- I was given this IBM NetVista 6790-11A M41 Model, along with that HP Vectra PC.
This one however was fully dead. No signs of life.
I've suspected the capacitors given how many of these machines fail from this time period.
Join along in the fun as I try out a first time motherboard repair.

It's alive! Nice work and a nice machine. Good move putting 98 on it, it'd have been like treacle with xp. I always practice soldering on old modems.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah I thought Win 98 would be a good choice for some DOS games. Plus there was drivers for it. It was a good test machine to try a re capping with. Next will be surface mounted caps haha yayy
Really nice job saving this one. It gives me confidence to try my hand at one soon!
Cheers Mike! Yeah you definitively should give it a try. Especially if you have something dead like this and that isn't super valuable
Nice job you did to saving this IBM machine. I love your content. Greetings from Steven from the Netherlands
Glad you're enjoying the content! And hello from New Zealand!
Отличная машина, у старых компьютеров есть душа!
Спасибо! Действительно, у них есть душа.
Hopefully google translate worked there!
I’m shocked this system was headed for the bin. They are solid machines and perfect for retro gaming. I paid around $150 to get one because these are not easy to come by where I live. I got a black one but similar specs to yours. I was able to replace the power supply with an SFX size with a little better total wattage. I have a Voodoo Banshee in mine and upgraded the cpu to a 2.4GHz and bumped the ram to 512MB. I dual boot WinME and WinXP.
Yeah it's amazing what gets thrown out. They're not too common here but were used in many schools. The black ones are hard to find as well. I never thought about replacing the PSU as I forgot that SFX is smaller. Good option for upgrades. Sounds like you've got a good retro gaming machine out of it!
@@thesmokingcap I certainly did. I have a Voodoo 3 in mine, which was gifted to me by a seller on eBay. (There’s a story there to tell about that in itself if you’re curious.) The original PSU had a loud fan and was low wattage, so the SFX PSU was the best replacement given an original PSU was like $30-$40 on eBay. Holes don’t all match up but it’s secured well enough with two screws. I have no idea why IBM thought the PSU fan should be used for cooling the CPU as well, so I had to replace the heatsink with a heatsink and fan combo. The rear case fan was dead, too, so I replaced it. A lot of mods for sure, but the machine is pretty quiet now and will last longer with the improved power and air handling.
@@mesterak oh wow! A gifted voodoo 3! Yeah I I'd be interested in hearing about that one. Sadly I so t have the machine anymore as I sold it to make room for others. But it's gone to a new home
@@thesmokingcap sad to hear you don’t have the machine, but at least it’s being loved by someone else! As far as the Voodoo card, I had purchased a GeForce2 GTS card, but after a week there was no response from the seller and it hadn’t been shipped. I kept sending kind messages and waiting patiently. The seller finally responded and told me that he had been in a car accident. I consoled him and told him to take his time because his health and family come first. After about another week, he reported to me that he could not locate the card I bought, but because I was so patent he was going to give me a Voodoo card. I told him he didn’t have to, but he insisted because he had a few of them. He did some minor repairs to card, put on new thermal paste, and shipped it to me. I thanked him over and over and befriended him on Facebook. As it turns out, he belonged to several of groups in FB that I was also a member of. This is probably one of only a few times my kindness and patience were truly rewarded, but I’ll take it! I am a proud owner of a Voodoo 3 now knowing that if this had not happened I would have never afforded to buy one. There’s the story of my Voodoo 3. 👍
@@mesterak Oh wow! That's quite a story! Yep sometimes life is like that. It's great he managed to help you out as well. He's also probably happy to see such hardware go to a good home as well. If I had the room to keep this machine I would have. But I didn't sell it for a profit, just the cost of the new caps I put into it really. The new owner is very happy with it
I'm surprised to see cheap brand caps in an IBM machine. I have one exactly like this, and it has Rubycon capacitors, all still good. The yellow capacitors are polymers, not electrolytic, and won't need to be replaced.
Oh wow! That's lucky that you don't have to re cap your machine. What caps are in the power supply? That's the other failure item. I ended up selling the machine off not long after this video as I wasn't using it. But assume it's still going
I've always kind of considered a Pentium IV was maybe not old enough to be considered worthy in the "retro computing" area, and too old to be worth anything for more modern tasks. But I'm a sucker for that form factor. I have an old Compaq EVO P4 under XP lying around I don't know what to do with... Win98 could be an interesting option, just like you did here. But it's still really noisy... As I said, it sits right in the middle between "almost useless" and "could be a somewhat fun project" :)
I know what you mean, they probably have a few more years to wait before they're old enough. At least this one still has native Windows 98 drivers. I remember those Compaq Evo machines. They do run quite warm some of them as well. But you're right with being in the middle of useful and useless haha. This machine doesn't have soundblaster emulation sadly, but still has AGP and a Windows 98 supported Chipset at least
I'm not sure I have ever seen a white NetVista
Oh really? I've seen a few of the white ones at my school but not many of the black ones. There can't be too many left kicking around these days
It seems there are more black models available than the white ones, but regardless I love these desktop systems. It is way easier swapping out graphics cards in these cases vs. a regular tower case. I’ve been having fun with mine testing out various old graphic cards in it. I did install a Soundblaster Live in mine as the onboard SoundMax has some game compatibility issues.
cuánta memoria RAM tiene?
I believe it had 128MB or 256MB
