Anbernic RG35XX Final Review
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 8 авг 2024
- The Anbernic RG35XX has been out for a couple months now, and with some recent updates to the GarlicOS custom firmware, I think it's time to make a "final" review of the device to see if it's worth its modest $55 (+ shipping) price tag.
Where to find the RG35XX:
Anbernic.com: bit.ly/3YmokyH
AliExpress: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DDd...
Amazon (more expensive but Prime shipping): amzn.to/3wMs5Rc
RG35XX GarlicOS starter guide: retrogamecorps.com/2023/01/03...
Note that near the end of the video I said it has a "micro HDMI" port but it is in fact a mini HDMI port.
This was a review unit sent to me by the manufacturer. All opinions are my own, they did not see this review ahead of time, and no money was exchanged in any way.

Man, your videos are so incredible. I wish you reviewed everything I'm considering buying in life.
Big facts here. Always awesome videos love all of them specially as I've gotten back into retro gaming via emulation specially on handhelds
I know right?
This guy is so energetic and his reviews are extremely well put together

Was just thinking this. Solid review all around.
Just ordered an OG GB version of this and greatly looking forward to it. Your exhaustively comprehensive reviews have been essential to being able to make an informed buying choice.
Hope you enjoy it!
@@RetroGameCorps Does Garlic OS have a SEARCH function? I'm not able to find it. Have to go back to stock OS to use Search function :(
My sentiments exactly too. Cant wait for mine to come tomorrow
@LIL D 916 I'm in the UK got it next day through "DroiX"
Can you use Bluetooth wireless headphones?
This is such an awesome channel, and thank you for your service, Russ! I served on USS Topeka (SSN 754) on the Submarine Base at Pearl Harbor.
Man I was actually looking for a refurbished GBA for the longest time, but recently found out about these. Did a lot of research and saw a lot of your videos, finally pulled the trigger. It's almost a no brainer, they're a bit more expensive as I'm typing, but the way orignal GBA systems are going, this one is almost a no brainer. Thanks for the work you put into these videos.
New to retro gaming and have been binge watching your videos. Ordered my RG35xx! Can't wait
I really appreciate the effort you put into each video. Everything is explained extremely well and at the end the viewer learns everything they need to know to make their own decision if the device is the right choice.
I got the RG280V for my son for Christmas after watching your review. I played it too and it's awesome, which made me want to get a handheld. I picked up this RG35XX and I'm totally happy with it. It's my first handheld ever and brings me back to when I was a kid.
RIP MiYoo Mini 😭
As much as I love the 35xx and will probably love the Mini+ I sure hope the teeny tiny form factor doesn't get abandoned.
Awesome vid as always my dude!
Great review! Wow! $55 (+ shipping) for this seems like an incredible deal! Honestly, despite not being perfect, this seems like a retro gamers' dream come true! Garlic OS seems really awesome as well!
so cool i got mine
too
Does it come with Garlic OS or do I have to install it?
You have to install
I bought it last week after watching your first video and for the price I really can’t complain. Perfect for playing GB/GBA games which was my main goal and excited to see which handheld I’ll move on to next. 😁
Your earlier review got me to buy this as I was extremely impressed at how quickly garlicos came about and improves the customizability of the device. Your written guide also made it a quick and simple process to set up. Can’t believe this thing comes from the same company that made the souljagame consoles lol. Now I play all my childhood gba games on it!
Awesome work with both video review and updating your setup guides! With GarlicOS and the continual updates, the 35xx has overtaken the Miyoo Mini as my go to handheld. The bigger size is more comfortable, the hands don't get as cramped after longer play time. Not selling the Miyoo though, it's too hot a commodity...
Sell it while it's hot, get the most money that way. That said, having a backup is not bad, I expect. Do you feel the miyoo is less durable than the 35xx?
@@bipbop3121 Nah, the few extra $ profit won't break the bank vs the regret of not having one at all. As far as durability, the 35xx feels slightly more solid, however I haven't dropped either. Only heard from others that the Miyoo 'is' fragile.
I ordered this and just got it in over a month ago. Recently updated it and it’s so good! I’ll also be picking up the miyoo mini+ in when it’s readily available but for anyone wondering, this is a great handheld. It’s definitely worth it
Just ordered one myself. This will be my first retro handheld. Question if you don’t mind.. the operating system it comes with has games preloaded. If you update, do you have to put your own games on it?
