      Australia is a pathetic country where citizens are treated like the property of the state. The wealth comes from shipping actual dirt to places with actual capabilities, our economic complexity is lower than many African nations. The government back doors every internet service and the docile cattle go along with it because they think it will stop pedophiles. One of the reasons that GPs recommending patients to lose weight / restrict calories gets called fatphobia is because often, that's the only thing they want to look at. I was ~90kg at 5'10" (for me, the upper end of a healthy range) and was told my knee problems would go away if I lost weight. I'm now 74kg and have more knee problems than ever because it was ignored for so long. After changing doctors, we figured out I have hypermobile-type Ehlers Danlos syndrome, which affects my connective tissue. I was *dislocating my knees*. I wasn't even clinically obese, so I can imagine how difficult it can be for others who weigh more or are shorter. The problem also seems to disproportionately affect women. It's not just a GP "doing their job". It's a lazy copout by a doctor who doesn't want to investigate anything more difficult than ordering a blood test.

  • @tyffanii1

    Okay, I just watched a video where a young girl in her early 20s was having pains eating and she went to her doctor and he said, that “would that be so bad?” When she said that she had lost some weight. It was later found by another doctor that she had colon cancer, she got surgery to remove it, but that first doctor that didn’t treat her because he thought she should loose some weight was totally uncalled for, she left the appointment crying, feeling hurt, unheard and unworthy. I think there should be a fine line between what a doctor can say and what they should keep to themselves, because we are going through our own health journey, and unless we bring it up that we are looking to loose weight, doctors shouldn’t mention it (unless it is also affecting the health condition you went in to get help for).

    As a thin person I think what I’ve come to understand about fatphobia in health care is that, similarly to women and POC, fat people are usually given lower quality healthcare bc of their size. Doctors will dismiss their concerns and basically chalk everything to their weight without any further assessment. It is malicious.

    • @mirandaerickson1766
      @mirandaerickson1766 Год назад +25

      Yeah exactly. As a person in healthcare, many providers will completely disregard overweight peoples’ health concerns, and blame any issues on their weight. People deserve adequate healthcare and their concerns to be heard despite their size.

I am not american and I already feel the debt

    • @SheenaMalfoy
      @SheenaMalfoy Год назад +4

      As a healthcare worker, it might not be "without further assessment" but "further assessment is impossible due to size." Xrays of obese people look like shit due to all the fat, and diagnoses are more difficult or outright impossible. Veins are difficult or impossible to access, resulting in delayed or non-existent bloodwork. They LITERALLY cannot fit into MRI machines, which forces CT tests in their place but CT doesn't have the same spatial resolution as MRI does, meaning smaller pathologies might get missed. Surgeries are more dangerous and have more complications when large amounts of unnecessary weight is involved, and/or may be pointless because the weight will undo whatever was done to fix the patient in the first place (esp. in othopedics).
      When we tell obese people to lose weight, we aren't trying to be mean about it. In some situations WE LITERALLY CAN'T HELP YOU until you help yourself.

    • @iffycould826
      @iffycould826 Год назад

      @@SheenaMalfoy this is literally bullshit lmfao. xrays see through your body and check mostly like your bones. you can still be obese and easily get bloodwork from a hand or the crease of the arm. MRI machines sizing maybe. but i hate to tell you obese does not only mean 400+lb individuals- someone weighing over about 180-250 is what the vast majority fit into, based often on old data that didn't often even account for gender or many heights. many patients with some extra weight actually do better post-surgery, and tend to live longer. there is a threshold to that yes, but the bar for being obese is nowhere near what people often think it is.
      as long as someone eats well and is active, that's more important than arbitrary numbers made up decades ago. numerous dieticians and people who look into weight loss science find out how much garbage science is out there, and how much science is ignored because it doesn't echo the pharmaceutical companies.
      people also think having thyroid or metabolic issues is rare, and it's really not. 1 out of 10 women have pcos, which often presents hormone issues and insulin resistance which often causes weight gain and is comorbid with thyroid issues. birth control pills cause weight gain. antipsychotics cause weight gain. mobility issues, chronic depression and fatigue.
      this is a systemic issue. food scarcity and food deserts often worse for impoverished americans and people of color, unwalkable US cities, forced dependence on cars, lack of lawmaking to ban the worst issues with commercial foods that are banned in the rest of the world and refusal to readdress our agricultural subsidy system.
      oftentimes people who can afford to go to medical school are wealthy and able-bodied. we know doctors can be sexist, can be racist, etc- it's time we address how some doctors also have prejudice based on a patient's weight, which is also oftentimes a symptom and not solely a cause of medical issues.

