The problem with finding out about KPOP through BTS first is that it's really hard to like another group because BTS's music is incomparable to other group's music. I think with BTS's music you can really feel their sincerity and love for music. I used to love 1st and 2nd gen KPOP music, but then fell out of love with it because there was no originality and every new group just started sounding the same. BTS is the reason why I got back into it. It was really refreshing to see people make music because they love the art and not for the accolades.

Exactly this and it still is that way with a few exceptions. Idol industry is considered not only in Korea but Worldwide and especially by music critics and professionals extremely superficial and manufactured. BTS faced a lot of hardships because of that bad image. Like literally the KMA Committee and the Grammy Director has pointed that out directly and emphasized that difference that made BTS great. There's also a whole video by music critic Kim Young Dae that highlights this as well and the reason Grammy's do not take any other idols into consideration.

I already had a lot of respect for BTS, but this song made me admire them way much more. More than a band, more than 3 rappers and 4 vocalists BTS are artists, that’s what makes them special. Through the use of symbolisms they always share a message that is way much more profound than what one can think at first, and that message has impacted thousands, millions of fans
Many are good singers and good rappers, but artists are those who speak through their art

I'm a writer who hasn't been able to write for over a year (2020 sucked all the creativity out of me) and this was the song that made me an ARMY. It helps to know that others- even BTS- feel that same fear of, 'What if my fire's gone out, what if all I've got left is ashes, who am I going to be without my greatest enjoyment and challenge?' If they can fight past their burnout and enjoy making music again, maybe I can work past my silence as well. They're a comfort, and maybe, a source of inspiration.

Its so hard, but you really just have to just keep writing, don't stop and don't think about it, just keep going until your out of ideas, then go back and edit, and your own words will give you more inspiration 😁😁😁😊😊😊😊 I know that you can do it😁😁 I give you my purple Army heart!!😂😁😊🥰💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

This is from the album Map of the soul, inspired by Karl Jung the philosopher who talks of Persona, Shadow and Ego as a person's journey to find oneself.
After dealing with Persona there were songs dealing with shadow (fear) and BTS talks of their fear of losing their art and interest in it. Martha Grahm a dancer is quoted here who said it would be her first death. So you have the first shadow in this mv which does not correspond, is moving about crazily, symbolising active fear, the second shadow stands still, the third shadow settles down, or has been accepted as part of the person.
Interlude shadow, from the same album by Suga is another masterpiece and you might like it right up there alongside Black swan.
I am amused by your constant use of word KPOP. :)

Black swan was not my favorite
at first but it resonates so differently now.
I grew fond of it due to its meaning.
    It’s undeniable it’s a masterpiece.
It had even made you stand up.
    And clapped.
At least they have an audience.
They made this music video in an empty theater.
Isn’t it the ultimate fear for an artist to have no viewer? If as a creator you taste applause. Isn’t it a drag ? Because each unsuccessful performance must an ordeal
an artist might be a Phoenix but he still has an expiration date like an athlete.
Those were not pandemic times. Empty theater was not the norm
I spent ten years being an avid viewer of live performances.
People put so much effort into being creative
In my opinion when they create blood sweat and tears. It was pivotal.
Their productions embodied universal issues and paved their journey as artists.

