Get ready to be blown away by James Toney's incredible career! James Nathaniel Toney (born August 24, 1968) is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1988 to 2017. He held world championships in three weight classes, including the IBF and lineal middleweight titles from 1991 to 1993, the IBF super-middleweight title from 1993 to 1994, and the IBF cruiserweight title in 2003. Toney was also challenged twice for a world heavyweight title in 2005 and 2006 and was victorious the first time but was later stripped due to a failed drug test. Overall, he competed in fifteen world title fights across four weight classes. Stylistically a defensive boxer, Toney utilized the shoulder roll technique taught him by veteran trainer Bill Miller, who had once trained heavyweight champion, Ezzard Charles. Toney was an exceptional counterpuncher and inside fighter who often preferred to fight off the ropes. He possessed fast hand speed and good punching power throughout his career and is also noted for his toughness, having never lost any of his 92 professional bouts via stoppage. In 1991 and 2003, Toney was voted Fighter of the Year by The Ring magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America. In 2011, The Ring magazine ranked him a tenth of the "10 best middleweight titleholders of the last 50 years."[2] He has also made a one-time appearance in mixed martial arts, losing to Randy Couture at UFC 118. In 2001, Toney played the role of Joe Frazier in the movie Ali alongside Will Smith. Toney is well known for his "Old School" or "Throwback" style of fighting, consisting of his head and shoulder rolls (used to avoid punches), his ability to fight off the ropes, his slick body movements, and his infighting

Toney - soulsapping defense. good setting opponents up for his money punches. above average punching accuracy. tier 1 footwork. could box inside or outside. off the rope or backing up. stalk or swarm. knack for which counters to use against each opponent. very patient fighter in the sense that we say about football running backs allowing the offensive line and fullback get to their blocks but once the hole opens hits 'em hard & fast. he could wait to catch a mistake then brutally punish you, also kept his punch output down which supplements his stamina for second half of bouts. one of the best with ring manipulation and generalship. he never ran from opponents and fights fans wanted to see. could hit you from a plethora from angles something we marvel at Lomachenko for today. decent power, solid chin.

The knockout against Nunn should of been a DQ he clearly hit him directly in the back of his head 2:14 then blatantly shoves the ref out of the way at 2:16 to get to him again that's a CLEAR as day DQ .🤦🏽‍♂️

Roy kicked his ass!???.... And you’re point is what exactly? No point explaining to you why Toney looked stiff and awkward, because you’ll say I’m making excuses for Toney losing and Roy kicking his ass! Greatest advice I’ve ever heard in boxing is “The mind and body are inseparable!” ... Duran fought Leonard TWICE in 1980... First time the mind and body were one, and both mentally and physically Duran was in shape, and looked what he did to Sugar Ray Leonard. Six months later he looked like he’d NEVER boxed before and gave-up ‘No mas’ etc... Look at Anthony Joshua against Klitscho, and that same man looked like an amateur against Ruiz. James Toney was not mentally in shape for Jones, but as I said, you’ll just say it’s excuses. Kicked his ass??? Fair enough. Just tell us why Roy, if it was so easy, and knew he had the better of Toney, tell us why he refused a rematch and of course a huge payday in fighting Toney again... And why did Roy avoid James Toney for the rest of his career, reluctant to face Toney in any weight division? Leonard knew the only way he could beat Duran was if Duran was not fit both mentally and physically, and Jones knew he was fortunate fighting Toney when James was struggling. Anyway, at least Toney can say, fair enough, I lost to one of the GOAT and definitely one of the quickest fighters ever. I doubt Roy likes to gloat about when he lost fair-and-square against Glen Johnson and Antonio Tarver etc... Knocked spark out!!! ... Toney was NEVER STOPPED and NEVER KNOCKED OUT... in 90 + fights. The only thing great about Roy was his speed. Seriously, try to talk about Roy’s boxing greatness without talking about his speed and quickness. You can’t. Once he couldn’t overwhelm his opponents with his confusing speed, and he had lost that superior advantage, what did he have that was superior to his opponent?? Knock out Power? A granite chin? Heart and Spirit? Body punching superiority? Defensive slickness? Offensive aggression and desire? Seriously, WHAT was great about Roy Jones Jr excluding his speed?? Answer: FUCK ALL. Reminds me of Sugar Ray Leonard. Willing to fight ‘anyone ‘ as long as he knows he can beat them. Leonard fan-boys cuss Duran for not having balls etc... Duran fought Hagler in ‘83... Leonard ran and ran until he knew Hagler had lost it, finally SRL fought him in ‘87... FOUR Years after the ‘quitter’ Duran!!! Roy Jones avoided Toney, refusing offers to fight at HW... imagine the Payday.
If Roy is better than Toney, in your eyes, simply because he beat Toney on the night, then Tarver and Glen Johnson are forever greater than Roy Jones Jr... because they both KICKED Roy’s ASS!

But James Toney just schooled Holyfield like he never boxed before.

@@hamidious Of course he did b/c Holyfield was like 40🤷🏾‍♂️. Toney had better quality knockouts against younger and better fighters than this one. It’s a terrible choice for #1 imo.

@@natetaylor7823 in all of Holyfield’s fights never did I see someone ever toy with him the way James toney did.
James toney made boxing look beautiful with the way he implemented the Philly shell, he absolutely dismantled Holyfield, I understand that he was old but the way toney did it I don’t think it would have mattered if Holyfield was in his prime or not, stylistically it was just a bad match up. James toney was tailor made to beat Holyfield.
