Hadn't thought about the steering issue before but you are right. Antiquated turret arrangement on these German cruisers requires some shuck-n-jive to get a reasonable proportion of the main guns in play.
This is pre-CV rework. DONT SWAP THE HYDRO FOR DEFENSIVE AA, IT SUCKS. GET THE INSANE GERMAN HYDRO. Also, most people already know, but WG buffed the HE pen on German ships
Hey, U.P.K., what would you recommend for a stealth/survivability Hipper? It might be neat to sneak to within ~11km range, brawl it out, and survive the egress.
Well, you can give it a try and see if it works out, but basically you'd need CE on the captain and the concealment module in the T8 slot. This would make the ship far too frustrating for me to play with the slow rudder shift time. I hate slow rudders on anything but battleships (which can tank shells). On cruisers, it can be the difference between a citadel hit and a normal pen.
Thank you for your great vids. I bought Eugen knowing it was a hard to ship to play well in to force myself to play better (and a great captain/daily win point earner :D ) and will take all the help I can get. Almost every match is bottom tier and it's really forced me to up my game. Not always fun, but I've noticed it's helped my performance in other ships lol
It's amazing. you feel the real power of german AP. It's first time, when you feel the joy of grinding through those horrible german ships to get to her. I had lack of ingame currency and i had to buy Roon. I thought it out for 3 day "whether to let hipper go or not". Ultimately , i had my eyes set on hindenburg, i sold it. Belive me, for it's class , it is better than roon. an example i, in hipper , alone killed 3 ships,all of them shooting at me. They were Edinburg(damaged me highest of the three), Leander, and Mogami. you hit anywhere below and after smoke stack with this shit, enemy ship will explode. To hipper, Atago is like a walking ammunition house, and will explode atago as early as possible. Due to sluggish maneuver and no repair consumable, Atlanta or any other ship can suck it's life. Beware of HE shells.
Agreed on all accounts. Pudding in KanColle is a really good ship. I Just hope her, Iowa, and Saratoga come back soon so I can add them... preferably not a "Hard Only" drop!
If Saratoga will get kai ni in the next patch then she'll be an event drop. At least I hope so. Indeed, get them on normal or easy difficulty would be sweet.

