  • Going down towards the city center you cannot avoid visiting, even if only briefly, this small but graceful baroque church dedicated by the Carmelite nuns originally housed in the convent, to the Virgen do Carmo, the name with which they referred to the Virgin Mary. There is little and disparate information about the history of the Carmelite convent in Braga, which underwent multiple changes at the beginning of the 20th century, which significantly transformed the church's façade. The convent, which includes the cloister, is built around the church, the latter with a plan in the shape of a Latin cross, with a single nave, with a high choir, two pulpits and two side chapels. The crossing is covered by a dome and, in the transept, there are two other altars. The triumphal arch has a gilded pelmet and in the main chapel the altarpiece is recently made, modeled after the church of Bom Jesus do Monte. The church's facade was profoundly modified between 1908 and 1911. Not satisfied with the architectural refinement of this elevation, those responsible for the temple chose to commission the architect João de Moura Coutinho de Almeida e Eça to design a project to dignify the temple.