You sold me on the 35xx so I just ordered one. Can't wait to get it set up. Thanks for the great content!
I got one of these to be my first retro handheld a few weeks ago and I'm really glad I did. It plays everything well and with all these updates to Garlic I've got a fun project to tackle this weekend. Thanks for all the videos and extensive coverage of this device. It made my choice really easy.
How long was the shipping' patiently waiting 4 mines
@@devin9748 It took about two weeks ordering from the official site. Places like Amazon or other sellers could take more or less time so I'm not sure there. I hope you get yours soon!
I love that the community fixes all the software issues that Anbernic ships with, but it gives Anbernic zero incentive to actually release a solid OS. They can half-ass it every time knowing that someone from the community will save the day.
It's nice that the community is willing to do the heavy lifting, but I wish Anbernic would at least try.
It's nice that the *FLOSS* community is willing to do the heavy lifting,
but I wish windowsUsers would at least try to use any linux distro for their daily workload driver :)
The basic one that comes with the 353V actually isn’t bad for once. Was actually surprised.
At least this time they had some arrangement before the machine release, the developer got a couple of free units and access to some extra info to port the os.
Anbernic are a device maker, not computer programmers. Anbernic are best at delivering a great device at a great price. The programmers are great at programming. If Anbernic were to hire programmers or develop the OS, it would increase costs. This customizable and dynamic market is best
You’ll never beat decentralized work.
Won’t happen especially for software.
Don’t blame a device manufacturer for a software issue
Really loving the couch format nice to see your face it makes the reviews less sterile - great work I’ve used your channel for my three first handhelds!
The best part about these devices is I can play them without worrying about Wi-Fi. Adding Wi-Fi to them kinda takes away their best feature, and that’s for something you can take into a government building or airplane without worry.
There has never been any issue bringing wifi devices anywhere, is there? Just turn wifi off turn the system off when requested.
it is a problem for agent 47
@@thesidneychan old job I had wouldn't let you bring Wifi capable devices into the area even if you disabled it. :(
@@thesidneychan Some government and many high security buildings will not allow them. Some will prohibit you from bringing in a device with a camera.
@@ceremus that's understandable! It's just the wifi part that I found quite niche, since I can only think of some specific work places, industrial places, where wifi interference might cause problems to equipment. I've been to Disney Sea in Tokyo for a video shoot and they forbade us from using certain wireless audio equipment because it could screw with their sound system. They didn't confiscate them thankfully.
The function for the price here is what makes it best in class for me. I can see how it's compared to Miyoo Mini, but I'd consider this the best budget handheld. There's room for both in my collection.
Plus they're actually available.
Sure seems better than the miyoo in every way.
@@operator8014 Apparently the GPU has been unlocked in the last day or so as well
@@kaiserkreb would it be able to run shin Budokai (PSP)???
@@WholesaleJewelleryAustralia No idea. There has been lots of game testing going on and it does seem to run a handful of PSP games pretty well, considering the power of the system. Very much a work in progress.
I've watched hundreds of videos about retro handhelds but never fancied anything outside of the Steamdeck and the Analogue Pocket, but I've now got a grey RG35XX coming in the post as a result of this review! GarlicOS looks perfect for pick up and play vibes.
This was an amazing review of this system. I've been trying to decide which handheld I'd like to get for my first retro system & I think I'm gonna pick this one up! Thanks!!
Been watching your for sometime now. I love the videos, they are very informative. I just purchased and received the RG35XX. I love it and I am looking forward to ordering new systems based on your reviews. Thank you.
Thanks for the video review and the super in-depth written guide (I'm a sucker for following written guides over video tutorials). Got the RG35xx for when I'm on call overnight. Can't wait to get stuck in. Hope you and your loved ones are safe with all that's going on over there.
Thanks for the support! We're on a different island, but thank you for the concern.
Thanks for the review. I decided for my use case this device makes the most sense for me and will be using your guide to get it setup once it's in! Thanks again!
Recently ordered one of these in the nostalgic translucent purple and I am so excited for it to show up. I do plan on trying to put garlic OS on it and will be following your guide.
