock -n- roll, or too young to die!!!!
I think it was cool the way he put her in her place because she cut him off telling his story and he says “I don’t think these people have heard it” meaning the audience, of course.
it was the Aqualung concert at red rocks amphitheatre and I was there so unless they had 2 riot concerts, anyway they banned hard rock at red rocks for about 10 years after that. we definitely got tear gassed big time. it was the following summer after the benefit album tour which i was also at. wow, some really good blotter acid at that one :)
"Living in the Past" really is hard to play. I've screwed it up more than once myself - sometimes in front of an audience. I just continued playing, pretending it was all part of the show. They still threw bottles at me. :(
This was... There was a time that they weren't too old to r'n'r. At that time, a lot of musicians had extreme performances on the stage. It was all part of the show. So yes, classy... ;-)
Sorry to say, but Ian is mistaken about the Red Rocks "riot" concert. It was the Aqualung tour they premiered in 1971. The following year was the Thick tour where they played indoors in Denver and Ian took the stage wearing a gas mask. No lie!
I watched this live when it aired. The show's producers were booking more "edgy" guests trying to broaden its audience. What a train wreck. It's obvious Regis had never heard of Jethro Tull, and the old ladies audience loved the "your sperm's in the gutter" line.
Regis may have been clueless here, but how many things could you stay on top of daily. Regis is at least a generation older in his taste of popular music.
+Willie Finn You must be Irish, Willie! I also have Irish ancestry, though you wouldn't know it by my married name! (nor, for that matter, by my maiden name, which is Gibson.) The funny thing about my married name is that my husband took the name of his step-father, who raised him. Krebs is a German name. His original and birth name was Williams. Are you related, by any chance, to Neil Finn the singer, who is featured on the fairly recent and very beloved film by Peter Jackson, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey", singing "Song of the Lonely Mountain"? Just kidding! I know the chances of you being related are slim, just had to bring it up!!! Are you a Jethro Tull fan, or just a Regis and Kathy Lee fan? I liked the Regis and Kathy Lee talk show pretty good, but I am a HUGE Jethro Tull fan! Ian Anderson is my flute rock idol! I play the flute, and because of the amazing style that he created for rock with his flute, I just had to learn to play. So far, I can't duplicate his style, but I will keep trying until I get there one day!
I don't think Ian had his full attention on his music in this appearance. On Living in the Past, he missed a note. I've never, ever heard him miss a note in any studio or live recording before this.
This was originally broadcast on April 15, 1994; I videotaped it, too. What a classic moment, when that idiot Kathie Lee tries to act like she knows SO much about the band that she has to say "I love that story..." and Ian says, "...oh, shall I tell it to you again?" I laughed til I stopped!
they aren't pathetic..they just didn't know anything about the band. It's not their fault that Tull was booked on the show.....i'm surprised that Ian agreed to do their show...
Obviously Regis and Kathy Lee were about as aquainted with the legendary music of Tull (Anderson) as a dolphin is to a bicycle. That was just a bad booking. The bigger question is why did the band agree to appear? Didn't Tull's manager know who these bafoons were? What's next, Jimmy Page on Wheel of Fortune?
+FridayNightLullaby "Bouree (with a little apostrophe over the FIRST "e"- I didn't know how to type that to get the apostrophe where it should go! - The song was written by Johann Sebastian Bach and has been played by many artists over the years! It is one of my favorites by Tull because I love the amount of flute solo that's in it. I believe it is a French word, but I don't know what it means! Now I'm gonna have to look it up! :-)
Yeah, sorry! I was just doing some research on Jethro Tull, looking up documentaries, interviews, etc., and this clip came up. Ian is just cool about the whole thing - doesn't correct Regis or say anything negative about the hosts' complete lack of knowledge about their group (you would think they - Regis & Kathy - would have done their homework before they interviewed him!) I have always loved Jethro Tull, but aside from his off-the-charts talent in multiple areas, he is a genuinely nice guy! Thanks for your comment! Hey, do you happen to know what Bouree means? I haven't looked it up yet! :-)
Tull were never popular in a commercial sense like the stones, they were always eletist so you can't really expect the average compare or host to know much about them. I saw tull in London around this time on their 25th anniversary tour and you could clearly hear that Anderson was in vocal decline probably due to over use.
As you seem so eager to jump to the defense of a pair of completely talentless T.V. stars, there appear to be plenty more insulting comments on here towards them you can waste your time on. I removed my original comment as it is obvious to anyone watching the clip. P.S. : "Good on you" is a common British saying, and I promise my estimation of my own intelligence isn't reflected in a harmless, meaningless comment on a RUclips clip. Cheers!
Ian Anderson, always has been a class act as well as a talent.
I love the way Ian shut down those chatter boxes and began to play.
So many good tunes produced by Jethro Tull. Ian is always the gentleman, very well spoken and a great guest on interview shows.
Besides being a magnificent musician, Ian Anderson is a wonderful humanitarian as well. Love his voice too. It is so unique. Jethro Tull is one of those bands whose music is timeless. He is quite the English gentleman. Great interview.
Ian Anderson.... a class act musician... love you!!!!!! 🥰😘🥰
No, these guys were NEVER bad. Thank you for posting this!
Always loved Tull, Ian Anderson is extremely intelligent, & has a wicked sense of humor! I'm so proud that I have the same birthday!! Never too old to rock -n- roll, or too young to die!!!!
Smart man talking to two twits!........................always a class act,Ian's cool!
a genius talking to two morons
Lol.. so true !!
Yes, the bands back then were cerebral and intelligent. They had substance.
YES ,They have musical guests on and REALLY DON'T KNOW who they are ! It is Outrageous !! 🤔🤣🤣
Thick as a Brick and Passion Play tours were epic. War Child and Songs from the Wood tours were magical.
What a great interview. Ian is so cleaver - very witty.
Harold Terranova I think you mean clever, not cleaver, unless you mean he's sharp
Actually he's a bit pretentious.
LOVE him anyway .
what a gem saw the rock opera the other night.....tull forever!!!!!
Ian music still ROCKs .
Super talented Ian Anderson & Barrimore Barlow was a beast on the drums. Very unique sound. Love Jethro Tull.
living in the past is so beautiful. even though they hate doing it. its so unique and great.
Love Ian's voice, u know it when you hear it.
Wonderful Ian Anderson.
Ian must've hated doing this but it's still a cool little demonstration of Tull. Thanks for posting it.
I remember seeing this when it first aired - what a long and extremely strange trip it's been since - love this post
Hah! it's hilarious. Ian is talking rings round them and it's going right over their heads. What fun!
JT, great band
Thanks to Jethro Tull, you can bring a flute to a rock or blues jam, and people get it (often)!
Awesome that Martin played bass on TAAB in this. Never seen that before. Best band on Earth.
fantastic!
i loved this episode---
Splendid.
love tull
I think it was cool the way he put her in her place because she cut him off telling his story and he says “I don’t think these people have heard it” meaning the audience, of course.
Ian knows how to flow with any interview.
Such a nice guy Mr.Anderson he is. He employed 125 average folks at a salmon farm..seriously .
Jethro Tull will forever be a favorite of mine...Regis and K, not so much....
it was the Aqualung concert at red rocks amphitheatre and I was there so unless they had 2 riot concerts, anyway they banned hard rock at red rocks for about 10 years after that. we definitely got tear gassed big time. it was the following summer after the benefit album tour which i was also at. wow, some really good blotter acid at that one :)

