I just started collecting physical media in September last year. I've been doing digital because I don't want to have to ask someone every hour or two to switch movies for me since I'm bedridden. I ended up losing a few of those digital movies and was told they won't be restored because I'm only renting the right to stream them so long as the company that had rights to the movie didn't change hands. That's what set me on physical media. I really appreciate the channel and the direction its given me since then.
@@McH0rror That's exactly what I've been thinking about doing. I can't work though, so getting money together to do that could take a while. I still need to pick up a decent player.

I hosted a show for 3 Seasons called "Physical Media Format" I mostly reviewed VHS'. I just definitely loved the physical media realm it has more to offer than any digital platform.
Last week I had film discussion with a coworker. I told her about some films I really liked, many of them respected classics and cult favorites. She had heard about some of them and were interested in those I described the basic plot of (no spoilers of course). Among those Terry Gilliam's "Brazil" and David Cronenberg's "The Fly". (both of them won Academy Awards prices) I asked her:"Do you have a bluray player? I can borrow you some of my bluray/dvd films." She replied:"No, I don't. I stream my films. Maybe I can find the films you mention on streaming..." I replied:"Yes, maybe.. (I knew they're NOT available). Hm, pity. You could have seen them for free..." For those of my friends who have their UltraHD/Bluray players this is no issue. I'll gladly borrow my collection of films for free to them. So all those getting rid of their players are really missing out. I mean me and other collectors of films on physical media mostly borrow our films to people we trust, coworkers and such. This means some people could see tons of films for *free* . Here's the thing though. Since most people aren't film enthusiasts and only watch the latest blockbuster at the local cineplex the existence of other films and classics is oblivious to them. For them streaming is "enough". For bona fide enthusiasts and collectors it is not. Don't get me wrong. I stream tv series myself and discover some classics on stream, but I later purchase them dirt cheap online - which btw are *cheaper* than if I purchased them to watch online. And the tv series I really like I purchase on Bluray. Why? Because sooner or later they *will* disappear from the major streaming services and then be offered for a "price". Some of the ones I intended to watch were taken down before I had a chance. Just great... When I retire in the distant future I can have nostalgia evenings at will and don't dig around online hoping future people haven't relegated these "old series" to the scrap heap (as they can't relate to them). Anyways. I buy 4k UltraHD version of the films if they're available. But if not I purchase them on Bluray which still is HD and quite adequate. Dvds? Well, some tv series have gone out of print on Bluray so it's dvd or nothing. "International" cinema also rarely comes on bluray and is mostly on dvd.
People will be sorry when they wake up one day and realize they have been paying for multiple subscriptions for many, many years and truly own nothing to show for it.
Standard blu ray is awesome as you can get older movies from second had stores. But yeah i always buy 4k if i can and sometimes its a waste of money for cash grab titles but i only realise when ive bought it already and then its already too late. Recently bought Creed 3 on 4k and i hope it looks awesome
I don't have a 4k TV yet but have a 4k player not buying a 4k TV until mine breaks down. I do buy 4k now and then as it usually has both formats the only problem my TV is 3D which I love as I have a lot of 3D content which I won't be able to watch on a modern TV.
There a quite a few films that are DVD only; There a few that are VHS only. DVD on a 4k with upconversion is really quite good, on current TV's; The only thing that stops me from buying more 4k is that the movies I am interested and the genres I am interested in; they don't release. The Warner Archive collection is incredible.
i got a dlp projector, 1080p, and dvd still looks amazing at 135inches. just watched predator on dvd, looks good. just started watching red eye, looks amazing on dvd.... But this is region 2 dvd, which is slightly higher definition (576i) than region 1 U.S dvd's (480i).
As someone who grew up on both Beta/VHS and old TV shows like Doctor Who, I am fine with all formats as you're never gonna have everything in the latest and greatest version. As a Doctor Who fan, the only way to "watch" missing episodes from the 60s was to listen to an off-air recording of the soundtrack and squint at off-air "telesnap" photos of the transmission (ir just close my eyes and imagine what it would have looked like). Or sometimes the fans would do reconstructions but they were downloads and low quality, low resolution. So I'm fully aware that to appreciate the full gamut of shows and movies from 1900 to 2024 it means embracing ALL formats. There's some that have not even been released on DVD yet. Be grateful when you have 4k or bluray, but be accepting of anything we get.
