- The Leatherman Rebar & Supertool 300 are both awesome mid quality multitools with a nearly identical toolset in different sized packages. For me the Rebar dimensions make much more sense, but people with larger hands or heavy duty work may prefer the ST300. It's important to note that these knives draw upon the heritage of the Leatherman PST (Pocket Survival Tool), and other early designs, and feature only internalized, two handed tools.
I have previously owned a Leatherman Rebar, which I had to return to the store because it started rusting after being rinsed under plain old tap water. Don't know if that's a common issue or not, but I have heard mostly positive reports on these tools overall.

I had to hold myself back when he talked about his rusting file because he “washed it with water and let it dry on the rack”,
i am an owner of the supertool 300. as a big person, the size is not only better for my hands, but almost on the small side. i dont see why so many people complain about it being ten ounces, as if i recall correctly an item such as an iphone is comparable in weight, and is carried in the pockets of many people every day without complaint. ps, never, ever use water to wash off a file.
I just bought the Super Tool 300 earlier today and I love it. It's big for big jobs, but not too heavy like the Surge. The surge is like the Wave but bigger. The ST 300 is like the Rebar but bigger, and I prefer the ST300 like I said. This tool is awesome indeed. It has to be the king of all multi-tools because this tool is a classic and is used by people everywhere. This tool is also easy to clean as well. I really love the Super Tool 300, I just can't find anything wrong with it at all!!!

Funny. I'm a woman, built my own home. Used an older leatherman for a lot of tasks and found I actually prefer the larger 300 because it's more heavy duty and I can get better leverage when using it on major projects. The smaller ones just aren't enough for serious jobs and often hurt my hands.
I think the best combo is a Rebar for edc and supertool 300 EOD for bugout/survival bag.
I love my ST300. Like my take everywhere tool box. One thing about it is it needs to keep oiled up because it wants to rust. Its heavy at first but on the belt it feels weightless. I'm a welder and always use this. Wire cutters are great especially
Great video, but please tell me you're joking with the file, files are very hard steel, they are prone to rust because of it, never use water on a file, if you need to clean it, use oil.
Agreed. Oil oil oil. Water in atmosphere is bad enough for it in the first place.
well, i must admit: I found a supertool atbottom of a boat, the owner told me he lost it years ago. all but the knives were ok. After opening beer bottles with it we gave it a proper burial into the lake.

Old video I know, but I love having an awl for uses like scraping, scratching, or punching holes that might bugger up the edge of a knife blade. Basically if it could be considered abuse to a knife blade, use the awl! lol
As far as the rust issue... I know it was addressed in the past comments, but for people who watch this now, any file worth having will rust (except maybe a diamond file but that's a different animal). Clean with a wire brush and oil, never water.
I've seen many people experiencing rust on their leatherman tools. Unfortunately, this is a kind of a feature, first they made stainless steel, and then they add much carbon to make it stronger, and that carbon makes it vulnerable to rust. On the other hand the Swiss tools don't rust, because their steel is softer. This is a trade situation, you gain something and you lose something else.
True. I always keep my st300 oiled up. I used the blade with greasy/salty hands once and bam! Rusted where i touched it. It's a bit too much effort to care for it imo. In the outdoors where it's rough handled would go to hell pretty quick. But it's still better than most other tools that have a laminated steel.
@@Mikey-ym6ok I live 300m from the salty Mediterranean, with steady wind from off the sea into my flat. No rust problem! A few dots, but between WD40 and a light oil and a wipe, my multitools are doing fine. Including a 22 year old Wave, Supertool, and Swisstool. All three good--just a few rust dots.
Who knows why some have rust problems with Leatherman, and most not. Usually fisherman, and sailors report rust.
Have to clean and apply a protectant over the tool every 6 months to help stop the rust
With two blades and wire cutters I don't think it needs scissors. But everyone's different. Plus I almost always have scissors on my key chain SAK. :)
I'm glad the rebar is internal only. I've had too many external tools and knives open up in my pocket. I don't trust external tools.
FYI They are not riveted. There is a screw on one side . They can be tightened or removed. You can use vice grips on one side and pliers on the other. grate review.