spacecowboy5000
I applause your candidness :-)
I hope by now you must have got it right.
👍
Ian is a great artist and a perfect gentleman.
I can hear Regis listening to "Mac The Knife" in his head while Ian is speaking.
handstrong5 lol
This was... There was a time that they weren't too old to r'n'r. At that time, a lot of musicians had extreme performances on the stage. It was all part of the show. So yes, classy... ;-)
a gentleman

Very good video, Why do people post (and seem to enjoy it) such hateful comments about the host?
At least they had them on their show. There are too many jerks out there. They like to say mean things.
Unfortunately, poor Ian had to suffer fools gladly in this clip.
Some of the names they used were "Navy Blue", "Ian Henderson's Bag o' Nails" and "Candy Coloured Rain"
+james tipping Well thank the Good Lord above that they went with Jethro Tull!!! Whew! Dodged THAT bullet, eh?!
+Beverly Krebs Yes indeed. lol
Puddle of Spooge...

when Ian Anderson does it, its classy.lol
Regis may have been clueless here, but how many things could you stay on top of daily. Regis is at least a generation older in his taste of popular music.
Agreed
This is what happens when genius meets commoners or two clowns.
good fun. even the sporran tale was funny.

+Beverly Krebs not related to neil finn. am irish. i agree with you...tull were great and ian is the man.
Hehe; that was a nice moment of slipping one by the censors!
They should have done a duet with Kathy Lee.
I don't think Ian had his full attention on his music in this appearance. On Living in the Past, he missed a note. I've never, ever heard him miss a note in any studio or live recording before this.
My head hurts after reading this comment.

Martin playing bass?

albert russo Dude, when you're interviewing someone you don't know you do the fucking research
Regis : "BORY"
Jethro Tull "elevator music" played live....wtf
Philbin probably thought that Jethro Tull would be a hillbilly banjo picker.
Lol, Ian always hated the "Jethro" part of their name
what's the name of the very first small part of song
It's called "Bourėe".
Bouree in E minor by J.S. Bach....
thx guys!!!
Einstein on Sesame Street...
Tull where a brilliant band - so special, so why do they get idiots who havent done their research to interview these guys?
Regis Philbin is absolutely clueless...guess that's what makes him such a beloved figure.
heh heh...
Awwwwkwarrrddd
Kathy needs to...oh lord, I can't go on.
Kathie Lee's blood pressure altered at lyric;"Sperm's in the gutter, Love's in the sink"
Ian should have farted in the microphone ...just to see the reaction of of these hapless host ...
Regis and Kathy Lee - the original Dumb and Dumber.
I think you found the word...Thick.
What's with the snippets of songs, can they not play one song? Regis and Cathie Lee making lame jokes, argh!
BOOR-ee????
+FridayNightLullaby "Bouree (with a little apostrophe over the FIRST "e"- I didn't know how to type that to get the apostrophe where it should go! - The song was written by Johann Sebastian Bach and has been played by many artists over the years! +Beverly Krebs I know the word, it's regis' pronunciation I was making fun of (I think...its been so long) :-)
Yeah, sorry! I was just doing some research on Jethro Tull, looking up documentaries, interviews, etc., and this clip came up. Boree? Regis is TAAB.
Tull were never popular in a commercial sense like the stones, they were always eletist so you can't really expect the average compare or host to know much about them. I saw tull in London around this time on their 25th anniversary tour and you could clearly hear that Anderson was in vocal decline probably due to over use.
"So there's nobody called Jethro Tull?" This sums up just how stupid they are...
sperm part was good
This entire interview makes me cringe...jesus
Real bad harmonizing by Barre.
how dorky can two hosts be.

Regis was just plain lost with no chance of catching up … simply an old fart …
he said "sperm's" teehee
