I just forwarded this important tip to my son and son in law. I hope it saves them from some of the minor injuries from when I was their age splitting wood for the woodstove. Thanks.
Omg I still haven't gotten over seeing that girl on Naked and afraid just totally hack into her forearm and get airlifted off the show. Gave me a bit of fear/respect of the tool. This is a really underrated tip.
Great tip! I scare the crap out of people when I split wood with my hatchet . I’ve been splitting kindling since I was about seven. I don’t even watch when I cut and face who I’m talking to. It’s funny to watch their eyes get wide open and watch what I’m doing instead of facing me when I’m talking. I just cut away. My hatchet is rarely very sharp anyway. So far so good I haven’t ever had an accident. Your video is a really good tip.
I was unfamiliar with this term until seeing your video; however, I taught this principle to my grandsons [6 and 8]. They quickly mastered the skill and understood it's value (the younger boy had previously smacked himself! )
Top tip for any situation for working outdoors on your own. Assume the worst is going to happen with tools. Be as safe as possible. Cut your hand open or lose a finger and everything just gets 10 times harder even if you don't bleed to death or die of infection you might not get that fire started or that shelter erected. Even putting on clothes or opening your backpack is really hard.
Thanks for bringing that information back. I learned that from Cliff Jacobson maybe 30 years ago, he, like you, has some great tips with his "camping secrets" series. I remember him calling it a "keeper stick".
Great reminder Dan. I was wondering if you or any of your subscribers have seen the Desert Dog Outdoors video where he is calling what we do stupid? That is actually the title of the video, "Is Bushcraft Stupid". I thought it was a joke at first, but he seriously thinks we are stupid
My friend was splitting wood with a handaxe. He was holding the wood and striking it. He just nicked himself and bled. But it could have been much worse. A sissy stick is a good idea.
Dont try to cut small pieces vertically. Place them on the face of the axe horizontally, gripping both axe and stick safely then split it on your stump. It works best splitting one end then twisting your axe to complete the split. Far more control this way than holding things in place with a stick.
I’ve had to stop adults and show them this because they were holding small pieces and making kindling doing full swings and it made me and a few others nervous
Dan...nothing sissy about safety. I have seen experts..yes..EXPERTS(like yourself), do not utilize "the third hand"...sooo...I rather be a sissy than stupid like those so called "experts"! Like you said, it's better to have the third hand, than a very serious mechanical injury (like cutting off fingers, hands, exc.)that could lead into disastrous and even..deadly situations. I shake my head..every time I see these "experts" not utilizing the third hand. That's not being a wimp to use the third hand, that's being wise. Great video Dan! I'm very happy that you stepped up and gave that safety tip. Let's go safe into the New Year🎉
I'm a sissy, you can tell by my 10 fingers. i have used this trick for decades. and for our next trick: dont ½ the block of wood each chop. cut off smaller ready to use bits. that way the block on the chop stays stable for longer and you have to be a sissy less often.
Hey Dan , I've always enjoyed most of your content over the years but I've noticed recently the material is not the same. It's very remedial skill level & not much time or effort put in . I know a lot of your viewers may be new to the outdoors so covering extreme basics & quick tips may be necessary . I'd like to see more in depth topics & real skills that appeal more to the seasoned woodsman . Please understand I appreciate your channel & support your work completly, I' just wanted to share a little constructive criticism with you . Have s great year ahead my friend. Stay in the BUSH !
You can also use a dull hatchet and hit it soft enough that it will start into the grain but not hurt your fingers if you hit them. Then once the axe is stuck in the grain you can pound them both into your stump until it splits.
So this is the bushcraft version of the tablesaw push stick that saves fingers. Got it. 👍🏻
This is a great idea! I always used to get a friend to hold the wood for me. Now I'll not lose so many friends! Take care and God bless.
Also a great tip. :)

Great idea thank you

Such a simple tip, I will use this from now on.
Such a simple yet sooo great and important Tip! ❤
Thx for your content.
Thank you. HAPPY NEW YEAR. I love all of my fingers!!!
Fingers are good. 😊
I heat with woodstove; awesome idea I hadn't thought of. Thank you!