Yep.. they are not hex fasteners on the wave. It's safety Torx. Wingman and Sidekick are held together with Torx. Being able to take something apart to clean and repair does make a tool superior to a riveted design. Particularly when the warranty runs out, is voided, or cannot be honored. You do not have to replace the tool if it gets too loose from getting broken in. You can tighten it to suit your personal taste. Only bad thing is that the Super Tool and Rebar use Leatherman proprietary fasteners to hold them together so making a tool or tightening and loosening them without damaging the finish of the tool itself is made difficult for the owner.
What we do with a Super Tool 300 is WORK. Real work that usually requires a toolbox and a bunch of full sized tools. The 300 is the only multi-tool that can replace a toolbox for real jobs. And, come on, complaining about weight on something like this is silly. You're a husky lad, and you can carry the weight with no problem. After a few days, I guarantee you won't even realize it's on your belt. I constantly reach down to check whether I've remembered to put it on that morning. It's funny how almost no one complains about the weight of a handgun, plus a couple of spare magazines, which can weight five pounds, but they complain terribly about the few ounces a multi-tool weighs. The difference in weight between the two Leatherman is miniscule. People I know who carry the 300 add another half a pound of more inside the pouch, and still don't notice the weight. I carry a lighter, a ferro rod, a Leatherman Micro, a Stockman pocketknife, and a Trapper inside the pouch, and still don't even realize I'm carrying it.
I carry my Skeletool, in my front left pocket (I usually just wear sweatpants everywhere). I used to carry my Wave before, but it would make the pocket swing around alot while walking. The wave would then bang into my leg all the time and that would be quite uncomfortable. So the weight does matter in some EDC cases. If you use a belt holster or wear pants with better pockets the weight doesn't make much of a difference though.
@@MuumiPeikkoX The problem here is that you "usually just wear sweat pants everywhere"... How prepared to work can you be if that's the case? The first thing I'd change in your EDC is real pants, that can actually handle some work. Then maybe your points could be taken seriously 😁

ST300 is for weaklings who arent strong enough to carry a toolchest. Also broke-assed weaklings who are losers and don't make enough money to buy proper tools for the job.
But on a serious note, multitools are not for serious tradesmen or even home-DIYers, they're portable solutions for when you're out and about and don't have access to the dedicated toolbox at work, home or in your vehicle. Hence they are supposed to be compact and weight is an issue.
I consider the Supertool 300 an ideal "survival multitool" for a bugout bag or something similar. The larger size means a larger saw and file for wood working. The awl is actually quite useful. It can be used for drilling belt holes, more helpful than you might think when you're on the trail for a few days and thin your waistline more than you thought you would. It can also drill thin holes in wood to thread cord through if you need to build something or be used to strike a firesteel if need be. Scissors have proven less necessary in this type of role for me. A good alternative if you want scissors is the new version of the Surge but I do prefer the fixed tools of the Supertool in an outdoor role like this because I know I won't have to worry about losing bits or replacement blades or about the possibility of the retention spring getting damaged on the bit retainer. With all this said, I don't currently own a Supertool 300 (will change that soon enough) and I do own the Surge, a Rebar, a Charge, and a Swisstool Spirit X among some other smaller tools and SAKs. I'm never happy with just one tool, for some reason I need to have a bunch for different purposes. :P

These are the 2 multi tools i have settled on. Rebar for EDC (and has never rusted and i live on the coast in florida). The 300 i have in a black oxide for backpacking...its the most boom-proof leatherman IMHO. Just my experiences....thxs for vid!
PS the awl i use alot for aggressive hole boring...the blade tip would snap in a second...wish they would use at least 440 or better , or give us the option to pay more for a better steel!
Thanks I have a rebar been thinking of a 300 I use this tool a lot when bicycle touring. And there is tools when it is closed I use this function to straighten my disc brake rotors and when closed it makes a better bottle opener. I wish the metal file was on the other side.

