  • Watching the wheat harvest on this arable farm in the Netherlands is like stepping in to a time machine and travelling to an era when the harvest was done at a more leisurely pace and with smaller equipment. The experience was certainly nice for one afternoon and I don't envy the combine driver without a cab, air con and in the dust!
Harvesting is carried out by a New Holland Clayson 1540 of 1970s vintage. Two different generation Ford 8210 tractors cart the crop to the main farm building where it is stored. A Ford 5000 and trailer act as a back-up. This three men team is able to safely gather in the wheat crop and enjoy themselves.
Many thanks to Mr. Bakker and combine driver Rick van Regteren for allowing me to film this scene! The farm is located in the North of the Netherlands in the Dutch province Groningen. I have tried to retain as much of the original sound as possible with a little tasteful music added to create the right atmosphere. I hope you will enjoy this mini docu.

These machines were definitely built tough. It is incredible how after all those years, they can still head over to the fields and do a day's work perfectly.

That takes me back, to late 70's, agri contractor I worked for had 6 new holland & 1 Claas combines, 5 of the NH had 15ft cut, 1 had 17 foot cut & Claas had a 16 foot cut, only 2 had a cab fitted, the NH7070 & the Claas, other NH were 140s and 1540s, I used a 140. dusty itchy times, as most of corn we cut was barley, followed by wheat and oats. Oil seed rape wasnt grown in our area in UK.

Bedankt Jan. Afgelopen week is er wel wat geoogst maar ik denk dat driekwart nog gedorst moet worden.

Dit is in het mooie hoge Noorden. In Groningen. Thuis bij mijn ouders. Hulp is er in de vorm van de ouwe buurjongen op de combine. Vaders op de trekkers en de eigenaar/ de boer zelf in de schuur om de silo's / drogerij in de gaten te houden

I remember my granddad wore goggles when combining and when he took them off he was all clean around the eyes and really dirty everwhere else. 😅
He had a 9 ft. Dronningborg D900 combine.

That FWD 8210 is a little over the top for towing a small grain trailer!

Yes a smaller tractor would be sufficient but the farmer didn't have one available.
