  • Filmed at Efteling in 1978 "Wuthering Heights" is a song by singer-songwriter Kate Bush, released as her debut single on the 20th of January 1978. Inspired by the 1847 Emily Brontë novel of the same name, it appears on her 1978 debut album The Kick Inside. It stayed at number one on the UK Singles Chart for four weeks, and remains Bush's most successful single. The song received widespread critical acclaim and continues to be highly regarded; in 2016, Pitchfork named it the fifth-greatest song of the 1970s

There’s 4 different versions of basically the same video in which Kate performs this song and dance with those crazy and unsettling facial expressions, the only difference being the settings: a golden mist in a dark void, the wilderness under an overcast sky, a literal haunted house, and a small fairytale movie set with extreme closeups of Kate’s face. Each of these represent a different space Kate’s ghost character might inhabit: the traditional “heaven” surrounded by darkness, the fields she walked in her lifetime, the manor house in which she once lived, and the tiny fairytale world that is her reality. Kate’s dance alternates between flowy interpretive dance of the lyrics and motions commonly ascribed to the undead and/or the blind. Her facial expressions go beyond exaggeration into what seems like possession by a spirit whose sole remaining urge is to chase her old lover and make him one with her. Her makeup, specifically that around her eyes, gives her gaze an uncanny and disturbing affect that transforms her into something monstrous and inhuman, which is fitting for a character who inflicts so much pain and grief on those around her. Overall these videos are profoundly beautiful and unsettling despite their simplicity and will likely haunt the viewer the way Cathy’s ghost haunted Heathcliff in the novel “Wuthering Heights,” the song’s namesake.

The original UK version had a disturbing otherworldly vibe that left a lot to the listener/viewer's imagination.
However can't deny how utterly unique and original this song is.....Kate's vocals, high shrill pitch, expressions and dance choreography are just on another level.

This is still a masterpiece of art, imo, for many different reasons...
Kate Bush had started her dancing classes with Lindsay Kemp, in 1976, and I can see the influences of his teaching and her *learning*, with those floating steps and movements in this video...
I interviewed Kate Bush several times, and she told me about her dancing classes because I had said that her moves were amazing. Strangely enough, while looking at her biography on Wikipedia, there is no reference to her dancing and who inspired her. Therefore, I am lucky to have been able to ask the right questions, and get some private thoughts, in those days.
What a voice! she started writing songs when she was 11...
*Wuthering Heights* (I think Kate was just 19 in this video)🤔

@@SBPau2024 She was exhausted after the Lionheart Tour ( no one called it The Tour Of Life then) and she kind of knew that to top it was going to be really difficult and hugely expensive. There were three 40 ft trucks on that tour, not a lot today, but in 1979 for a non-arena band almost unheard of. Many of the gigs had to have their stages extended by a team of scaffolders. And as Melody Fox correctly says, she was devastated by the death of Bill Duffield her LD at Poole Arts centre. I worked in that tour and it was a massive undertaking, I don't' blame her for deciding she wanted to focus on the studio, I think she did think that she would eventually tour again but the moment passed and it never happened until the Hammersmith shows and tellingly they were all in one place.

That reminds me…I was 8 at the time this song came out. Heard it on the radio and thought who was the weirdo with the banshee voice? 😆 I didn’t like it at the time, well I was 8, what did I know? But then Running Up That Hill was released in ‘85 with that haunting drum loop first hooking me. Purchased the Hounds Of Love album it came from, loved it. And have been a Kate Bush fan ever since. Regularly listening to all her albums from that late 70s to late 80s period. I’ve got to give The Red Shoes (from the early 90s) another try too. It just didn’t do it for me at the time. Also the very few albums she released in the naughties didn’t do it for me either. They’re not as good as her earlier music from that classic 70s/80s era unfortunately. But that’s just me. Maybe there are others who loved them. I was lucky enough to see her perform live back in 2014 though.

Note, this precedes Thriller. It amazes me that Kate Bush is so much more than a singer, a musician, a composer, producer etc. This song was never just a song in her mind. It was/is a full theatrical, aidio-visual experience. The way she alters her voice, the musical arrangement, the stage setting, her facial expressions, the way she moves & dances all are a part of the whole. I think Kate Bush needs to write a Broadway show. I would be there in a second!