my boyfriend has the supertool 300 and has used it tons of times and came in handy but he noticed some surface rust on the handles
Nice comparison thx :) In fact though both of them are adjustable, cause the "pins" are actually screws. If you have really narrow needlenose pliers, it's not a big deal to unscrew them. Greetings from Germany!
What do people do with a multi tool that large? Work for a living
You don't know what anyone would be doing that anyone would need a multi-tool this large? I have two of both the rebar and the 300. I only carry the rebar when edc-ing in everyday situations, and only carry the 300 on job sites for many different kinds of construction. Maybe that's something you don't do much of, but I can assure you need that heft and strength when bearing down and using these multi-tools for every day hard use and abuse. Everyday stuff is fine for Rebar but not hardcore use and abuse, you need that 'overkill' for that.
Everyone is a bit different. The scissors on MTs have never worked well for me and my big hands. Every time I attempt to use them, I end up frustrated and just use the/a blade for the cutting task at hand.
Now I have the ST300 and am a happy camper and the tools with scissors sit in a drawer. I also carry a knife that I’m able to use quickly with one hand, so having a blade on the outside of the MT is not needed. Weight is of no concern at this point. The only time I notice it’s there is when my arm touches the case when I’m ready to grab for it.
Another reason the 300 works for me is, I work on heavier machinery, so a smaller MT wouldn’t hold up over time with the abuse. I always attempt to use the correct tool for the job first and only go to the 300 in a pinch, if the correct tool is not close by.
I see the ST300 as a hard working blue collar multi-tool and the others as ‘home gamer’ tools, (as AvE would put it). They have their place, which is not on my belt.
We live in a time of abundance, there are options that work for everyone.

Good review on the rebar &other tools. In your previous multitool vid, your friend wit the multitool collection prefers the rebar. We need an update.
With rust,i live near the ocean &no rust. Sometimes i rinse it with tap water,air dry and wipe with paper towels. I got my rebar as a combo with the micra.
Also why i chose the rebar was because of it being "people friendly" unlike the wave which is 'knife-y'. The rebar looks more like a tool! The quality is better than the sidekick& wingman,better built.
Blue Gear I don't think I made a video specifically about my experience with the Rebar, but you have a good memory! Even my Leatherman Wave has rusted a little bit, and I have been careful with it. Don't know if I've just been unlucky or what, but I basically have just accepted it, and just try to be more careful in general. I think your logic about the Rebar makes sense, people are scared of everything!

I keep a ST300 in my truck, way to big and heavey for carry. I also love my rebar, but wish it has some scissors, if it did it may replace my S2 juice for in town carry. When in the woods I like the ones with no external tools, helps keep dirt and grit out. At work I run a Blast model, has everything a woodsman?chainsaw operator needs...namely those nice long shanks on the drivers to reach carb and oil adjustments. Coworkers always tell me the wave is the best...but for what? I believe multi tools are just as personal to specific duties as blades are. nice vid.

As a outdoorsman i think the awl is a must if for nothing more than boring holes in timber and maybe punching holes in a skull in self defence situations 🤔

They are not riveted together. They are basically a Chicago screw. They actually make a tool set that makes it easier to get apart. I have the super tool 300, and it is my favorite tool that I own.

I know this video is older, but I'd like to mention a few things about the Supertool 300. First, my supertool loosened up enough after somenuse that it was at least one handed open. Second, the smaller flathead chipped on me with very little use. Third, the awl head has a curled sharp bottom edge that is a remarkable scraper. Overall,.great tool and I lost it last year after moving. I carry a smaller multitool in my pocket, and the supertool lives in my door panel unless it rides in my kydex belt sheath. The bit kit really opens up the capability
My leatherman wave fits my gerber leather sheath perfectly.
I have a Rebar, Wave+ and Free P4. The Rebar is my EDC when I'm not at work, my Wave is my work multi tool, and my Free is my spare. I prefer the Rebar over the Super Tool because my hands are not Super Tool sized.
To prevent rust I keep my tools clean and dry. I apply penetrating oil PB Blaster from time to time as needed.
im having a knifless rebar now and i like it even tho i dont use it very much because of age i still really love it for school or free time

Idk I was using a charge tti at work and it's been getting wrecked lately on steel core tracing wire. So I switched to the super tool. It rusted today in the pouch. Granted we where working on putting a gas main threw a creek that should be considered a small river.