I'm sad that I was late to the game in trying to pickup a Miyoo Mini 2. After watching all your videos on all the mini retro handhelds, I bought this one as soon as I hear about it from your first video and followed the guide to install Garlic OS. I'm loving it ❤️
Found this channel yesterday. Love it! Subscribed instantly. Good look on all the help. Just bought a 35xx. Can’t wait!
Awesome! Thank you!

I just ordered this system and I'm really excited about the rg35xx I'm a 90s kid so alot of the games have alot of nostalgia for me and everything that thing plays is perfect for me and my style of relaxation gaming. Thank you for your reviews of this system
Bought the purple see thru version after watching your videos, excited for it to come in.
Edit after receiving and setting it up with garlicos and the roms I play. Pretty nice experience for the money can’t lie.
Just ordered yesterday and I'm looking forward to upgrade it to garlic OS as soon as I get it. I'll follow your written guide, thanks for the review ross. 🙏
Bought mine last week and just waiting for it to ship but really excited to get my first retro handheld.
Ended up buying one because of this, and I’m pretty happy I did. Also it’s a bit more pocketable than I expected. Thanks for the recommendation!
cool to see this as soon as I open youtube, escpecially with the fact that my RG35xx arrives on Saturday :D
Just purchased one based mostly on your videos on it, thanks for all the info 👌
i've been highly debating between getting the rg35xx. seems like a great device for such a great price and widely available. but i'm also thinking on stopping myself from buying to see reviews of the upcomig miyoo mini plus.
it seems like garlicos has some catching up to do w onionos but has great potential. it's hard to not press that buy button w how easily available it is though. I would like to do a speaker upgrade though. hopefully there'll be some resources on how to swap them out in the future.
Thanks for the great video! You knocked it out of the park here as per usual!
UPDATE: In love with the RG35xx. Installing a dual sd card set up was a breeze with your guide. Much thanks!
Just ordered one, thans for the incredible video. I will be following the Garlic Guide! as soon as it arrives.👍
This looks awesome, I was having a hard time choosing between the grey and the white. Ended up choosing the white so it looks a bit more modern and different to my original game boy 👌🏻
Thanks Russ!. I love the dmg one. You should try out the better buttons for the back. They are a game changer for this device! They make it much more ergonomic. Also obviously garlic os 1.0 is a must, I use it with my onion is card from my mini. So good!
25:32 Greetings from RetroAchievements, thanks for the shout-out! Hopefully someday it won't be as niche of a platform - part of that will be that we'll hopefully see fewer and fewer handhelds skipping out on wi-fi as time goes on.
Thanks for stopping by, I'm a big fan!
The best retro handheld. Love this thing on airplanes, playing the Minnish Cap, Golden Sun, Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Kirby, and 2D sonic. This + the steam deck will make any flight a breeze.
Exactly what I have. This for most retro games. And the steamdeck for things like N64 and up. Especially GameCube and ps2
@@NovaIsTheBot People of culture
@@cryengine_x stop trying to get attention. The steam deck is good and you know it. Yes its not the most powerful on the market. But it IS the cheapest. And almost always does exactly what everyone wants it to do.
@@cryengine_x "Nuh uh - my product is better than yours". You are an NPC.
@@cryengine_x You're the one starting shit. We just enjoy the product, unlike you who identifies with them.
Honestly all the colors look great on the 35xx. I bought 3 one for each one of my kids. The only issue I have with the clear models aesthetically is the type of adhesive they use is very visible on the back of the device stuck to the battery cover. Also quality control seems shotty at best when installing my sets of better buttons my grey model was missing the pieces locking down the back buttons. And one final note if you install better buttons into your 35xx take extreme caution when removing the old shoulder buttons. I've worked on boards with multiple handhelds so I generally consider myself to have a sensitive touch, but the little plastic bars holding the shoulder buttons into the device are very sensitive. With a soft touch I still lost 2 pieces on 2 handhelds which render the L2 on one model basically unusable and another button very finicky on another model. Word to the wise please take extreme care when doing this mod and follow the guide given with it as well.
or, just don't mod it at all
@@tynao2029 yeah that sounds like settling for using a worse system I'll pass

You've sold me on this! My wife and I are both ordering one today. We have a huge collection of retro handhelds and have never tried an emulator console, but this looks fantastic.
Order me one too and ship it to me. Charity is awesome
A little tip, when on OG gameboy you can cycle through RetroArch screen colorization presets with the trigger buttons
Nice tip, thanks!
