I’m a tool watch guy, and I value indicators that serve useful purposes, and a power reserve is very useful. I’d also like to see longer power reserves. 72 hours should be a minimum.

I think you nailed it, Jory - on the dial they're polarizing, but on the back ... Yeah, baby!

in my opinion ... handwind watches need a power reserve gauge more than an auto😉

I have a hand wound Grand Seiko reference. The seconds subdial is at nine o’clock and a retrograde style power reserve indicator is at three o’clock. There are no other complications so the dial has both space and balance. I personally enjoy the powevreeeve and find it useful on a hand winder so that I don’t have to guess. I have hand wound Panerai and Habrin2 watches without power reserve indicators and I have to guess when it needs to be wound up. Since I rotate my watches almost daily, these are not big deals. But if I am wearing a hand wound watch several days in a row such as when it is the only watch I have brought on a trip, i miss not having a power reserve. Less complications and more power reserve indicators!

I really like having power reserve meters on my mechanical watches, but I also like having it on some of my solar quartz watches (Citizen Eco-drive and Casio). The quartz watch where it is most useful is on my Seiko Kinetic. Almost all of my Orients have a power reserve meters, but the one where it is most useful is my Arena, which is my only automatic without hand-winding. Ironically, by putting the power reserve on the back of the Credor, you can also view the exposed main spring, which gives you the same information.

Love the power reserve on the back with open case back on manual winds. Very cool. Dornblueth and Sohn has a power reserve where the 12 on the dial goes from red to white. Cool German watches.

My orient Monarch is just perfection. Manual wind and power reserve indicator. No date window. It's a perfect watch. Beautiful numbers on the dial the second and minute hand reach the end of the watch just right for clear legibility.

They need to make a watch with a hidden date window so the dial looks clean. Push a button and the date window opens behind the 3 indice. Push it again and the window closes over and you're back to the clean dial look.

That Zodiac is a sweet piece even if it is probably kind of teeny. I could see myself going for it if it's still around after the holidays. So definitely not on Friday. Anyway, another entertaining show this morning.

I have a Seiko kinetic which has the power reserve scale printed down the right hand side of the dial and uses a pusher at the 2o’clock to change the second hand to a power reserve indicator very discreet 😁 I also have a Dugena M tech with power reserve proving that even affordable watches can have them.
Keep up the good work but please no more talk of bagels I’m on a diet😂

My first automatic is a Timex that I still have now and it has a power reserve indicator. So when I got an Invicta automatic that didn't have it I thought it sucked a little bit, but I just sucked it up because many if not most automatics don't have power indicators anyway. And yeah, they're cool but sometimes they're placed in the most awkward places on the dial, like in the Grand Seiko, for example. It just looks so awkward and out of place.

I’d like one watch with a power reserve indicator... I’m leaning towards the Orient Triton $323 or the Orient Star diver (Helm)... $498. When I look at it like that the Triton looks a lot better.

I like power reserve indicators, though, only currently have them on a couple solar watches I have. Still, I'd especially like it on an automatic as, while handwind only movements has a max number of turns you can quickly top off, an automatic on deck to wear later could be at any level and still turn, so now I'm doubting myself. Was that enough, was it too much and I was simply wasting time... I don't know because it doesn't have a power indicator, lol
I do have a watch winder, btw, but occasionally switch to one that's not currently in it on the fly and that's when I have to hope it's wound up enough to properly keep time.

Is it normal for the power reserve indicator to lose power even when it's on the watch winder? Does the main spring want to stabilize to the halfway mark? I just got the Frederque Constant Big Date Power Reserve watch, and it seems to be losing power even on the winder. Is this normal?

I would love to see a power reserve that sits by the side of the crown somehow. Stealthier than it would be if it was on the dial and more easily accessible than it is on the caseback.

Jory, we've been down this road before! It's not pronounced tutor it's pronounce tutor! For the Love of pronunciation can you not get it right? On a serious note I love the power reserve on my Orient Triton / Neptune although I wish you was at the 12 o clock instead of the 1 o clock position on the dial. Thank you for another great video.

Nothing cheapens up a watch face like a power reserve indicator. I look at it in the same way as over branding.
Power reserve in general is a pointless marketing ploy. Average guy who goes out here baas a watch and gets into watches is gonna in all honesty where 2 or 3 watches all the time. The rest of his collection will be worn on special occasion Zoe or just when the mood hits. So the only power reserve that that individual is gonna need is an 8 to 10 hour power reserve when he takes it off at night. But you say "I don't like having to wind my watch and set the time and date".... Then you shouldn't be into watches cause that's just part of owning a watch. That's like the guy that says I just use my phone if I'm gonna time anything while hes wearing a Rolex Daytona. No, how about you use the actual chronograph it's on your watch??? I mean how cool is that but then again the guy that says that kind of thing isn't really watch guy.
People like what they like and I get that in our support that but people just need to quit BS ing and just be honest about things. It's a lot like the guys you always hear running off at the mails talking about how his Porsche GT2 RS Can go 6:40 around Nürburgring. And I always say the same thing, OK go over there and do it then. Thank guarantee that car will not go that fast around that track. I mean poor swing around dozens of times on a closed circuit while sitting around waiting for perfect conditions with a professional driver and they were able to get that time once.

I hate power reserve indicators. It drives my OCD crazy, as if checking the time constantly is not bad enough. I can understand its usefulness in handwind watches but automatics? Pointless. If you are not sure, just give it a few winds and forget about it.