    Background information:
Carl Jung ( famous psychologist, writer of the book Map Of the Soul, which is in fact the name of BTS album series Map of the soul:persona, and Map of the soul:7) has a theory known as Jungian psychology. There he talks about 3 part of human mind PERSONA (the personality trait, attitude we show to the world)
SHADOW ( our darkest, suppressed thoughts, feelings, fear. Things we do not show to other people and sometime don't accept it to ourselves. Feelings like jealousy, insecurity, etc)
EGO ( our most conscious self, a self who knows our shadow and persona both and try to maintain balance)
These 3 elements decided our personality.
    Map of the soul:
This album start with Intro: Persona, in the middle we get Interlude: Shadow and last song is Outro:EGO.
Black Swan falls is the next song after Shadow. In Shadow ( Suga solo song) Suga talks about his fear and the downside of fame. So as a immediate follow up Black Swan is BTS being scared that their shadow (fear, pressure of fame, not being able to live a normal adult life ). They are scared that they will drown in their shadow to the point that they would lose passion for music. But in the middle of song BTS switch up the lyrics and said but one day they look deep inside themselves, and they saw themselves working in their music studio and they remember why they started music in the first place, they still love music more than they are scared of fame. So they will continue making music irrespective of their enternal shadow and external pressure.
Black Swan movie: a psychological thriller using concept of shadow and persona. What happen when the protagonist who has been suppressing her shadow for years to wear this mask (persona), let her grip lose on the shadow. Chaos break, she decend into madness. And pay the ultimate price. The idea of two part of a human mind is represented through two swan - white ( happy innocent side of us what people usually see, Persona) and black ( the 'not so good' side we suppressed, shadow). The movie is also about an artist being passionate but paying a high price because they could not accept and intigrate their shadow with their daily life ( this idea came from Jungian psychology, where failing to merge all these 3 identity, known as individuation, one have to lose their sanity).
Deep stuff... I know. If you get it, you are super smart, if you did not you are absolutely fine too. We, ARMY have been reading psychology and s*** because BTS wants to talk about deeper issues.
So the song is an exploration of the psyche of a passionate artist. But a lot of non artist like me can relate to this too on a different level.

i've always loved music. i'm 36. i'm partial to rock (and most of its sub-genres) and my favorite is pearl jam. i've been in a band and also was part of a choir. i sometimes write my own music and play the guitar. just saying where i'm coming from in terms of music. i'm into every genre, as long as it delivers. i've listened to kpop since 2010. i'd say i've always just been song-centric cos i'm deeply into lyricism so it takes a lot for me to full-on support an artist. i do love cnblue (cos they're a band) and mamamoo (cos of their lyricism and involvement with their music). but, after almost a decade of listening to kpop, bts took me to a different level of passion for it. like you, back in feb 2018 when i first started diving deep, i was also doing some hasty generalizations i wasn't proud of - the army is intense (not just with antis but with toxic armys too - you'll def be corrected if you're being tactless or rude). i thought it was petty, the fight that's inside army's heart for bts. but with that said, i'm looking forward to your journey because if you really want to understand where this "fire" is coming from, you'd know why armys are protective. that's not an excuse to be rude but it's mainly for your understanding, and again, not all armys are like that. this fandom is extremely diverse so it's kinda sad when a newcomer openly calls out the entirety of it as "unhealthy." i hate to point this out but "some" (there's really a lot for hate to trend lol) fans from several fandoms were the first to announce and trend on twitter that they don't want bts and army as part of kpop. we're the biggest fandom and we never trended a hate hashtag, in respect to the other artists and people in general. but time and again, both bts and army have been put in situations where many kpop fans join forces to shade and/or directly hate on army and bts. or, when there's voting, even if their faves aren't part of it, they collab with other haters to pull us down. this is why some armys are openly saying they're here for bts and bts only. i know you said you dislike "politics" so if that's the case then i'd appreciate you stop hinting on armys being rude. every fandom has toxic fans.
i'm really happy you enjoyed black swan. it's beautiful. 💜

The genre is BTS. BTS is beyond Kpop (which to me is a term to represent the popular music industry in Korea). They are beyond that industry - they are TRUE ARTISTS! My favorite artists for a reason - you should listen to their full discography and make sure you ALWAYS read the lyrics. These men are so talented and engrossed in their work - from composition, to production, to lyrics, to performance, to concepts. They give 100%+ to their art and it shows - I respect them so much and I will never refer to them as kpop cuz it's honestly a watered-down term and, to me, dilutes how much respect they deserve as artists.

You always mention that we shouldn't be disrespectful to other artists when talking abt army ... I really don't know what comments you read that shocked you that much but I can promise that we're mostly very chill. We are passionate yes, but we only give BTS, and people who genuinely like BTS, our utmost attention. So whatever negative comments you saw, I wish you would try to put it aside cuz it's not one of our characteristics and we don't claim those people lol

      @viannebelle 3 года назад +1

I’ve heard them mention ARMY like that too and wonder what they read. BTS has been through a lot of bs and extremely unfair treatment for their whole existence so it’s natural that their fans get defensive and want to protect them, but I assume most of the really bad/ignorant comments are from sad, mean, 12 year olds. So it’s a bummer that those comments stand out so much to people, tho I know it’s easier to remember negativity rather that other things. But I promise most of us are not that! Most of us want BTS to be as proud of us as we are of them, and they are the opposite of mean and hurtful and negative.