You did an amazing job with this review!
Been watching this handheld and channel for awhile! I finally saved enough money for it! I am so ready! I was gameboy color kid so you know it's about to go down 😊
Finally have my rg35xx in my hands. Now to have you walk me through installing Garlic!
Thank you for the thorough review. I have a Steam Deck and have been using that for emulation but I want a cheaper option mostly to play NES/SNES games. I want something smaller that I can fit in a pocket but not too small where it's uncomfortable to play. This seems like the best option and I just ordered the retro grey. It should arrive later today. I'm looking forward to playing it but I'll definitely need to check out your written guides to get the box art on there and change the theme. After having the box art on the Steam Deck I can't go back to just a screen of text lol. Thank you again and good luck with your channel!
Cheers for the video Russ, excellent as always. Im Tempted by this, and the mention of Amiga emulation probably tips me over the edge. Have you done Amiga emulation with this or similar powered retroarch devices? Was wondering how tricky it is and what the performance is like. I was pretty happy with Amiga emulation on PSP for reference. Thanks!
Just got one of these. Gonna try the Garlic OS. Thanks for the great info brother.
Another upload!! This day is great
Just bought RG35XX.
A little jewel this console.
I'm replaying all the titles from my childhood.
Only downside I've seen so far on ps1 titles is a slight audio delay and sometimes some writing in the subtitles is like missing pieces of letters.
Excellent overview thanks for giving me yet another device to do homework on and possibly add to my wish list! It’s size is a positive more than a negative price is right however.
More chicken screen time in 2023!
Just bought mine on the strength of this review. ill be reading your garlicOS guide next.
amazing overview. all my general questions were answered 👍🏼
Thx so much for your review Russ, I ordered one. I'm a former 351v owner and had been looking for something a bit smaller (not too small). This fits the bill for me, and has a nice budget price! This sounds like a huge downgrade, but it was all about the size for me along with a CLEAN, SIMPLE OS. GarlicOS looks awesome and I'm excited to experience. I was always jealous of that on the miyoo mini but my large hands and old eyes can't use something THAT SMALL.
For my first device, could you please give me a suggestion, should I buy the RG351V or the RG35XX?, The analog and the performance are the things that I need to consider. Thank you!
Thanks for the pocket test! A small detail to include but means alot!
Glad to see this has matured. I'll probably put together a curated collection on one for my nephew. Do you have to remap the same controller every time or is it a one time thing?
I got 2 RG35XX. I simply love it and now use it more often than my Miyoo Mini.
The device feels solid and the properly working HDMI port is a big plus over the Miyoo Mini+. Battery life isn't great though.. and the USB charging passthrough needs to be enabled on Garlicos so you can basically go full console mode using your tv and a gamepad while charging.
Realistically on handheld, how long can the battery last on a single charge?
This is well worth $55. This is the perfect handheld for me as I just want to play Dr. Mario and Tetris on the go. The default OS outputs NES games incorrectly so GarlicOS has been a lifesaver.
I was lusting for an Analogue but it’s 4x the price and this does everything I want. Also really annoying that Analogue forces you to use physical carts or ROM drive carts.
its not $55. Shipping is NEVER free on this.

Hey Retro Game Corps, just found your videos and have bought the rg35xx as a result. I'm having lots of problems with getting mame games to work and was wondering what you have done to get it to work on your device. Cheers
Really holding out for a 5 to 7 inch 4:3 handheld. I´m totally amazed nobody has done one yet considering the screens are readily available
I ordered mine this evening. So hyped. Got a 2DS XL and Vita that I have homebrewed but it's not the same as this. This will just work and I won't be locked to the wide style grip that Vita and 2DS/3DS has. I.e. controls on the side of the screen.
Great work and review!
Great review! I'm curious about the overclocking... what, if any, impact does it have on battery life and heat?
Dont do it it will mess the battery.
I literally just bought the RG35XX but from Amazon today. It looks like it comes with a micro SD card with a ton of games on it already. It'll compliment my Steam Deck quite nicely!
Part of the first 10 watchers, and I should be working!

I may not be top 10, but I definitely should be working.
If the Miyoo Mini+ runs into scarcity issues, then this is probably my alternative. Garlic OS really sold me on it though, I would never buy it with the default software.
