That is awesome! Nice video. I am purchasing a used 2017 Adventure Island Tandem. I’m a novice, but would love to get one of the spinnaker kits. Thanks for the video.
Had the tandem island with the fins and electric motor and Jib . Amazing craft but not sure I would really call this a spinnaker and if they wanted really good benefit from it, by the way it's mounted, put the Jib/spinnaker out one side and the main sail off the other side to capture more of a tail wind providing more thrust and also balancing the boat
I have been doing a lot of research on the AI, and always come back to 'pointing ability'. I know in 2015 there were some design chances, hull shape and dagger board, I'm wondering how those changes might have helped? What is the windward tack pointing angles 45/45? With the spinnaker, knowing it is not for windward work, 60/60?
I'm a bit late with my reply, I don't know if you're still looking into it. I own a newer model (2019) tandem island with the new at-the-time seat and pedal system. They're definitely not "pointing" boats. The best you'll get upwind is about 50ish degrees to the wind and I found that favoring speed at those angles was more enjoyable and probably as fast as trying to point to 40-45 degrees, like most multihulls you're better off trying and favor speed to angle.
pardon my sailing ignorance, but this looks a lot like an oversized jib. is it a spinnikar because it's big to fly upwind because it would create Lee helm?
It looks hard to control the rudder from what I can see in your video. You're constantly fighting and correcting it. It would be nice if Hobie can come up with something to fix that. The Jib/ spinnaker looks great.
Hey Alistair, I see you don't have the suggested Hobie setup for your spinnaker. It looks like you are using Railblaza mounts or something similar for your lines on the akas. Have you had any issues running like that or would you recommend that type of setup. Would you do something different?
+Bryan Edmonds It's part of the spinnaker kit, and is part of the halyard. You pull the rope which goes to the back of the boat, up to the top of the mast and then attaches to the head of the spinnaker. One big rope.
+Jeff Singleton It's just called a Island Spinnaker kit- available from your local Hobie dealer. There's an install guide on our web site www.seqic.com.au

Well, is this upgrade worth it? I have an Adventure Island yak and am wondering if the spinnaker kit is worth it.
I am surprised at the lack of shrouds, from mast to rear/outer arms to the amas. That backstay doesn't look to be enough to me
The mast does not need any stays, it is strong enough to support itself.
Man, makes me wish I was sailing.

I was wondering what the spinnaker was

You use it on a downwind or a beam reach
Agree though, the way it is setup is more ‘jib’ like

whats this boat like coming back in with big surf?
What does it do?
Alistair, did you make the backstay yourself or did it come with the spinnaker kit?

Can you tell me what the name of this spinnaker kit is?

Hi! How can you record your actual speed and course, and put them in the video?
Hi Roberto, I have a GoPro, and it measures speed and course etc; you can overlay that info when editing the video
Its a gennaker