I know BTS makes hits and amazing songs all the time, but I really truly think Black Swan might be their best work they’ve done. As a concept it’s hauntingly beautiful, it sounds incredible in both versions, the live performance they did recently was awe-inspiring, and I think it’s a song that will age incredibly well, which can’t be said for many kpop songs. That and the fact it ties into Interlude:Shadow as well as SUGAS Interlude from Halsey’s Manic album in terms of themes puts it to the top for me.

2nd comment and I've posted this before but I think it still holds up. Hopefully you'll see it 🙂👋🏿💜
Since you both are athletes, maybe you would understand the "fanwars" if you imagined the different groups as different sports teams. While some people may enjoy watching basketball in general and have a favorite team followed by a few others they're willing to root for if their faves aren't playing, other people generally solely support their team and that's it. Contrary to popular opinion about music not being competitive, music is very much a competition and fandoms operate the same way in music. As a member of BTS ARMY stan Twitter, I see it obviously with other Korean acts but I also see it in the Western industry (think Selena stans vs Ari stans, Nicki vs Cardi, etc.), afrobeats (Wizkid vs Burna Boy vs Davido vs Rema stans), etc. The same convos about who's the g.o.a.t. (MJ vs King James vs Kobe (RIP), etc.) happens in those spaces as they do in music spaces and that's some of what plays out in your comments section.
While I don't think of myself as extreme as some of my fandom, I do wade in from time to time because I dislike misinformation and I do genuinely find it laughable that some of BTS' achievements are often provided as proof of how well the whole kpop industry is doing in certain places when it's clear based on data that BTS is on a very different scale than many other South Korean acts or music acts globally. Being factual about their impact in no way takes away from the other talented people within the same industry but yes, I'm loud about their impact because it's consistently being diminished by other stans and the media (globally). This is on top of the racist remarks that have happened numerous times from other stans and media (to be clear, I'm not saying you two said anything racist. I'm spelling this out to avoid any confusion later on)
Anyway all this being said, I'm glad you're enjoying what you react to and are being honest with what you do and don't like. I don't expect you to like everything I like and surprise, I don't always love everything that BTS does but I appreciate your respectful way of speaking about them and the other acts you watch. Even though BTS is my fave, I do check out other artists' new releases because I love music and it's nice to see that you do too. 👋🏿🙂💜

Also as a general follow up, I'm absolutely not endorsing the extreme things that happen within fandoms so my comment is not in defense of threats or anything like that. Lastly, please know that trolls are very much a part of every fandom so naturally that part tends to get the most attention. 🙂💜👋🏿

I would add that losing passion for creativity is the biggest fear of each artist unless it's a fake love (pun intended, as "Fake Love" is another BTS' huge artistic creation). Being for many decades the visual artist myself, I have had experienced the creativity's crisis a few times, and every time it has scared me more than anything else in my life, especially when thought I've lost the passion forever.

