(08/23, add some information) an over-simplified explain here: This game is a re-creation of "journey to the west", and in ancient china myth world which WUKONG lives in, humans can get supernature power to become a "god/神仙". Practicing Buddhism or Taoism is a way of becoming "god/deities". Animals can also receive supernature power, and they become "monster/demon/妖怪", not "god". Here, monster/demon is not always evil, they are just different from humans. In many stories, the monster can live with humans or even have a marriage with a human. in those stories, humans are often more evil or stupid or greedy or coward... The rank or class of this world is roughly like this: god/deities > monster > human > animal. This rank is a metaphor of ancient china society, but not enough room to explain it here, knowing the rank is ok. So monsters want to live in the form of a human, or at least act like a human because they are in the hope of becoming a "god". WUKONG is a monkey born from a stone who finally become a "god", he is not a "pure" god(human -> god), he remains some monster/demon characteristics. This contradiction is the source of many re-creations including this game. From Wukong's point of view, the first half of book 'Journey to the West' is his rebellion against the regime of gods, while the second half is his redemption as a bodyguard of a mortal human, at the end of the journey, he gets the title "Winning Fighter Buddha"(斗战胜佛). His performance before and after was so different that it is suspected that he died halfway and an impostor completed the journey. In this hypothesis, those readers denied his obedience in the latter half of the story, they asked " Can't wukong be himself, real, true self?" Just think in another way, that wukong has always been himself all the way, such "tragedy" has a general meaning. At first, he fights against the world fearlessly, and at last, he compromised, "made peace with God". wukong of the day is now paddling cell phone, waiting for the next subway :). Back to this trailer: This trailer shows a monk tells a story that happens in a temple relic occupied by a group of monster gangsters. -> The giant wolf boss at 7:38 is their leader, he identifies himself as a Taoism priest, and get a Taoism name "灵虚子" or "灵虚真人" he has a friend who is a black bear. but not shown in this game. -> The minor boss at 2:53 is also a wolf. check his feet, you can see that he is a wolf wearing human cloth, not a human with a wolf head. An interesting point that is he is persuading the player to practice Buddhism while himself wearing cloth more like Taoism. But I don't think this is a mistake. Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism are peacefully integrated inside ancient Chinese philosophy, although they have different origins. The integration is so strong and stable and so connected to the social structure, that it became a shackle in the mind when the Chinese have to face the outer world in the last several centuries. Among them, Buddhism is even imported from ancient India, the original story "journey to the west" is based on a real tang monk's pilgrimage and study to ancient India at around 630AD. But not many people in modern India believe in Buddhism. May I say it is a good thing that we do not establish crusades? :) -> The little potato-like guy at 4:49 is "土地公/local earth god", a kind of minor god. like a nymph in Greek myth, but not that pretty. -> Many of you may wonder "why he is fighting cloud at the last scene at 12:00?" he is fighting against god's army, the giants in the background are the generals of the gods. also, a scene shows that he is facing four giants at 11:48, they are the four kings of heaven(四大天王). Here also reflect the integration. In the original story, the army belongs to Taoism god, and four kings of heaven are Buddhism god. wukong was captured by a Buddhism god who received a request for help from Taoism god, then been a prisoner for 500 years before his redemption. -> You guys may also be confused about why there is another monkey king with better weapon and better armor stop us from finishing the boss. and spend several seconds showing shining gold characters on his stick at 10:44. We Chinese guys are quite excited seeing this scene because it gets to the most suspenseful part of the story: Who is the real WUKONG? whether the monkey king who finally becomes the god is the real monkey king who born from the stone? (Is the hero at the end of the journey the same person when the journey starts?) (are we still us when we grow up/old ?) if you look carefully enough, you will find that the storyteller(at the beginning and end of the trailer) himself is an old "monkey" too. the floating belt behind him indicating that he is a "god". yes, there are multiple monkey kings and multiple explanations. you can even take them as the "ego", the "id", the "superego" of the monkey king. but it is best to let the game itself to explain it. Here is some subtitle I translated. (time according to original 13 min version) (storytellers start telling, skip it cause it has English subtitle) (sneak in as a cicada) 1:46 wolf gangster A: wow! Here is some wine jar! 1:47 wolf gangster A: I wonder if there is any wine in it! 1:49 wolf gangster B: Do not be so greedy for wine! 1:50 wolf gangster B: We two would be 灵虚真人's snack if we mess this up! (fight at a bridge) 2:33 wolf scout: Alarm! A hairy face monk intruder! (minor boss fight) 2:48 wolf sword drillmaster: who are you, dare to disturb my practice? (after seeing the player's character) 2:54 wolf sword