If you like older TV shows like Quincy or CHiPS grab those DVDs because I doubt many of them will ever see BR let alone 4K (Colombo got a BR but I believe it was a Japan only release) and golden age films as well. KL has been really good with older cinema but the days of all those B/W releases the studios were putting out during peak DVD are long gone. I try to grab those and if a BR comes around I’ll upgrade.
I just bought the 1997 Snapcase DVD for The Exorcist 😅😂 Because it is the only version without the blue tint as well as the intact Saul Bass Warner logo and the original jump cut of Father Kerras, post 1997 Warner logo has changed and they messed with the colour grade and morphed the jump cut. Personally I will only buy a DVD if it is of an older TV show or much older movies that rely on practical effects or maybe an older animated movie for nostaliga sake. One example is some TV shows once they went streaming lost their 60 interlaced frames look since they were converter to 30 FPS, which is why when I rip media with this effect, I always use a decent deinterlace method despite it taking forever to render. Other than that, if I'm buying physical media, at this point I would rather it be at least Blu Ray, or even 4K if it is available, so long as it comes with at least a standard Blu Ray since I only have 1 4K player. If a DVD is also included, awesome, since it gives better compatibility. However, most newer content is so detail heavy that I can't justify DVD for most newer content.

I feel like if movie studios simply lowered the cost of physical media then they would get more sales. Everything can be pirated online and I bet some people are pirating because of the high cost. A lower cost could mean more sales. But maybe this opportunity was missed already?
Vhs tapes Are garbage nostalgic! Discs 📀 on movies and music is better. Answer this question why use tapes? 📼 They're not even worth it. They're just lame a** nostalgic.

I don’t mind buying DVD,Blueray or 4k my issue is that I am scared they will release it to another higher format later and I payed more to get it in both formats.
100% The only way to actually support the future of physical media is to purchase the future of physical media. There are so few 4k movies because of the lack of support and contrary to what everyone will say, 4k is always a better purchase.
@@tlothompson6935 fully agree. I have a few incomplete 4k sets like SAW, Scream and Terminator, and I refuse to buy DVD or BR to complete the sets. I only want the 4k copies. Also, a detail, but it would look super weird having a BR box next to the rest of the set in 4k.
Convincing people 4k isn't worth it is just allowing 4k and the future of physical media to die. How is buying an older format helping the future of physical media? That's like saying buying cheap ps3 games is helping the future of PS as a whole.
F,ing A Bubba Getting all the disc's I can any format while the thrifting is good. Be interesting to see what Disney's pullout from Australia re physical disc's is going to do to new and used prices there. Another heads up for fellow media collectors. I've been buying up Dvds in the old Warner cardboard snapcases with plastic frame, assuming the used price is right and I'm interested in the content. Those cases will never be made again, plus many are 2 sided flipper disc's with 16x9 on one side, 4x3 on the other, making them interesting collectibles as this will never be done again either. Unless a film was Original 4x3, full frame 4x3 won't ever be done for wide films again. Some films actually show more in 4x3 format on the top and bottom vs 16x9 or 1.85 counterparts, called Flat Some dvds have dts es discrete 6.1 channel. While the bluray if available has only 5.1
4K Discs are Nice but useless because you Only can Play them on a Device that Supports 4K Discs. Normal Blurays and DVDs are better because they can be played everywhere.
It's amazing how they are trying to basically regress us to a time when were at the mercy of whatever they were airing on tv. Only now it's called streaming..lol

I still think that hey should've killed DVD with BluRay coming up. I still can't believe that people still buy this technical crap. Maybe some might be fine with it, but on a 130" projector screen it looks like a pirated copy. 4k is not a must, but very nice for cinemaniacs that have a big love for movies
I'll bet 4k looks bad on a 500" or 1000" screen. They wanted to kill dvd when bluray csme out, and actually planned to kill bluray once 4k came out. Problem is not enough people bought into the gimmick. Dvds outsold blurays for many many years after bluray was released, and 4k discs are only 10% of new physical media sales, which is laughable because it's been out nearly 10 years and most people, unless their current TV breaks or they buy into the gimmick, most people are more than happy with dvds, and there no sign of that trend going anywhere. Dvd sales are still very very good month to month
@@kraftyDevilX taking a product format that basically every American had 1 or probably 3 or 4 players for, then raise that price beyond what people were paying, expecting people to invest in a $150+ into a new player and to start over with their collection. 4k Blu-ray and 4k TVs are dying because the market is realizing that they are complete gimmicks and not worth the money. 4k's resolution is overkill and unnecessary. A perfectly good 1080p Blu-Ray disc or even a 1080p TV gives you the picture quality you need. Don't fall for the 4k scam! Stick with your tried and true 1080p options and enjoy every minute of it.