This is the one where they have a atraction in the nettherlands the efteling, hounted mansion she was there for thge special opening it was on TV here :D
On 12 May 1978, the Dutch broadcaster TROS broadcast a 20 minute Kate Bush television special, recorded at the Dutch amusement park Efteling. On 10 May 1978, Efteling was ready to open the Haunted Castle, the most expensive attraction it had ever constructed, and they wanted to promote it as much as they could. Ton van der Ven, who designed the castle, appeared in a popular talk show and in April a documentary featuring the Haunted Castle was made by filmmaker Rien van Wijk, who was eager to shoot in the latest attraction before it officially opened. Kate, who just had a big hit with Wuthering Heights, was approached for a television special that would promote both Efteling and her songs. The special was filmed in April, a month before the official opening of the castle.
    The Efteling TV Special songs:
    • "Moving" was filmed in the square in front of the Haunted Castle
    • "Wuthering heights"; Kate can be seen inside the Haunted Castle. Among other things, a smoke machine was used.
    • "Them heavy people" was filmed at 3 locations; in the attic of the castle, at the entrance with the oriental spirit and outside in front of the entrance of the well that is part of the attraction 'The Indian water lilies'.
    • "The man with the child in his eyes" was filmed by the lake with gondolettes and swans
    • Strange Phenomena, has the double shot with the mirror image and was filmed in the castle's catacombs.
    • "The Kick Inside". Kate has gray hair in this shot and is lying in a boat surrounded by flowers on the lake and sailing away. This scene conjures up images of Elaine and The Lady of Shalott, classic poetic figures from the Arthurian legend.
Catherine Bush CBE (born 30 July 1958) is an English singer, songwriter, and producer. She came to prominence in 1978, aged 19, when she topped the UK Singles Chart for four weeks with her debut single "Wuthering Heights", becoming the first female artist to achieve a UK number one with a self-written song. She has since released 25 UK Top 40 singles, including the top-10 hits "The Man with the Child in His Eyes", "Babooshka", "Running Up That Hill".

Kate Bush is a creative genius and a beautiful soul. I was too young to appreciate her music when it first came out, but I got into it a couple of years ago. I'm so glad a new generation is discovering her music, and she's having ever more success. This song in particular sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it. In the coldest part of Winter, read the book and then listen to this song 10x on repeat, and you'll never be the same again. 😳

I lived in the US for most of my life but never heard of Kate Bush until I moved to Ireland in the early 2000's. My husband recommended her to me. I chose to listen to 'Wuthering Heights' and at the time, was a little put off by the vocals so never gave her any more thought. Fast forward to hearing 'This Woman's Heart' and 'Cloudbusting' on the Handmaid's Tale..I looked up the singer and to my surprise, it was Kate Bush. She has since become my very favorite female artist, even knocking my longtime fave, Florence Welch, off the top of the list. When I gave Wuthering Heights another listen I wondered why I'd ever dismissed this enchanting, ethereal song. It gives one goosebumps! Kate Bush is a one-of-a-kind artist. She feels and revels in what she is singing, and becomes not just the person singing, but a part of the song itself, if that makes any sense. I'm a huge fan of Stranger Things and was delighted when I heard the familiar intro of 'Running up that Hill' in Season 4.

Out on the wily, windy moors
We'd roll and fall in green
You had a temper like my jealousy
    Too hot, too greedy
    How could you leave me
When I needed to possess you?
I hated you, I loved you too
    Bad dreams in the night
They told me I was going to lose the fight
    Leave behind my wuthering, wuthering
    Wuthering heights
Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy, I've come home
I'm so cold, let me in-a-your window
Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy, I've come home
I'm so cold, let me in-a-your window
Oh, it gets dark, it gets lonely
On the other side from you
I pine a lot, I find the lot
    Falls through without you
I'm coming back, love, cruel Heathcliff
My one dream, my only master
Too long I roam in the night
I'm coming back to his side to put it right
I'm coming home to wuthering, wuthering
    Wuthering heights
Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy, I've come home
I'm so cold, let me in-a-your window
Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy, I've come home
I'm so cold, let me in-a-your window
Oh, let me have it, let me grab your soul away
Oh, let me have it, let me grab your soul away

This video is so fitting to the song. I have always been a Kate Bush fan and loved this song since it first came out but it was many years later that I got around to reading Wuthering Heights. Reading the book I could not stop thinking about this song and since then it has made this song so much more special. As a hobby carpenter I vowed that someday I'll build a large mahogany cabinet around my bed enclosing it to the window and wait for Cathy to visit.
I just got to add how absolutely perfect her voice fits to the mood of the the book. Her voice is ethereal and haunting and so amazingly captivating.

Just a little correction: "Wuthering Heights" was not released on 4 November 1977. The single was initially scheduled for that date, however, Kate was unhappy with the cover and insisted it be replaced. Some copies had already been sent out to radio stations, but the single's release would only officially happen on 20 January, 1978