drillmaster: oh, another monkey 2:59 wolf sword drillmaster: sir, why not drop your stick, and learn some Buddhism with me? 3:05 wolf sword drillmaster: how do you think? (after been beaten) 4:00 wolf sword drillmaster: you ... Can it be that you are the man... of...destiny as our king told us? (this fire should be related to a fire in the original story of "journey to the west") 5:26 local earth god: the monastery was rebuilt then, 5:29 local earth god: but what would rebuild a broken temple help if human's faith burned into ash? (wolf howling) 5:40 local earth god: excuse me for leaving so soon!.... 5:45 local earth god: we will meet again after you go pass the plank road... 7:04 Guanyin (the goddess of mercy) Monastery (into the yard) 7:14 local earth god: hush, do not disturb that big dog... 7:17 local earth god: the monster in the backyard is a friend of BlackWind Monster. (7:22 wolf howling) 7:23 local earth god: damn! 7:25 local earth god: RUN, you little monkey, before it's too late! (local earth god hidden) 7:30 local earth god: you CANNOT return if you pass this gate! (7:38 LEADER: 灵虚子) boss fight ..... (the scene between 11:00 and 12:05 showing his legends, just like Hercules' 12 labors)
@@hareendrangangadharan6974 "Journey to the West" is one of the most well-known fiction in China. We started to watch TV drama of it and read that fiction since childhood. We have been longing for Wukong game like this for many many years. Anyway, thanks so much for @李沐升's explanation and translation
@@allen2759 isn't this monkey king film series is based on? actually I heard about this saga, but didn't entered to the story. Like lord of kings, starwars, planets of the apes I know it has a long history. I did put it on my list as later
Fun Fact: One of the common misconceptions about Wukong's 72 transformations in the novel is mostly the translation. The word they use in Chinese novel translates more to "72 changes" which relates to 72 schools of different abilities Wukong has mastered. "Transformation" is one of the "72 changes" which is only one of his 72 schools of abilities. And the "transformation" school of ability can turn him into way more than 72 different things/ creatures. Some of the other 71 abilities include things like clone, summoning, changing weather, enhance strength, travelling through different worlds etc... Give the Novel a go if you are interested, it's really good
@@Malpheance Wukong single-handedly beat all gods in chinese heaven and lost only to Buddha, so yeah he is very powerful. But some abilities he has such as "weather changing" are not to a large scale, it's more like "ah here's a big blow of wind" type of ability. When facing large-scaled problems such as drought, he usually seek help from the god of rain etc.
Has anyone seen recent videos of Atomic Heart with music by Mick Gordon? The Russian voice acting itself really adds to the story, making the characters more authentic and regal.
Fun facts about the inspirations the game got from the myth: 2:42 The Cicada form is based on Wukong's transformation abilities (as YongYea said) 3:26 One of Wukong's abilities is the paralysis (body freezing) spell (as YongYea said) 4:16 One of Wukong's abilities is the barrier (protective circle) spell 4:31 This isn't related to the myth, but it's fun to note that most of the Monkey Staff attacks are based on actual Shaolin Kung Fu. One of which you climb the staff (obviously the game exaggerates tho) 5:08 In the legend Wukong pulls his staff from his fur/ear...so him "sheathing" the lance in his fur/ear seems like a reference to that 7:40 In the legend Wukong is capable of tranforming into a giant and scary version of himself...this is possibly a reference to that, despite being much smaller 9:56 One of Wukong's abilities is transforming his hairs into clones of himself 10:14 Wukong is often seen taking the appearance of others. Usually it's used to trick his enemies...but in this case it seems devs change it to also get the powers of the one he defeated at around 5:00 11:45 The guy that stops you (the player) is actually Sun Wukong (with the classic metal armor and headpiece with the 2 giant feathers)...this is quite a plot twist since we we're led to believe we we're Wukong up until now 12:51 The classic "flying cloud" 13:00 In the legend Wukong actually invades the heavens, basically beating every god single-handed...seems like we'll get to play this part. Also, the game didn't really show off just how strong the Ruyi Jingu Bang (monkey staff) is...in this part you can see how it can change size etc Ps: There's certainly more references. I feel the bosses and the Earth God (5:50) are important characters from the tale; but i apologize in advance since i'm not an expert and have a superficial knowledge of the tale (in case i mixed something up) EDIT: After reading the comments (thanks @ha chi) and the positive response, here's a few more details: 5:22 I think this is just an Ogre (not sure) 5:50 Shows an Earth God (there are many) 12:35 This is Lei Shen, the god of thunder 12:41 This is Juling Shen, a gigant river god 12:49 These are the Four Heavenly Kings, the Buddhist protective deities 12:52 The dragon might be Bai Longma, a dragon prince son of the "Dragon King of the West Sea"
I don't remember a giant wolf in the original myth, and as I recall, there isn't really one single Earth god. It would actually be more accurate to translate that as the local god, as he is supposed to be the god that is in charge of a certain location only, and every region has its own local god.

