I just started collecting physical media in September last year. I've been doing digital because I don't want to have to ask someone every hour or two to switch movies for me since I'm bedridden. I ended up losing a few of those digital movies and was told they won't be restored because I'm only renting the right to stream them so long as the company that had rights to the movie didn't change hands. That's what set me on physical media. I really appreciate the channel and the direction its given me since then.

Last week I had film discussion with a coworker. I told her about some films I really liked, many of them respected classics and cult favorites. She had heard about some of them and were interested in those I described the basic plot of (no spoilers of course).
Among those Terry Gilliam's "Brazil" and David Cronenberg's "The Fly". (both of them won Academy Awards prices)
I asked her:"Do you have a bluray player? I can borrow you some of my bluray/dvd films."
She replied:"No, I don't. I stream my films. Maybe I can find the films you mention on streaming..."
I replied:"Yes, maybe.. (I knew they're NOT available). Hm, pity. You could have seen them for free..."
For those of my friends who have their UltraHD/Bluray players this is no issue. I'll gladly borrow my collection of films for free to them.
So all those getting rid of their players are really missing out. I mean me and other collectors of films on physical media mostly borrow our films to people we trust, coworkers and such. This means some people could see tons of films for *free* .
Here's the thing though. Since most people aren't film enthusiasts and only watch the latest blockbuster at the local cineplex the existence of other films and classics is oblivious to them. For them streaming is "enough". For bona fide enthusiasts and collectors it is not.
Don't get me wrong. I stream tv series myself and discover some classics on stream, but I later purchase them dirt cheap online - which btw are *cheaper* than if I purchased them to watch online. And the tv series I really like I purchase on Bluray. Why? Because sooner or later they *will* disappear from the major streaming services and then be offered for a "price". Some of the ones I intended to watch were taken down before I had a chance. Just great...
When I retire in the distant future I can have nostalgia evenings at will and don't dig around online hoping future people haven't relegated these "old series" to the scrap heap (as they can't relate to them).
Anyways. I buy 4k UltraHD version of the films if they're available. But if not I purchase them on Bluray which still is HD and quite adequate. Dvds? Well, some tv series have gone out of print on Bluray so it's dvd or nothing. "International" cinema also rarely comes on bluray and is mostly on dvd.

As someone who grew up on both Beta/VHS and old TV shows like Doctor Who, I am fine with all formats as you're never gonna have everything in the latest and greatest version. As a Doctor Who fan, the only way to "watch" missing episodes from the 60s was to listen to an off-air recording of the soundtrack and squint at off-air "telesnap" photos of the transmission (ir just close my eyes and imagine what it would have looked like). Or sometimes the fans would do reconstructions but they were downloads and low quality, low resolution. So I'm fully aware that to appreciate the full gamut of shows and movies from 1900 to 2024 it means embracing ALL formats. There's some that have not even been released on DVD yet. Be grateful when you have 4k or bluray, but be accepting of anything we get.

Personally I will only buy a DVD if it is of an older TV show or much older movies that rely on practical effects or maybe an older animated movie for nostaliga sake. One example is some TV shows once they went streaming lost their 60 interlaced frames look since they were converter to 30 FPS, which is why when I rip media with this effect, I always use a decent deinterlace method despite it taking forever to render.
Other than that, if I'm buying physical media, at this point I would rather it be at least Blu Ray, or even 4K if it is available, so long as it comes with at least a standard Blu Ray since I only have 1 4K player. If a DVD is also included, awesome, since it gives better compatibility. However, most newer content is so detail heavy that I can't justify DVD for most newer content.

Be interesting to see what Disney's pullout from Australia re physical disc's is going to do to new and used prices there.
Another heads up for fellow media collectors. I've been buying up Dvds in the old Warner cardboard snapcases with plastic frame, assuming the used price is right and I'm interested in the content. Those cases will never be made again, plus many are 2 sided flipper disc's with 16x9 on one side, 4x3 on the other, making them interesting collectibles as this will never be done again either. Unless a film was Original 4x3, full frame 4x3 won't ever be done for wide films again. Some films actually show more in 4x3 format on the top and bottom vs 16x9 or 1.85 counterparts, called Flat
Some dvds have dts es discrete 6.1 channel. While the bluray if available has only 5.1

I'll bet 4k looks bad on a 500" or 1000" screen. They wanted to kill dvd when bluray csme out, and actually planned to kill bluray once 4k came out. Problem is not enough people bought into the gimmick. Dvds outsold blurays for many many years after bluray was released, and 4k discs are only 10% of new physical media sales, which is laughable because it's been out nearly 10 years and most people, unless their current TV breaks or they buy into the gimmick, most people are more than happy with dvds, and there no sign of that trend going anywhere. Dvd sales are still very very good month to month

I refuse to pay for another 4k TV when my friend bought a $5,000 4k TV in 2014, and it was garbage with that soap opera effect which you couldnt turn off in very early high end models. It's a gimmick and SO MANY older movies, even without the soap opera effect, that look terrible in 4k because it's trying to make it SO clear that it looks strange.
Same kinda people say how they would never play a mobile game or older video game because the graphics arent as good as the PS5, so they shun anything but the best looking games, thinking that's the most important thing about a game, how detailed the graphics are, not the story or gameplay or fun factor.
Spending $30 on a movie with zero special features instead of $1 or $2 for the same comedy or rom com basic movie, with dts sound, and way upgraded pictures quality when viewed on a bluray or 4k player. $1 vs $40 for the same thing, but with a small upgrade in picture quality for $39, is 200% not foolish at all. Like the super smart fools that pay $2k for $100 sneakers the could get very good fakes of or similar shoes for $1.9k less. DEF not foolish but a valuable and smart investment. The sneaker market will always be booming. No shortage of brilliant fools convinced their $100 sneakers with ALWAYS be worth $2k-50k so long as they keep telling themselves that. Not foolish at all. Very sound investments. It's those dummies buying gold and stocks and investing in more stable legit markets that should figure out the sneaker game is where the real long term wealth lies. :)