I think you can´t blame Leatherman for the file rusting if you got it wet. I had that too on my Leatherman Supertool. I think that´s normal for a file to rust quick if it gets wet and you can´t dry it immediately. That´s probably even a sign for quality. Best way to clean files is a file card. A very thin coat of fine oil wouldn´t hurt either.
I like the Rebar but handles are too flimsy for my tastes. I'm upgrading to the ST300 and keeping the Rebar for weekend carry
Just use a wire grill brush to clean the file. It will take any rust out too. Then coat it with any oil
10:22 It's more of a Reamer than an Awl. I own a CRKT Hissatsu that is supposed to be ambidextrous, but the reversible clip wouldn't fit in the opposite insert because the hole was too small. I used the Reamer on my Rebar to open the hole up uniformly. An Awl is supposed to be a pointed punch, which the tool on the Rebar isn't. In fact both the Rebar and Supertool could benefit greatly from a 1/16" punch. rather than a second knife.
carry a rebar for work but considering a ST300 now. replaced my edc wave with a surge for the blade exchanger and replaceable wire cutters. now I'm used to the size and weight of a surge so. might get the rebar's big brother.

We are talking ounces here, if you have carried knives and tools weight is just part of the package, personally i like something i can feel and know it is there i have the Rebar and am getting the black oxide Supertool
The ST300 is MUCH MUCH closer to a REAL tool. I am not big at all. Leatherman make very fine product and I love my ST300. I use it quite often that I remember how the lock actually work, not like this guy in the video. However, any tool of the Leatherman can only perform at about 70% of any real tool. I own most of the tool in the ST300: saw, screwdriver, plier, can opener, file, wire-stripper, etc. The plier may be an exception. For anyone, I recommend real tools, single purpose tools. The Leatherman that is closest to real tool is ST300 so I would recommend that over any other Leatherman. It locks well, it's sturdy, stable and can exert lot of power. That will make the different between productivity and frustration.

Missing scissors doesn't have to be a big deal. You can buy a Leatherman Micra on ebay for $9.87 + free shipping and get a great scissors and a tweezers along with an extra knife and some screwdrivers.
I have the super tool 300 and love it I personally like the fact that it’s a robust tool. Also I feel they should do away with the awl and replace it with scissors on the 300. Honestly if I need an awl for a task then I’ll us my SAK since it’s more nimble in the hand.

Use a file card to remove metal or wood. Most hardware stores ought to have them, use one any time you use a file and you'll never need to use water or oil to clean it out !
Even a dry toothbrush will do

Kind of disagree to the point of chosing internal style. This is not a consideration of trusting or not. Think about it, external and internal is a relative concept. Those external tools will become internal when the pliers are engaged. Consider the situation that you need to use knife and pliers simultaneously which I encounter all the time, all the convenience brought by the external tools will become a big hassle. I owned a Rebar, a Wingman, a Surge and a Skeletool Cx. I always reach for the Rebar and I am now considering adding a Supertool.
Iv never had any rust problems sith any knife iv ever owned or multitool...
Properly use the tools, oil them correctly, don't put them away in a drawer or closet wet...pretty simple stuff
Those who choose the ST 300 are people who use their Multi tool for work, I'm a Millwright I work in a steelmill. Anything less than an HD multi-tool just falls short

My Letherman wave was rendered useless inn the pliers department after its first use. Went to remove a nut, wasn't particularly rusty or stuck just put a little pressure and the pliers jaws twisted and now can't grip properly. The blade had quite a bit of wiggle side to side and any adjustment would make it quite difficult to open. I still use it for the bit kit it came with but just ordered the supertool 300 to have a more reliable pair of pliers which is what i like it for the most
You can warranty your wave.
i dont think the file would be stainless steel, so water would rust it. notice its a different color, not shiny. also they are not riveted. do some research, friend
I chose a Rebar over a Wave or Surge due to the slim carry and I always have a separate pocket knife so the external accessible blade isn't a necessity. Plus I don't like how the backs of the two external blades on a Wave/Surge can meet when the pliers are out and pinch the fire out of the user.
I thought it's just about super tool 300 vs rebar..? Video couldn't have been this long had you just reviewed or compared only the two without the showoff of other models.