Hey guys! Thank you for reacting to this song! I love it, especially the lyrics, because it's so genuine. It made me respect and admire BTS even more. Also, thank you for sharing your story with us. I really admire you guys. Just want to make a side note, because I noticed in a couple of your videos that you seem to have some "resentment" towards ARMYs (sorry, don't know if this is the right word, but english isn't my first language and sometimes it’s hard to express what I want to say).
I’ve been a fan of BTS since 2015 and since then I saw many toxic fans in every single kpop fandom in every social platform. I’ve never understood why, because even though I’m not familiar with many groups, I know that they always try to send a positive message to their fans. Unfortunately, this is a common thing in every group of fans, be it of music, sports or whatever, there is always some bad apples. Sometimes people say that “ARMY is the most toxic fandom”, but it just seems that way because we are a really huge gigantic fandom. So obviously, there will be a higher number of toxic “fans”. Which in no way is an excuse for how these people act. I don’t agree with their behavior as well and usually real ARMYs call them out. What some people fail to understand is that, as in every fandom, they don’t represent the majority.
The great majority of ARMYs are kind and appreciate a sincere reaction (usually, we can notice when reactors are just saying what they think we want to hear and aren’t being really honest, so we just stop watching them). If people don’t like BTS, it’s totally ok. We respect them (at least the great majority), as everyone is entitled to their own opinion and BTS might not be their cup of tea. We just don’t appreciate when people express themselves in a really rude and disrespectful way. So, thank you for giving us sincere reactions and always being so respectful to the guys. It’s fine if you don’t like some BTS songs that you hear in the future and everyone should respect you. If someone says the opposite, just ignore these ignorant people. Anyways, sorry for the huge text. I’m patiently waiting for more reactions. Thank you!

I think understanding this song is not as simple as just using the Martha Graham quote on artistic block though this readily can provide a relatable experience many of us go through. To me, it is best integrated into the entire Map of the Soul concept which derives from the psychology of Karl Jung. BTS albums often tend to be thematic, not understood simply as a collection of single songs. Black Swan readily combines with Persona, Shadow, On, Louder than Bombs, and Ego to create a thematic ark ultimately speaking to the concept of individuation as proponed by Jung.

I can totally relate to Black Swan and to your stories (including Christine). I’ve always been creative but didn’t go to art school. I took up Accountancy and now working as an accountant, working 10-12hrs a day (sometimes more). Never really developed my art until late 2019 when I was able to buy an ipad and finally tried to improve my digital. Up until now I’m struggling to find time to do artworks, and I can’t even resign in my work because its pandemic. ☹️
Anyway, 7th sense is the best kpop debut song ever. Not the best kpop song, but its there at the top. And I have to agree with Christine, Black Swan is better lyrically. Wish y’all watched the art film tho.
Also, to add on your last remarks, i hope ppl stop guilt tripping ARMYs for not listening to other kpop grps. You do you. You listen to what you want. Been a kpop fan since 2009 and I tell you, i dont even know every single kpop group and kpop song out there. Someone don’t have to know every single group to feel relevant or validated.

BTS has fought from day 1. You really need to watch the videos, BTS Hardships, and BTS Heartbreaking Story, to get an understanding of why ARMY is so fierce. Nobody has been treated and had all other companies and fandoms working against them like BTS has. It is hard to believe what has been done to them, and how they never gave up. I think you will be shocked, and better understand their fandom. And, they still have to fight, after accomplishing so much.

Truth is that while i mostly listen to BTS, Kdrama has opened my eyes and ears to so many songs that I've gone on to purchase. black swan is best song of 2020 said by many articles.... it just has soo deep meaning and tells the story of many people.....this song is legend made by legends. there are many kpop idols groups but i think bts is really different from all in aspects how they are not afraid to talk openly about the dark issues of this society which can't be seen in any other groups. usually kpop is more like a marketed singers trained hard at young age and kindly owned by agencies they belong to , they don't even have rights to say anything without counsulting their agency and there is the difference bts has, bighit ceo bang PD has said in his interviews that he was not strict on boys... he gave them the artistry freedom to write their thoughts and speak infront of world, boys also engaed themself truly with every thing, and this is the reason why bts is more than kpop. they speak their mind through their songs, they are not afraid to talk about sensitive topics, they more than just a boyband.
i became their fan in 2015 , but slowly the meaning behind their each songs made me respect the even more. its as if they are telling our story through their songs...
i am inspired by them and i highly respect them.

This song gave everyone insight on the internal struggle of a worldwide artists journey through losing direction and that first love (music) but rediscovering themselves within it. An absolute masterpiece, the orchestra version is my favorite for sure. My first passion has always been music, when singing wholeheartedly it heals my soul, unfortunately I’m unsure when it began but lately i feel muted. I feel like i lost my voice and I’m timid even when I’m with myself.... it really does feel like a first death when you’re not doing what you love.