My parents are all digital but I like to support Blu rays company’s like Kino Lorber because they are putting a lout of great classics
Dumb question but is it worth it to upgrade some titles from blu ray to 4k ? Is there a big difference?
Even though you didn’t directly mention it in this, this kind of reminded me that I should still get DVD releases as well in case, if there aren’t any Blu-rays available for what I’m looking for. At the end of the day I’ve still got a copy of what I’m looking for.
I'll still buy BD or even DVD but it has to be a rare enough title that is unlikely to come to 4K.
If the set looks neat, On my shelf is its new seat.
Some of its expensive but worth it
Question will a 1080p work with a 4k player?
i buy blu ray and 4k only, if the blu ray looks better than the 4k i buy that (T2). the only exception with DVD is when i can’t find the blu ray or 4k at the shop and then after a while i end up upgrading
Oppenheimer sold out 👍everywhere I read Target Best Buy and Walmart
I'm swapping out my collection with steelbooks.
I really wish 4k What's so stinking expensive Yes, it is absolutely stunning. However, it does pinch the pocket a bit. Especially with the ones you have to upgrade your favorites.
Got a question 🤔 can you play a hd dvd on a panasonic 4k ultra blu ray player?
Blurays look so good that a lot of people dont see the point of 4k. I was in that camp until i watched the 4k transfer of From Beyond.
Wise words from a legend
Legend!!!!😂😂😂
I just started the other day, already got a collection going
My 42" Plasma from 2009 still looks great in my bedroom!
Blu ray 💪I'll buy 4k sometimes
I buy 4k when its available home theature buffs are keeping the format alive
The only 4k movie I own is Scott Pilgrim. Everything else is either DVD or Blu-Ray
I know that I'm missing out a lot but I focus only on 4K releases. On other hand I watch remastered old movie on 4k and I'm blow away by them. I don't care that much about modern movies.
I still buy DVD lol. It's always been my favorite format and it's cheaper than blu ray or 4k.
Amen brotha!!
I am still buying physical
Really sucks that a lot of 4K are skipping on the special features. Even some blu-rays don’t have special features that remained exclusive DVD & even VHS. Massive regret of mine was getting rid of Spider-Man 1 & 2 VHS’s, believing those special features were on the DVD’s also
Rocking a 1080p Panasonic plasma! Can’t afford an oled at all so I picked it up used for 100 bucks. What a steal. Blu rays and games look incredible. So good I don’t even care to upgrade for years. Also I still collect vhs and dvd as well since I’m on a budget. They look fantastic still even vhs. Got about 500 vhs tapes from thrift stores and my family and other families. Started with vhs because I was a poor 18 year old who couldn’t afford blu ray. Now I’m 29 and have about 30 blu rays. It’s so awesome I’m finally starting to be able to afford blu rays consistently now. I’ll never get rid of my tapes though I effing love them.
The other day I wanted to watch the shining. It’s ALWAYS streaming expect recently apparently. I don’t have the blu ray… so I busted out my VHS copy and it was the best night ever. It saved my ass
I wish my whole collection could be Blu Rays, sadly a lot of tv shows and movies simply are only released on DVD, but it's still absolutely better than nothing. Love physical media and started my collection a year ago.
I still buy movies on Blu-ray and DVD. Sometimes I still buy music CDs.
I just recently finally upgraded to 4k. Had a 1080p plasma for many years that started going out on me. Blu rays still look really good on the tv though so my old ones aren't going to waste. Been buying 4k blu rays too because screw owning digital movies.
Are people exclusively buying 4k? I still run into a lot of stuff that doesn't have a 4k release? Heck, some don't even have a bluray release.
I buy whatever format the movie is available in
I feel like if movie studios simply lowered the cost of physical media then they would get more sales.
Everything can be pirated online and I bet some people are pirating because of the high cost. A lower cost could mean more sales.
But maybe this opportunity was missed already?