Appreciate the history. Germany used "ultra" high pressure boilers on some of their destroyers also, but it did not seem to work out. Fortunately engine reliability is not modeled in World of Warships. (Probably were good for 20 minutes, anyway.)
A Bismarck ran into an island and I came up behind him in my Hipper and got a random AP Citadel hit through his stern at 6km lol what is this black magic.
I’m about 40 or 50 away from Yorck. I play way more wot, and when I do I usually play German BBs of which I’m getting close to finishing up my Bismarck upgrades, and moving on to the fredrichdegrosser
Good review! Love this ship... and the line only gets better from here. I have to agree with you that this ship isn't underpowered at all, people for some reason have difficulty playing it. I guess the HE buff is significant as well since it can penetrate most deck armors when targets won't show you broadside. The only down side is it doesn't have smoke or radar so it's not good for competitive play.
Her strength in competitive play is best in tier hydro but unfortunately that is nearly useless when you factor in that at T8 you have a bunch of Radar cruisers already =\ The closer in play style seems to hurt her a lot too :(
I got my Hipper not to long ago and like the ship. The HE even after the buff is just ok, starts a fair amiunt of fires. The AP is great IF they can get pen, but when they dot its like an HE shot. It seems like you can shoot and shoot for not much then you get that one shot that does 10K damage and you feel awsome, but I think American AP does more consistaint damage with better pen angled. The ship is very big so you really need to look ahead to figure out what to do. It is the first german ship with some armor and the turret traverse is really good. In the whole the German line can be confusing. t1 thought t4 should never be played, t5 and t6 are alot of fun with the 360 turrets and range, thee hipper does not turn very well, has no smoke or heal or anything that makes it really special but it is fun to play, maybe couse I got out of Yorck!!! With my usn crusiers i know to hang out around islands but the german guns dont alow for that because they fire much flater. What tactic does anyone recommend?
The USN 8" AP is far more reliable in penetration because of it's more favorable autobounce angles which allow for shots to penetrate at much shallower angle's of impact. German 8" does not get this flavor at all but it does get really high AP alpha damage which means if it is broadside, it will take a lot of damage! Generally speaking, I prefer to be mobile in my ships vs stationary. That holds true for the USN ships too. Being stationary behind and island is great and all but it's hard to actively support your team from that location if your team is keeping the enemies away without actively pushing. For the Germans, playing the mid range engagements with support is the best way to play them in my experience. That's why I run double ruddershift upgrades instead of stealth!
Whiskey's Gaming Lounge I took double rudder as well other wise its the turn of a bb. Everyone says us and german cruisers are squshy but all cruisers are if you line up against a bb. my New Orleans I find to be very tanky at times bs other cruisers and Hipper is the same. I dont have russan or ijn are there cruisers tanky and can rush a bb. All in all i like the differences between the us, german, and british line.
Whiskey's Gaming Lounge I used to be a fan of rudder shift over stealth but the added dispersion to concealment mod made me decide to switch. I still do miss the amazing steering gears and admit it can easily go either way. I do like ambushes especially when I can hit for such high alpha and rail guns that have an easy time hitting the target!
I love playing this ship, but with how match making is right now I'm forced to assign a new commander to her after every battle so I cant have skills, I cant put on flags or camo either or I'll just get top tier battles 9 out of 10 times. That's really frustrating....
I would assign one commander to her and enjoy the ship to her max rather than pulling a commander out of her! :( If you want to do that, I'd buy the Prinz Eugen which is essentially the same ship but as a premium you don't have to retrain commanders to play her! :)
LOL, between this and the "48300 Stats" instead of Hit Points is probably a good indication that "late night/early morning" recording is a bit dangerous! :P
this video said how to play the hipper yes? that's how not to play the hipper. you sir are a nice guy nonetheless. the hipper kites a lot more and does not go in like that. that's what got you nearly killed and makes you ineffective for the rest of the match unless your team picks up the slack for you. treat her nicely, she deserves it without her heal
I've seen a number of these "How to play..." videos now and I've got a serious issue with them (or more correctly, they have a serious issue to them): You don't actually teach how to play them. You talk about their history and ship stats for the first half of the video, then simply show a random gameplay footage. This isn't how an educational video is made. If your intention was to simply circulate tired old gameplay videos then fine, but the title "How to play..." betrays your intentions and create false expectations if that's the case. Show us why you do the things the way you do with that ship. Use footage that highlight a particular point you're making. Tell us what sort of style that would suit to that particular ship and for what reasons. You already post a shit ton of gameplay footage. I though this was supposed to be something different.
Are we watching the same video? I explain my map positioning and reasoning behind using certain shells as well as the tactics involved in playing Hipper to her best. If things are overly generic, it's because the game as a whole isn't difficult to understand. Hipper only has a few weaknesses, none of which are particularly difficult to play around and they are nearly impossible to show in a battle. Map positioning is far more difficult, especially for inexperienced cruiser players, as it determines when you can and cannot push and if you do it wrong you'll get punished hard. Whiskey's Gaming Lounge I would make the case for Propulsion mod2. I understand your reasoning for double steering, which grants a 5s rudder. Prop2 + Steer3 grants improved accel and a 6s rudder. I prefer it since it gives an edge to island knife fighting. 1s steering isn't that much of a difference. Also the AA is powerful at Range, so I boost it with AA mod and AFT. short range AA isn't much but the 5.1km med range AA is a good boost. I plan on getting Manual AA since the ship is generally good at everything else in basic form. Double Fighters, Adrenaline Rush, Vigilance, CE, AFT, Manual AA. I might add PT or go for PM at 19. I focus the skills that add support to the team. Double Fighters for AA and Spotting. Vigilance for torpedo spotting, it boosts German torpedo detect to a ridiculous 4.5km using your sonar. AFT, plus mod, brings your long range AA to 6.5km. Manual AA doubles it's effectiveness. that builds a powerful AA suite before even deciding to bring Def Fire consumable. it makes choosing German Hydroacoustics much more palatable. late game it makes you a terrifying threat to that highly skilled DD who survived while you battle for caps and the win. A high health pool and these skills and mods let you protect the BBs early game and hunt the DDs late game. With the necessary steering and annoyingly good acceleration from around islands. tell me what you think

I'm not peacekeeper but Hipper has an advantage over New Orleans in most categories where all Hipper is missing is radar.

On Hipper Roon and Himdy there is a metal box or some kond of armor perhaps in the middle of the ship. do you know ehat it is for?
