Steven Universe Review: S2E23 - Steven's Birthday

  • Steven spent half of his 14th birthday as a teenager and the other half as a baby, but at the end of the ordeal he came out with his very first facial hair! This was a good episode based around expectations and identity, and was also filled with great laughs. A solid continuation to Steven Bomb 4.

    Even if the episode was predictable, IMO it made up for it with the trivia. We finally got Steven's age, we learned Connie is 12.75 years old, and we find out that Greg met Rose/the Crystal Gems when he was 22. We have confirmation that Steven does have romantic feelings for Connie (unless he doesn't fully understand what being the first man would mean). We see a little about the limits of shape shifting, and just so much. That's why I love SU; even in the weakest episodes, there's so much world-building.

      Bmo's primary directive is to entertain a child. But Mo's son was likely "too old" for Bmo upon being built.

  • @YohanBorges
    @YohanBorges 8 лет назад +4

    Maybe the "distortion of heads" was to note that his perspective was changing... This would make sense since the "mistake" only happens during the time he is streched, and it only happened to Connie and Amethyst who are characters equal or taller than Steven and during this sequence he was taller than them.

      +Uncivilized Elk This is my least favorite episode of the bomb. But in no way was it bad I still think it was a really good episode. This episode is in the top 15 episodes on my list even though it is last on my list for Stevenbomb. That is how good this Stevenbomb was. :)

    I feel like the head thing in part for Connie was an attempt at drawing out some form of neoteny, perhaps when storyboarding they felt like adding in the features later for contrast between Steven's "older" form and Connie, and it feels a bit odd when its not in alignment with earlier portions of the episode.

  • @PaszerDye
    @PaszerDye 8 лет назад +31

    It was mentioned by Rebecca and the team that proportions for each character aren't set in stone, which is why the differences in proportion are so drastic as you had observed in the episode. You can actually observe this a lot in last year's final episodes, where in a squatting Peridot was actually much taller than her standing self and closer or equal to Pearl in height. What Rebecca and the crew did clarify is that they will be paying more attention to height ratios rather than individual character proportions. That said, Amethyst will always be slightly taller than Steven, Pearl will always be roughly a head over Amethyst, and Garnet will always be about twice as tall as Steven, etc. It is a cartoon after all, so no matter how much nitpickers nag, this spectrum of the show's presentation will forever be up to their creative discretion.

    I noticed the bobble heads, the Estelle (Stella) album cover, among other things, and they all made me laugh. I thought Steven's comment about being first boy was cute. Steven wants to marry Connie. That's so adorable.

    Honestly, I would continue my trend of long, essay-like comments, but I pretty much agree with everything you said. This was a nice, funny, cute-at-times episode. It wanted to say something, and it did.

      I may start to miss your long essay-like comments then, considering how I had a total blast with the next three episodes, and any criticisms I might include (if I happen to at all) will be really minor and brief. Seriously, this Steven Bomb rocked.

    • @CalebCraft10
      @CalebCraft10 8 лет назад

      +Uncivilized Elk Good sign then. Message Received can be easily misinterpreted as rushed and out of nowhere, so it's nice to see you understand the situation (I had to watch scenes multiple times to fully understand why Peridot did what she did).

    • @crazyanimators5473
      @crazyanimators5473 8 лет назад

      +Uncivilized Elk I thought this Bomb was great too! Some people say it's the weakest, but... I just don't see it. There was so much world building! We learned about Garnet's past, got character insight on Steven & Connie, and even ended the Peridemption :D
      And don't worry, I'm sure my comments will be back soon; we still have 3 more episodes, so I'm sure I'll have *something* to say lol

    I honestly was not worried about Stevens aging as it was showed in the episode "so many birthdays" that his gem can alter his age so I assumed that the emotions Steven feels for Connie will allow him to she regularly. and this was hinted on after he and Connie bonded closer at the end and Steven "spontaneously grew a facial hair"

  • @randfur
    @randfur 8 лет назад

    I didn't notice the head thing explicitly (though something did seem a little weird in those scenes) but your crazy explanation that Steven's body morphing was affecting those around him sounded like an awesome plot premise. Perhaps only to the degree that Steven's perception of them was warped instead of them physically mutating. I'm sure there's a way you could tie that as a metaphor to an interesting moral.

      For the record, I am extremely far from calm in real life. I may have periods of quiet solitude but it's rarely long before I break out into boisterous banter. Though if I'm engaging in analysis of anything, I guess I do become more composed temporarily.

    Honestly, I really hated this Episode, since Connie was a total and hateable jerk for causing all the trouble to the episode and she doesn't even apologize to Steven at the end, and why did Steven had to do all those dumb and Pointless stuff. Also, I think Steven knew he was a baby since he had expressions of like "Oh GOSH, IM A BABY!" and for dumb reasons, The Gems and Greg thought he didn't knew that because they are all ******g idiots,and at least Amethyst and later on Connie did knew about Steven knowing he has been turned into a baby. Also, The entire thing about Steven growing up whenever he wants was really confusing.