Would love to hear some recommendations for both DVD and Blu Rays to look out for!
i only buy DVDs - where I live it's the only way to get particular old titles, and even new release dvds outnumber blu-ray 3:1
I wanted to see the deadpool movies I knew they were going to be on disney plus but i found both of them for relatively cheap on bluray and 4k
Your Awesome Dude ❤
I buy em all
I still buy blu ray, dvd and vhs if I can get my hands on ones I want
Vhs tapes Are garbage nostalgic!
Discs 📀 on movies and music is better. Answer this question why use tapes? 📼 They're not even worth it. They're just lame a** nostalgic.
@@Supersammy22_290 you’d understand if you didn’t have a tiny wiener. Sorry bud
Have a random question for you, I have a copy of “Awakenings” on DVD, but it plays “Ghost of Mars”- kept waiting for DeNiro and Williams to show up…spoiler they never did 😂
True
I don’t mind buying DVD,Blueray or 4k my issue is that I am scared they will release it to another higher format later and I payed more to get it in both formats.
Blu ray will always be that best quality to price. Even at 4k it's diminishing returns considering the significantly higher price.
What about dvd
The only 4k I have is Spider-Man No Way Home, I keep collecting horror & superhero blu-rays
Said it right brotherrr
Plasma best tech
I choose DVD.
99% of my movies are dvds.
I use my Xbox and it’s good quality
netflix still has the dvd membership thing
Buy all formats buy all players
I disagree. My favorite movies are all on 4k. I didn't buy a premium tv and sound system for nothing. I only want the best.
@@nuggetz4037 Ya I just hate how (at least to me) the bluray boxes just look outdated as well. I like the slick black boxes.
Spot on brother!!!!
Convincing people 4k isn't worth it is just allowing 4k and the future of physical media to die. How is buying an older format helping the future of physical media? That's like saying buying cheap ps3 games is helping the future of PS as a whole.
Preach!

Getting all the disc's I can any format while the thrifting is good.
Some films actually show more in 4x3 format on the top and bottom vs 16x9 or 1.85 counterparts, called Flat
Some dvds have dts es discrete 6.1 channel. While the bluray if available has only 5.1
I collect physical media and buy DVDs in 2024
Well said!
That's what most peep's want to hear...It plays all your disks! I have 3k dvd's/blu-ray/4K and want to play ANY of them. But...which new ones do it all???. I have DVD/Blu-ray players and I am about to get the latest and greatest...Vacuume seal it, for future use. When and or if the internet etc goes dodo...I have the tangable movies, and I can play them. P.s, have the big flat screen as well and put EMP shields on everything, including my house and generator. Extra: City lost all power for 24+hrs...I had full house power and neighbors came to me for Refridge/Freeze/Micro/Stove/Oven/Heat/Cool/TV etc... $450 Gen, 9000wt, tied to house main pwr...Total to do...$650!!! Be kind to your neighbors and share...Even the TV :)
I buy DVDs in the Dollar bid because blu ray and 4k is to expensive.
I still buy DVDs, Blu-ray, and I buy 4K.
I just don't want to drop $X00 for a new 4K TV, when my 1080p tv works fine.
4k tvs are literally only $100 now. For people that are so into media and entertainment that's not a lot of money.
@@tlothompson6935 I was thinking sony 4k... but yeah walmart 4ks are very cheap.
I've been shamed online for only wanting DVDs, I've been shamed by digital media owners, blu-ray owners and 4k owners.
DVDs are great, very cheap especially second hand. Then you can always upgrade any particular films to Blu ray or 4K. Not all films need the upgrade.
I wonder what would have happened if they had made DVDs more expensive than Blu-rays. People might have switched at a larger rate
@@kraftyDevilX Interesting thought, but I suppose it's super clear why they wouldnt and disnt do something like that...
@@AdaptiveRider I guess it won't be clear until you elaborate. As you've pointed out in another post - I have no idea what you're thinking.
@@kraftyDevilX taking a product format that basically every American had 1 or probably 3 or 4 players for, then raise that price beyond what people were paying, expecting people to invest in a $150+ into a new player and to start over with their collection.
Could you see Sony doing that with PS3 games when the PS4 came out? Increasing the price of PS3 games hoping people with buy a $400 new player to save a few bucks on continuing to buy PS3 games
I still buy DVD am I cool? 😂
At the end of the day, buy whatever you want and don’t listen to people like this
I'm going to buy Kill Bill in Blu-Ray...