    • @cockathiel5319
      @cockathiel5319 Год назад +11

      @@SheenaMalfoy Those issues can happen with people on the extreme ends, but health problems being dismissed or overlooked is way more common than that. I have no issues fitting in an MRI machine and every phlebotomist who’s ever taken my blood has remarked about my “good veins,” and yet I’ve had doctors not even seem to consider looking further than my bmi when I bring up a health problem. Acting like the medical neglect that fat people experience is because we’re just too hard to treat or diagnose is at best naive, and at worst insulting.

    The bigger problem when it comes to healthcare with obesity, in my experience, is not so much outrage over my doctor's acknowledgement of my weight but the fact that is where the conversation often stops, even with almost (technically everything is interconnected, to some degree, even if only tangentially) *unrelated health problems* that would have been at least seriously considered long ago for someone at a healthy weight. Many practitioners will see an overweight patient as their BMI without consideration for acute issues that would not be scrutinized or assigned as "your fault for not doing enough" for other patients. Combine that with the capacity for the extra weight to compound some of these issues (congenital ones, chronic pain, the like) and suddenly you have self-reinforcing cycles where people get sucked in without effective recourse regardless of personal effort. It can quickly become a demoralizing situation that wreaks havoc on your mental health, among other things.
    To then see representation of someone even kind of like you considered inherently controversial for "promoting an unhealthy lifestyle" by virtue of existing feels like an extra kick in the face.

    The part of processed foods that doesn't get talked about enough is the amount of added sugars found in American foods. So much of what we buy has unnecessarily added sugar (often in the form of corn syrup) that you don't see in comparable foods throughout the rest of the world. A big part of this is due to corn subsidies in the US. Instead of propping up corn to the extent that our food manufacturers are putting corn syrup into everything, let's give more to fruit and vegetable farmers so that the prices of healthy foods come down to make it more affordable for everyone.

Especially when women are seeking medical care. Yes, weight - poor diet and exercise - can cause many health issues but patients often feel completely disregarded when they’re experiencing an issue unrelated to their weight and are unable to receive care until they lose the weight and prove it’s unrelated.

When I finally demanded an x-ray of my spine for the scoliosis that I had been diagnosed with before all the pain, the same doctor that ignored me for years looked at me and told me I was lucky I was able to walk with how twisted my spine was. I finally got recommended to a specialist and found out that my ribs were 5 to 10 years away from piercing my lungs. I had to have surgery that I am still struggling with recovery from that, had I been listened to in the first place, I may have never needed or if I did still need the spinal fusion, it could have been done when I was younger and better able to recover from. They'd come up with a new excuse every time she shut them down- it was ridiculous. They also ignored abnormal lab results and lie, saying they were all normal. I started getting sick at 10 but wasn't diagnosed with a pituitary until I was 17 and it was only because my mom wouldn't give up. When the tumor regrew it happened _all over again._

      Of course the main symptom was excessive daytime sleepiness no matter how much you try to sleep at night, which lead to me frequently falling asleep in class, minor bullying, teachers telling me I had so much potential if I would only bother to do the work (easier said than done if you fall asleep when trying to concentrate for any length of time) and me internalising the belief that I was lazy like people said. I'd become so convinced it was somehow a personal failing, that maybe I just wasn't trying to stay awake hard enough, I'd given up on the doctors completely. And if not there's also the internet and You could always learn what a tailor is for and have them make further adjustments to your clothing with the added plus of being able to add personalized touches and accents. I have no problem with doctors telling me they’re concerned about my weight or telling me it’s something I need to work on, what bothers me is when doctors act like my weight is the cause of my other health problems. They have existed no matter what weight I’ve been and acting like its the problem or the real cause does my treatments a disservice. Also things like BMIs were created around mens bodies and don’t consider things like breasts. Even at my skinniest, with breasts that fluctuate between an E and an F I’m always considered overweight/obese even when I’m really not.

