Using TERMITE COLONIES to Grow Edible MUSHROOMS (Experiment)

  • I'm attempting to use termite colonies to grow termite fungus. The process of how the termites construct their fungus combs has been very intriguing and something that hasn't yet been filmed in 4K UHD before. This is Part 4 of our Termite Series featuring Macrotermes gilvus termite colonies that actively farm Termitomyces fungus on combs within their nests. Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution. #Termites

These termites are also food for people in Zimbabwe. They collect them in as many as bucketfuls and roast them for consumption. I have eaten those mushrooms in one wet season in the mountains. Looks like I saw the termite mound as we were foraging and unfortunately there was a tiny snake taking shelter from the rain in there 😬

It;s better to not manipulate the humidity yourself. The termites know what the fungus needs far better than we ever could, and as you can see, they only build the pillars of life in sealed chambers where only they themselves can cut open holes or seal off openings to control the humidity. Messing with humidity yourself and taking control away from the termites would probably only spell doom for the fungus.

As a random thing to add. Springtails are often found in the wild, including around/in termite nests. It could be an idea once you have the ability too, to see if a colony of Macrotermes gilvus and springtails could co-habit. It could help reduce the outbreaks of mold on the fungal combs, as springtails often eat decaying forms of mold.

If they choose to make the founding test tubes the royal chamber, we're screwed because the queens would eventually blow up in size and not fit at all in the test tubes! I have some time to think!

Because honestly I'm curious what happened to carpenters ants that were still in test tubes (since last time we saw them) especially Antless Queen no5
    [week 22]
I mean series like this would be great for newcomers that want to catch up and have quick learn about your ants/animals (and overall your channel) without being "forced" to watch many ~20 minutes videos.
Would also help you with making content because you would get 1 week every 1-2 months without creating new original video which could be nice brake for you without extended editing and scripting.

This is an excellent series and your narration and videography is the best!! But I would also like to add some constructive criticism, I understand that giving a recap of the series is important for new viewers but sadly almost 30-40% of you video goes about you catching up on the story and for those who have been following the story all along it's repetition and the video has less of what we want to see and more of what we have already seen. I understand recap is important but at least try to make it short or maybe add time stamps so we can skip the recap. Once again a big fan of your work and as you say .... ANT LOVE FOREVER!!!

mushroom and insect farms are humanitys best shot at surviving the next centuries. no surprise that nature figured that practice out millenia ago. very interesting experiment!

Just an extra note - once the mushroom has already "opened up" like that, it has already been releasing the spores, and it doesn't really matter to it if the mushroom is picked off or eaten.