I've had the 351p, 351v, RP2+, still have my RP3 and now the RG35XX.
This thing is my new daily driver on the latest build of Garlic OS.
I believe it fits a very niche group of an already-niche market; I'm in the "vertical form factor WITHOUT analog stick" fan club.
The only game I'd ever use the stick for is Gran Turismo and I'd rather play that on the RP3 with widescreen hacks.
PS1 RPG's are amazing on this thing; Maintain aspect, Bilinear 2x, Grid2x filter and turn the brightness up 1 notch higher than you'd have it without the filter. *Chef's kiss*
Great to see!
The garlic OS came out so fast and so impressive!
ikr, linux and FLOSS community is awesome!

Is the screen bigger 9n the white or is there just no bevel? The screen on the white looks so much bigger
I love this device. Worth every penny.
I was kind of ignorant to the existant of all these types of devices, and when I was looking around I saw your videos on the Miyoo Mini v2 and immediately bought one, kinda glad I did since now as you say its very hard to find.
Placed an order for one of these last week. I have the Miyoo Mini but it's just too small for my hands to play comfortably for more than a couple minutes at a time. I think this will be better - especially with GarlicOS.
I have a 280v and medium sized hands and while it is great for quick plays it gets uncomfortable after extended sessions. 35XX is a lot more comfortable.
as a fellow entitled hoarder junkies, i have all major chaynese emulators released, and i keep whining over those I owned whenever new product released.
Speaking about fragile devices, my RG351M have had some hard falls and it takes'em like a champ. A little scratches here and there but still works flawlessly.
I have dropped my 280v from my pocket a couple of times, still working good.

Love the reviews, still like the idea of a pocket retro. Steam deck is still my favorite and phone works decent, but a small device with real buttons is just so nice sometimes.
Very good review. All the Anbernic consoles came with games inside?
I really wish we could get a straight up RG280V upgrade. For me, it really just needs an internals upgrade, and the RG280V was my first handheld, so, I'm very favorable of it.
Also if we could do a short video going more into detail about box art and that whole process that would be amazing. Day three of trying to get the box art to work after following the written guide to a T. Also I have a dual SD card setup
Thanks for the review, just ordered one of these after watching it - What's the largest SD card supported in each of the slots?
Thanks for the review. As someone who has been looking for a miyoo mini for awhile at around MRSP, the RG35XX is a tempting alternative. I just like the size of the miyoo mini better but there's a chance i will never be able to get one.
having played on the miyoo mini, after like 30 mins to an hour i think my hand cramps up a bit from hold it weird, but unless you are mainly playing rpg or not high action games, i think the miyoo mini is great. but this rg35xx looks more comfortable for side scrollers and a bit higher action type games because it has more surface to grip with the palms at the bottom corners so you dont need to hold it with your pinkys, at least in my exp.
Hello Ross! Very happy with this full video about GrlicOS firmware! I initially did not want to take this console, but now I do not regret it a bit!
The guys are great fellows who created GrlicOS and did not abandon it!
The sturdiness is what elevates it over the Miyo Mini for me. Even adults accidentally drop stuff. I can't count the amount of times my tv remotes or controllers have fallen off my couch or coffee table.
Nice review. I just bought one for $40. I think it'll be totally worth the price.
When you said end of week I expected sunday
Huge W
just ordered this because it has a real time clock unlike the miyoo mini plus,. I've had 2 miyoo minis and you're right about how fragile they are! My second one broke the screen INSIDE my bag! Hoping this one is alot more durable. Something I think was good about the miyoo min i in general is it just looks good, and other manufacturers have seemed to take notice. Usuaully these sort of things look very jank to me, but they obviously copied the miyoo mini styling which I think is a good thing. Thank you!
Also a tip I think for Yoshis island I think is to just play the GBA port. I think its pretty acceptable to play if you're having slowdown issues with the SNES one, that's usually what I do but the overclock feature seems to fix that issue, I'm excited to see what its like!
I ended up ordering the RG300 vecause i wanted something that was entry level. Given the 26$ price tag i doubt it could be beat elsewhere since i got it from amazon. Im hoping everything goes well with it, because after seeing borh of your reviews for this and the RG300 i may nab one of the newer products down the line. Im hoping to find something sub 100$ thatll play Gamecube games, as i have many that i enjoyed on that console. Thanks for the content!