Because of this, it's very hard and sometimes not possible to work out. Restricting calories too much will also make me ill, but it isn't possible to lose weight without restricting unhealthily. Being out of pain boosted my mental heath for a short time but the weight lost eventually brought me back to garbage mental health. What balanced me out was my neurologist backing me up with a solid plan to deal with the pain and an awesome therapist. Therapist not psychiatrist. The latter prescribed a medication and tanked my vitals and enraged all of the neurologists team, and my primary doctor. To summarize, not all doctors are the same if one won’t support your health goals, if they aren’t listening to your whole health picture-> GET A NEW DOCTOR. She hadn't even read my chart and it was THE VERY FIRST QUESTION SHE ASKED ME. I averaged 1000 calories per day of healthy foods. I was finally able to exercise, after 10 years of struggle and have made major improvement. We need to stop assuming that all fat people have control issues. I'd actually like to see a study that separates food sourced obesity will medical obesity. Needless to say, I didn't see that doctor again. Fresh food has to be prepared, working several jobs leaves little time for that. Not to mention exercise. After I’ve been on my feet for 12 hours, the last thing I want to do is go to the gym on top of that. But being on your feet 12hrs a day doesn’t count as exercise. You can still be fat. We need to actually improve the material conditions of the impoverished. But we not gone do that.
    3) Doctors actually do have an overwhelming problem with dismissing fat peoples problems as connected to their weight even when they aren’t.

America focused too much on poverty and feeding the poor. In doing so, we’ve made all these products that kill us slowly. The fact that they taste so good and satisfy our hunger so well is scary and what makes these food dangerous. People, especially in a country where people are able to get comfort foods instead of only what you need, tend to go to food to please the problems they have in life even if they don’t notice it. I’m malnourished (self diagnosed) and I can’t eat a full 4 category meal with meat starch and veggie, but I can sit here on yt, with a whole family bag of Fritos, and straight up destroy it. We should have local growers and small farmers revive local farmers markets and inspire state law makers to make food stamps available in those places and we should advertise local small growers instead of industrialized factory farms. The only way I got into the ‘healthy’ range was when I had an eating disorder. After getting my ED in check, it was back to the same issue with doctors. I once had my doctor looking at my papers - not at me - and say I was a bit overweight. It wasn’t until she looked up at me that she stopped and looked a little confused. It’s incredibly frustrating (and triggering for my ED) when I’m healthy in every other sense but this stupid outdated chart is sometimes the only thing doctors go by and the only way I was considered ‘healthy’ was when I was starving myself. So yeah, that’s why some folks have issues with doctors when it comes to that.

    A factor that gets left out of the nutrition/food/diet discussion is that fresh produce and more nutrient dense foods take TIME and EFFORT to prepare. I have ADHD and part of that is I literally forget about food I have in the fridge. My crisper drawer is where fresh produce goes to die. It's easy to say eat more fresh produce, it's harder to follow through. I've been able to adapt with meal services but it's not cheap. When you don't have money or time, fast and low quality can be the only option.
    Any sort of medically necessary diet restrictions only make it worse. I was looking into pre-made vegetable juice as a way to increase my intake and I discovered that all of them use apples or pineapple. Apples are a huge IBS trigger for me and I'm allergic to pineapple. Tomato based juice triggers my geographic tongue and acid reflux. Eating is HARD. I'm looking into how to make my own but I can't find my blender because ADHD memory wipe. I just want people to acknowledge that it's not always easy or simple to eat more nutritiously.

      @@littlebigcommentaries9833 fine, those cans can be affordable. What about having a kitchen with appliances to cook? Or even be able to afford time to plan and cook meals when you are working two or three jobs? There's layers to this shit lol. Not everyone is lazy, if it was that, we wouldn't have such a high rate of obesity.

      @@clockworktime7195 the problem is that theres a lot of people who do have all that and still choose to have that lifestyle. Which is basically what Phil is addressing, that is a US problem and a big one. I also don't think the affordability is the biggest issue in cities,more the lack of. I live in more in the country side and whenever I go to NY to visit family, I notice how hard it is to find fresh decent food, it ridiculous.

    I appreciate Nevada's AG for not giving these crazy Republicans a platform to speak.

    YES! PLEASE KEEP DOING THESE CANIDATE INTERVIEWS. Having sharable bits of info leading up to the election is going to be so important.

    The thing about weight stigma with doctors is that, too often, fat people go to the doctor for a health issue and that issue is immediately met with "well, lose weight" instead of the actual root/cause of the health issue being addressed. Yes, I think there is merit in practicing gentle nutrition and making sure your body is nourished. But if I go to the doctor, I expect a conversation that goes beyond my weight. Everyone deserves that.
