My way, there could be more drama, especially if the girlfriend is a little insecure but now has to rally her courage in order to fight for her love after the pain confesses to the boy. And at the end, the boy can tell his girlfriend that there was no need to fight or compete because it was always going to be her who he wanted to stay with.

Honestly, Mayura wasn't that bad. Granted, she did sort of have a high and mighty attitude, but she wasn't excessively rude to the MC like most FMCs tend to be and even wished him happiness when she believed his fake girlfriend story. And it was kind of obvious that she liked him from the start in my opinion and the MC himself even admitted that he enjoyed spending time with her and only lied to her because he wanted some time for himself. To be honest, some of the "mean childhood friend" stories tend to be kind of exaggerated from the MC's point of view and the FMCs aren't anywhere near as mean as they're made out to be.
I just hope people understand that majority of the manga stories that have this type of overused, abusive heroine with a spineless MC are stories that cater to Japanese people, before it takes in the opinion of viewers globally.
