I hope I get to be an "old elk hunter." I'm going to turn 59 in a few weeks. I told my wife I'd do the backcountry elk hunting until I was 65. Now, with llamas, she says I've moved my target to 75.
This has to be some of the best elk hunting content I’ve ever seen and we need a behind the scenes with more of beau batty!!!

Thank you, my MT elk hunt has come and gone, was at full draw 2xs just couldnt get a clear lane, but I had some Mountain goats at 20 yards 😀 and saw a ton of bulls. So hopefully next year. Good luck on the rest of your season!!

I thought of Randy today when I was cutting up a deer. Of course I thought of my family and the good times of deer hunting with them over the years but I definitely thought of Randy. Randy has definitely left an impact on my life. Probably think of you guys when I move further west and start elk hunting.

The Nosler partition is a meat machine!
Unfortunately my 270 does not like them, but I’ve been having trouble getting it to shoot worth a crap with anything lately so it may be time for a new barrel. It’s been at my side since the start, and I used to sit around shooting targets barely able to see through the heat mirage as a kid so I’m sure I took some life out of the barrel lol
Agree. Some folks say that me shooting a .308 with Nosler Partitions makes me old. OK, if that's the case, call me old. But, the elk sure seem to die from that combination.
Before getting a new barrel, possibly step up to 150 grain. The first five bulls I shot were with a .270 and 150 grain Nosler Partitions. If I went to 130 grain bullets, that rifle preferred AccuBonds. I can't explain why, but I just went with what the rifle was telling me.

those llamas are diesel powered. those general season elk seemed to be more vocal than on some limited entry archery bull tags ive been on. great stuff.

Got drawn this yr first yr putting and and we here in Manitoba get drawn for archery elk ever 2 yrs, I shot a big cow and was excited as if I shot a bull, was a hunting experience I will never forget, very proud of my cow. Oh and what good eating she is

Glad you liked it. Yeah, more elk need to get the memo that the .308 won't work on them. I've got about 20 bulls on my shop wall taken with a .308 that didn't get that memo.

Awesome hunt, adventure & country/scenery! My favorite time of year for sure cant beat the weather cooling off, the color of leaves changing, deer rutting, elk bugling, moose rubbing their giant antlers on everything etc! Time for epic adventures, giant mature animals & filling the freezer

That is the temptation, for sure. But with warm temps, we had a lot of meat we were responsible for.

I’m surprised you did a frontal shot with a 308. Good job. That’s a good hunt.
Partition bullet at 100-110 yards. No problem for .308
at that range, no problem at all
Much further distance and I would not have done it. But, putting it right down his gullet was an easy shot and extremely lethal.

Hunting bugling elk and calling them in with cow calls while hunting with a rifle…hmm. Never done that before. Maybe I need to start hunting Wyoming.

Must be nice to get to go hunting all the time and getting paid for it. Your sponsorship is very good. Howa, Nosler, and Leopold are very good for us hunters regardless. If you don't get paid, how do you pay for your crew, tags and other expenses?
Yeah, it is nice. I don't make any money at it, but it is nice. It's been a lifelong dream and after 35 years as a CPA, I get to live this dream.

I am just getting in to this western hunting and need some input on rifles scopes. I am confortable with the caliber I currently shoot (.338 wm) but could use some help on optics as I havent typically had to deal with much beyond 100-150 yards. Randy, what do you have mounted to your .308?

This has nothing to do about hunting. A couple years ago you had problems on a bear hunt and you mentioned you had liver problems. I do not know exactly what condition you have but I do know that milk thistle in the liquid form a tablespoon a day, and then drink some water on an empty stomach, and also eat the root of beets. The milk thistle,
will help heal the liver and the beet root Also help cleanse it. Give it a try and in six months you’ll be carrying the elk out instead of the llamas. Good luck.
Thanks for asking. I have lost my Portal Vein and associated plumbing that goes to the liver. Liver function is good, it's just that I only get 30% of the blood flow that a normal person's liver receives.