He didn't mention if he had used the file to do any work. If he washed the file with tap water and standard metal shavings are trapped in the file teeth. The trapped metal that wasn't removed with a brass wire brush is going to rust. Which will I turn cause corrosion on the file that might not occur if you clean it properly to begin with. Treating the Rebar like it's a dirty dish is not a good idea. Dry it out promptly. Not that I have had any rust issues with my Rebar. I clean it all the time with hot tap water and dawn dish soap. Compressed air to dry it out makes all the difference.
I think the removable wire cutters only came into existence because of hipsters and innovation. Leatherman wants to stay one step ahead of the competition and keep their patents, the hipsters were crying for replaceable wire cutters. Haven't seen or met a single electrician that uses, let alone owns, a leatherman.
I absolutely hate external parts on multitools. Multitools are meant to be compact, single-piece, complex instruments. External parts belong to dedicated tools. I grew up on the SOG Power Plier in those good old times that SOGs used to be produced in the USA and were top in quality.
That's why I love the Rebar. Supertool 300 is a great multitool, too, but it's somewhat too large and heavy for everyday carrying. Nonetheless, either is nowhere near as good as the SOG PowePlier, since the Leatherman multitools lack the chisel and scalpel, unlike the PowerPlier.
Leatherman Charge/Wave (Plus) are shit, they're very poor in functions, they don't even have an awl, and need tons of external parts/bits.

maybe you filed iron that made your file rusty after washing. You shouldn't have cleaned it with water after fileing something that isnt stainless.

I don"t like your review. You haven't even noticed that the Super Tool 300 has one more flat screwdriver. The awl is an excellent tool as you can drill holes with it and sew tents - and no, you can't substitute it with a knife, since that would ruin your knife. Scissors belong in manicures, not in multitools - most scissor jobs can also be done with a knife.
I cannot figure out why you keep saying the smaller tool would be much easier to carry. It is lighter, which means it takes a little less energy to carry, but not enough to notice. Other than that, it is in no way any easier to carry.
You failed to even mention the wire stripper on the can opener. You are wrong about the strictly two-handed opening, as well. Out of the package they are, but with A) oil at the pivot points, B) some concentrated breaking in iterations of opening the tool, and C) slight loosening of the pivot points if needed, you can extract your tool form its sheath, pinch the two handles apart, and flip the tool open with one hand. I can do that with my PST, Wave, and Super Tool. They are NOT riveted at the pivot points.
Clearly, you and I come at these tools from drastically different points of view. You think the ST tools are "a little bit longer"; I think they are significantly longer. You think the extra size is a negative attribute; I think it is positive. I think the tiny scissors that come on multi-tools are of barely any use. (For example, I am much more likely to use the knife point of the Wave to "clip" a coupon from the grocery circular than the scissors because it is as adequate, much faster and far less cumbersome.)
Given your unfamiliarity with the ST and the Rebar (you had to check the other side of the file to be sure it, too was a file), I don't think you were the best person to be posting this particular comparison on RUclips. Your 'review' of the tools was perfunctory and incomplete. By the way, those are not flathead screwdrivers; they are slot head screwdrivers. They will work in any slot head screw whether flat-headed or not.
420HC is typically less rust resistant, you have to dry it off with a rag/towel or it will rust
Why would you have to live with it if you damage the wire cutters? Leatherman will fix them for 25 years.
Eric Beggs yes, leatherman does have a good warrantee, but the hardened cutters are WAY tougher and if the mess up, you can fix them without shipping anything. The standard cutters WILL roll and make the pliers stick shut and you WILL have to ship them off to be fixed.... best to just avoid the pain in the ass IMHO
Don't clean tools with water - use things like gasoline, diesel, kerosene or WD40 .

Extra-size is good for people who use the the tools for real work, rather than pretend survival while ducking and dodging squirrels in the woods. Rental maintenance needs abuse-proof tools, and the tool belt, heavy as it is benefits from reducing several tools down to fewer. If you can't hammer on it, or use it as a hammer, it's not a real tool.

You sound like a guy who is new to multi tools, and unfamiliar with these two models. Your opinion here in not valid and totally worthless. your wrong you can take apart a Leatherman there knurled screws the plier head is a just circular pins but the tool side has to flat sides so the body wont move, you can only turn the screw pin on the tool end, you can customise the Leatherman just remember to put a bit of lock tight back on the pins when you screw them back up
