K5 is currently on sale for $99 on amazon and a few other woodworker supplies. I bought the K4 Master kit $109 at my local big box store today and will return it in favor of this. Thank you so much for the GREAT video. Simple, no BS and very informative. +1 subscriber, glad to have been recommended this video.
The new 520 and 720 have been announced! As soon as I can get my hands on a 720 here in Australia I'll re-do this video comparing it to the K5... it looks awesome! 😄
I bought the K5 a number of yrs ago. There was no master system then but I still like it. I did the mounting on a piece of plywood which hangs behind the door. Have developed a little problem with the drill block slipping so if you're not careful you end up with a missed drilled hole. Having recently seen the Armour tools system it looks like a much simpler system but it's forking out dough for something I already have.
My mate Sumo tested the Armor System and liked it. The Auto-Thickness detector seems like the next step in pocket hole tech... I wonder if the "K6" will do something similar 😂 Will be interesting to see if it takes off in Australia, only Timbecon stock it I think.
I'm someone who bought a K4 after first owning a K5. I did so not because I didn't like my K5. On the contrary I like my K5 very much. I bought a K4 after a K5 because I have doubts about the longevity of the K5's ratcheting locking mechanism. Yesterday, upon learning that Kreg has discontinued both the K5 and the K4, I hurriedly went to Amazon to snap up a K4 as a backup to my K5 in case my K5's mechanism ever breaks. Mostly I use my Kreg jigs with the HD guide block to drill holes for HD screws on 2x lumber for outdoor stuffs. I figured that if my discontinued K5 ever died, my HD drill guide block would be useless. That's why I bought the K4 as a highly durable backup to the K5.
I gave my K4 on permanent loan to a friend once I got the K5. I'm excited to get my hands on the new 720 but we'll have to wait a little while yet here in Australia, hopefully by the end of the month. Will be very interesting to test it out and compare it to the K5!
Welcome Dave, your countrymen really lead the way in the re-emergence of the hobby bringing it back to popularity, particularly via RUclips. Really inspired me to give this video thing a go 😊
This was a fantastic comparison and instruction on the pocket hole jigs, James. Thanks for the thorough review, it was just the kind of information I was looking for!
@@FixitFingers Absolutely. Before your video I thought K4 would be just fine; now I think K5 is far better. Also I like the commentary on the "Master" edition. Again, huge props. Have subscribed (and liked)!
It's worth the little extra Susan and I did find a really good use for that little stop block on my last project when you are trying to pocket hole mitred pieces. Once you learn to set the ratchet clamp quickly (only takes a little practice) it'll be super fast for you. Enjoy! Hit me up if you have any issues I'll see if I can help.
Cheers Papa! I've taken a look at a few bits of Kreg Gear as I generally like their design. I will hopefully find time to do a similar video to this on the Rip-Cut vs Accu-cut in the near future. 👍

Absolutely a terrific review mate, seeing both systems next to each other is critical, my K4 has been my first Joinery system jig & I’m wrapped I got it, never got the K5 but was given the Armor Tool one which eliminates other set up processes the K5 has & I think it is like you said another progression in development, top video 🍻👍👍👍🇦🇺

Yep still my choice. With many holes to drill and probably on some large panels with a wardrobe, you'll save the extra money in time and frustration on that one project. Good luck! I've made wardrobe doors, but not a whole unit. Let me know how you go 👍
Awesome. I love my new 720. K5 and K4 still available here in Australia, but when they are gone they are gone. The auto-clamp adjustment is awesome. Only thing I miss from the K5 is the removable block for portable work, but there are also new options for that ;) Good luck!