Excellent timing! I need to make smaller pieces to fit into my new hot tent stove. This will make it so much easier and safer. Thank you so much!
Been teaching this for years- I call it a ‘silly’ stick- when the students ask why- i say it would be silly to lose your fingers!! Great tip!! 👍🏻
Happy New Year brother and your family and everyone from Syracuse NY and a outstanding reminder
Thanks !!! Never thought of that
Great tip. Thanks for sharing

Absolutely awesome content as always ❤ thank you and Happy New Year to you and your family
Great video I like all my fingers and thumbs.😅
Saving fingers one video at a time
👍🏼
Thank you for sharing
Back to bushcraft tips! Nice! I wonder if 2025 is the year I replace my hardware store axe with a real nice one!
I cut the tip of my finger off trying to hold a peice of wood, from then on i became a sissy. Great videos and greetings from Denmark!
Great Tip!!😊😊

Great advice 👍
Great tip, I’m cutting kinding every day to start my wood stove and I can’t wait to try your sissy stick
Great idea thank you for sharing
top tip.. HNY from UK
Especially good in the cold or before that first coffee.
Hi Dan Wowak thank you so much for sharing your experience and knowledge!! Happy new year my friend be well!! 👍🏿👍🏿❤️❤️💯💯
Yep, this is good. I always use a sissy stick. 😊
Good job on the video
Love it, or putting the wood against the axe handle and axe and swing both!
Good stuff

Thanks
We called it a dead finger in Scouts
That is a great idea
Happy new year, yes, I like all my fingers to make it home from camping.😂😂 . Maybe it's a (smarty ) stick.🤔 Cuz there's a WHY IN IT 😂😂
Great video
👍 great safety video 👍
Good stuff 🇺🇸 🇳🇿
Hey Coalcracker, shout out from the northeast side of Penn's Woods. Go Eagles!!
Great safety idea, but you need to call this a Manly Manipulator, or since you're using the stick's end... Just the Tip 😊
I've been holding it with one hand and praying I don't chop my fingers off, maybe I'll try this lol
"Hey Stubby? Why you usin' that sissy stick?"
Stubby:
Happy Newyear sissy :)
Hi Dan never mind sissy it ain't sissy to use common sense! Stay safe. ATB. Nigel
My friend was splitting wood with a handaxe. He was holding the wood and striking it. He just nicked himself and bled. But it could have been much worse. A sissy stick is a good idea.
I seem to remember one Alone participant who would have seriously benefited from this technique...
Sissy Stick. The termed was coined by the man now known as “Stumpy”. 😂
My sissy stick out at camp is a long pair of tongs we use for the fire.
Nice.
Do another video on Axe safety for larger cuts. Keep your body out of the way. Have a barrier. Etc etc...
Handy!
Dont try to cut small pieces vertically. Place them on the face of the axe horizontally, gripping both axe and stick safely then split it on your stump. It works best splitting one end then twisting your axe to complete the split. Far more control this way than holding things in place with a stick.
Good training item. Many people aren’t familiar with an axe; they could be better off buying their firewood?

I've been seeing a lot of people post this tip lately. I think the universe is speaking to me😅
Mary Kate of season 2 is testament to why you should be careful with an axe...
Most importantly nobody wants to lose their jonson
I’ve had to stop adults and show them this because they were holding small pieces and making kindling doing full swings and it made me and a few others nervous
Would you recommend using the stick even using a camp hatchet ?
How come you make safety look good instead of awkward and complicated.
Maybe re-baptise it to Smart stick...
👍👍👍👍👍👍
What axe is that
😎👍
😂👊🏻 excellent
Well, at least if you lose a finger you got 9 more 😅

Yup. Never worth the risk. Especially, when solo adventuring!
Be careful with that axe or you'll find yourself being known as Lefty
You do that like you've done it before.
All in favor of renaming it from "Sissy Stick" to "SMART Stick", say Aye!
(or click the Like button, your choice)
i did not use a sissy stick in the middle of the night and i accidentally cut my thumb
This seems needlessly complicated.
I said years ago I'd rather use a sissy stick than be a dumbass with a missing thumb or worse, especially when freezing and hands are shakey.
I'm a sissy, you can tell by my 10 fingers.
i have used this trick for decades.
and for our next trick:
dont ½ the block of wood each chop. cut off smaller ready to use bits. that way the block on the chop stays stable for longer and you have to be a sissy less often.

es una broma no?
I wouldn't call it a sissy stick , l would call it smart stick !
Good advice
Cowboy up ,you got at least ten chances to practice your aim and hand eye coordination with an ax and chicks dig scares .win : win
