    instead of multiplying the first row by the first column, can you multiply the first column by the first row?

      No; Matrix multiplication is none associative. If u have 2 matrices A and B, AB≠BA generally. What you are implying is effectively doing BA instead of AB. Which will not result in the same outcome. So short answer is No.