G'day Hammet, yes it made it's way to a fellow Aussie RUclipsr, Vic @ Downunder Woodworks. Kreg gear is pricey here too... nearly as bad as what Australia Post charges to send stickers overseas 🤣
I think it might be hard to buy a K5. I've been told that model is out of production now...sadly. I borrowed a 720, but not impressed by it. The K5 got it right.
Yes both of these models are out of production now. A few retailers may have old stock and they can be found second hand. The K5 was very good, though I've found over the past 12 months with both the K5 and 720 in the shop, I've been reaching for the 720. I just gave my K5 away to a young lad.
Yes, Kreg is not the cheapest gear. There are alternative pocket hole brands and cheaper versions of these jigs. Check out the Kreg 300 series, very basic, but cheap and do the same job.
Ha! I'm sure they will be back soon. I wish Amazon Australia had as good range but we are such a small market I guess it's hard to compete. Luckily my local woodworking store stocks the full range... I'm just lazy and like online ;)
My krieg 5 clamping system already broke. The plastic is cheap on the clampdown system. A lot of people have experienced the same problem.as.mine had. Lucky I had my.old 3 to finish my.pocket.holes on my.project. don't buy the 5' it's garbage and.it's.been cheaped down
I hope the engineers and design team at Kreg get paid well. The designs they come up with to make woodworking easier is incredible.
I reckon they would. They moved into a very cool looking new facility the other year...it's like a woodworking Google campus 😁

I use the kreg mini & it does my head in when doing lots of pocket holes. Takes so long to set up everytime. I do love pocket holes though.

Cheers Vic, I spent years in Science Communication presenting to students so I've had a bit of practice ;) Yep! As I was lucky to win the K5 the K4 is going free to a good home. I have a mate interested, if he doesn't want it I'm open to offers and appeals. 😊
Fixit Fingers No worries mate. Let me know if your mate doesn’t want it.
Good vid! Australian Forrest Griffin. :)
Hahaha I had to Google who that was... There is certainly a resemblance there, I wish I was that ripped though 😂 💪
Has your K4 found a new home yet, please consider sending it to South Africa. I'm new in Diy and it is criminal how expensive the K4 is over here.
G'day Hammet, yes it made it's way to a fellow Aussie RUclipsr, Vic @ Downunder Woodworks. Kreg gear is pricey here too... nearly as bad as what Australia Post charges to send stickers overseas 🤣
Great review, very helpful information, and excellent presentation. Thank you.
Thanks for watching Ed, glad it was of assistance. - James
Thanks god bless
Always welcome John, glad it was helpful - James
I think it might be hard to buy a K5. I've been told that model is out of production now...sadly. I borrowed a 720, but not impressed by it. The K5 got it right.
Yes both of these models are out of production now. A few retailers may have old stock and they can be found second hand. The K5 was very good, though I've found over the past 12 months with both the K5 and 720 in the shop, I've been reaching for the 720. I just gave my K5 away to a young lad.
Great fixtures, functional! I think to buy myself, but so far it's expensive. Maybe on Aliexpress 😁
Yes, Kreg is not the cheapest gear. There are alternative pocket hole brands and cheaper versions of these jigs. Check out the Kreg 300 series, very basic, but cheap and do the same job.
@@FixitFingers Thanks.
Your video must have worked - the K5 is sold out on Amazon today
Ha! I'm sure they will be back soon. I wish Amazon Australia had as good range but we are such a small market I guess it's hard to compete. Luckily my local woodworking store stocks the full range... I'm just lazy and like online ;)
Nice Job on Video. You missed your calling.
Hard to make a living of woodwork or RUclips, but thanks for the confidence! Both make excellent hobbies though 😀
Make sure your lens is clean before recording.
Oops! Gets a bit dusty in the shop. I'll keep an eye out 😅
My krieg 5 clamping system already broke. The plastic is cheap on the clampdown system. A lot of people have experienced the same problem.as.mine had. Lucky I had my.old 3 to finish my.pocket.holes on my.project. don't buy the 5' it's garbage and.it's.been cheaped down
No issues on mine after a year of heavy use. The ratchet on my K5 is metal. Where did yours crack?
