- We suppose there are many ways to create a "low maintenance garden"-but the one we prefer is a highly diverse garden with close plantings, which pretty much eliminates weeding any unwanted plants. We'll take you through the first garden we put in here at Flock-the Shade Garden, which began 3 years ago and has flushed out to be a really full-of-life garden for the shade. In this video we highlight ~ 40 of the 160 different types of plants in this garden-showing that you can plant quite a range of greenery in shady spots.

Your authenticity shines in every video and I so appreciate all the knowledge and enthusiasm you have to share. I’m in Illinois and you have taught and inspired me so much to create and expand native plant beds
I love the bonnet. Thanks for the videos. Really can use todays info.
Thank you Saunder and Summer for the very enjoyable tour. Beautiful selection of plants. The owner before you made a great decision on the major 'anchor plants', lucky you. When I had my gardens I too used the reds and burgundies to 'light up' the shade garden. The cimicifuga, hillside black beauty is also fragrant...wonderful surprise when strolling the gardens. In a year or two you WILL BE weeding out some of these aggressive perennials, may apple and sweet woodruff being ones that I loved BUT called my 'go crazy plant'. :0) People need to see what you can do in shade WITHOUT using hostas. Your energy and design choices remind me of the days of gardening/designing my 'living canvas' of plants. You are indeed an artist on your property. Thank you for sharing with me. Much appreciated.
Oh thank you!! My backyard is shady and extremely difficult
wonderful shade garden.....Thank You
This was fascinating!
Dodecatheon have been reassigned to the genus Primula! Hard to keep track.
Thank you!
Absolutely beautiful!! You sure know your plant names. My gardener just tried to plant that native columbine here, I can’t deal with the ketchup/mustard colored flower heads. Keep up the great work and great content!
So much diversity in such a very small space too. Encouraging if we're working on a smaller scale. More is more.
I love, absolutely love your garden walks...I get so many inspirations for my garden. I really appreciate the plant names you put on screen.
What a beautiful shade garden. I'm watching from Australia, not sure if we have access to 3/4 of the beautiful plants shown. How much moisture do these plants survive on? Back home it gets quite dry around the trees you've just shown.
I am in the same region about 30 minutes from Skaneateles.. it's great to get input on what really grows well in Central New York.. I am not exactly agriculturally inclined!!😂😂😂😂
Love the content and wanted to mention, the camera work is lovely. The two of you work very nicely together 🫶
The alpine strawberries may not be as large, but they are definitely as prolific, if not more. They're just so small it's often not worth the effort to pick the berries.
Thought the video would show plants that grow in shade.Theybare all in direct sun 😐
Picea abies 'Prostrata' Prostrate......? not Norway maple?
Hi Summer, where do you buy all these plants? i know my local nurseries do not carry half of these plants. Also can you share a list of these plants especially the deer resistant ones. TY
I love the diversity! beautiful shade garden.
I love the hat!!!!
Aww it’s filled in so well!! Loving how lush it is
Lol, I’m in the heat dome 😂
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌿🌳💚
The Leucojum are a favorite in my shade garden. In 15 years, deer, chipmunks, voles, and rabbits have not touched them. Morning sun. Clumps double quickly. Eventually, green foliage droops and hangs around a few months. I plant aralia Sun King nearby; its vibrant green distracts the eye. Zone 7b (8a officially) North Atlanta, GA. Heavily forested neighborhood that I LOVE 🌸🐝
Just incredible.
Thank you Ms. Summer and Sander. 💐💚🙃
Awesome episode as always...enjoy listening to you share your knowledge about plants..I'm very interesting this topic..I'm starting a shade garden now..trying to mow less! Lol
Oh oh love that cool Hat !!
Thanks for sharing
Hey Flock. Property is looking “fire.” I’ve been tuning in since you started your quest and I’m loving the development of all of your projects.
Is it still cold up there? I see you’re wearing a full-length jacket (or just being fashionable?).
Peace, party-people!
That's right, Sedum ternatum is a succulent that plant to Mediterranean.
In Greece it exists with pink flowers. All your effort and work has paid off beautifully. Congratulations!!!😊❤
Really inspired by this planting an particularly the level-handed approach toward mixing native and non-native plants. I must say that I'm far too much of a control freak to plant so densely, as I feel the need to prevent competition and a 'survival of the fittest' scenario, but I'm eager to see how you get on with this approach
I bet there's tons of indirect LIGHT, in the SHADE these days, 🎉especially with Sun flares. 🎉
Isn't there a catnip for deer, which could be planted, at a distance, to keep them away from your gardens? Would they like a pumpkin patch, or something?
I would specify these are part shade?? Looks incredible
Depending on where the plant is planted, it would be part shade to full shade in this garden. It's eastern facing and blocked by the south and west from the house. So only gets that nice morning sun light in the morning and then is in shade the rest of the day. Those under the skirts of the trees would be full shade too.
@@FlockFingerLakes good to know!
As arum has been eaten by either deer or groundhogs in my garden in Oneonta NY, where deer pressure is INTENSE!
Thanks for showing native plants and low maintenance in a shade garden. Great tutorial and I always enjoy watching your videos.
Getting results like this costs quite a bit, unless one has patience, knowledge, and time to propagate and wait.
More ground covers and a divers variety. What a beautiful garden. So cute how you recorded that little critter! Thank you much guys
Love, love the native plants, I’m adding them as I can find them, not always easy to find. 🇨🇦
Very interesting and informative. I saw some cool plants I have never seen before.
Lovely space coming along nicely. Love it all… I love your cloche hat as well.
Beautiful looking shade garden, Its the bees knees.
I'd love to visit your place!❤😊
I think “Corbett” is yellow.
25:35 might be Viburnum leaf beetles?
Very well could be. Whatever it was, it surprisingly sorted itself out and the leaves looked new and it flowered like CRAZY this year. Obviously nothing that could hold it back, which is heartening.
I guess cassinoides is probably one of these species that are less susceptible to vlb... Would love to see it videoed again with flowers!
Love this video
❤lovely
Phyllostachys aura, aureosulcata and Acer palmatum were all determined to be invasive in NYS but, not all were regulated.
Can you please speak to your decision to keep the Japanese maple?