The abilities of the Monkey king and the story of "Journey to the West" are common sense for average Chinese, but I can see how it may sound strange to ppl from a different culture. Just want to list some of the main abilities of the Monkey King from the original story, not sure how much will be shown in the game: 1. Transform into 72 different forms. 2. His weapon is "如意金箍棒“, shown as the gold characters on the weapon in the game play. It was originally the pillar of the ocean, and the Monkey King forcefully took it from the dragon king of the ocean. It can change size as he wish. So normally when he is not fighting, he make it needle-sized and hide it inside his ear. 3. He s also known for the ability to pull, blow his own hair, and turn them into his clones to help with the fight. 4. He can travel very long distance instantly on "筋斗云“ which is a special cloud that pretty much function as his personal jet. :) 5. He also has "火眼金睛“ which is an ability that he obtained when he was trapped in the Alchemy furnace in the god's realm. The ability enables him to recognize other transformed/disguised creatures/demons in their original forms. But what shown in the game was likely the story before he obtained the ability. Also it may not be needed for the game play. 6. "金钢之躯" which translate to iron body. He is immune to common metal weapons and regular fire. 7. His spirit can also go out of his body. In the story, when they are in an dangerous environment, he sometimes leave his body with the group to protect his master, but his spirit will travel far away to get help. Again, not sure if this will be shown in the game since the story seemed to be before the actual Journey to the West, also it may not be something needed for the game play. 8. Also common magic spells and superpower that Western super heroes have, such as enormous power, fly, freeze the enemy, moving things in the air, spit fire, ect. He is pretty much the ultimate superhero in ancient China. I am sure this is not a complete list of his abilities. That is why this game gonna be so exciting! I am so hyped! Hopefully they will pull it through and make the game available next year or the year after! -Narcoleptic Kitty
This reminds me a lot of Goku's abilities, and Goku always felt more chinese than japanese to me, and now I know why. These powers all would be great gameplay elements if put to the right use
he can shape shift has multiple clones but has one clone that legit almost as strong as him kind similiar that it had claim own identity other half wukong ability like to seven deadly sin meliodas sacred treasure ability but i think they all scale equally not divivded maybe or shadow clone level also shadow clones naruto borrow that idea
Why would I ever want a game like this when I have Avengers coming out, that’s half complete and wants to sell me a thousand loot boxes. How dare this company give me a polished beautiful game!
This game looks like the equivalent of those artists who draw a masterpiece and they just post something like "Just a quick sketch". EDIT: Thanks for the 1k likes on this silly comment yo
Exactly! I can't tell how many of my exes were amazing at drawing and would create something spectacular and they're like "I was just doodling" or "I don't really like it". That's what this game feels like. Drives me nuts though haha.

If you know the "Journey to the West", Monkey King's story within it and Chinese mythology universe, this game goes to the next level of pleasure and excitement : ) Some basic things about Wu Kong (i.e. Sun Wukong, aka Monkey King) to help you understand some of the actions and things you see in the clip: - Wu Kong was 'born' from The rock. (And the rock has background story where it comes from in the Chinese mythology universe) - Wu Kong went to learn how to be immortal for his fellow monkeys (eventually only learnt Kung Fu and skills/magic) from a 'god'. He can change into 72 forms of things/animals and can ride 'Jin Dou Cloud' (i.e. fly) - He has learnt from his master (the god I mentioned above) that he can turn his hair/fur into clones of himself to fight the enemies; - After he learnt his skills, he went back to his 'home town' and stayed with his fellow monkeys (they are normal monkeys). - He could not find a suitable weapon for a while. Later he got (snatched) his weapon 'Ru Yi JIn Gu Bang' (the staff) from one of the Dragon King's palace (his friends told him that dragon king has got a large collection of weapons). The staff can become bigger than skyscraper (or infinity big) or as small as a needle. To carry it easily, Wu Kong keep it in his ear. This is why you see he take it out and put it into the 'side of his head'. (This staff is not just a staff it has background story where it comes from) - He also removed his own name from the 'Life and Death Registry Book' when he was taken to the underworld according to the fate recorded in this book. - He has a famous battle with gods and their armies (because what his has done and the heaven failed to 'convert' him, they didn't treat him fair enough) and almost defeat all of them until Buddha take him down. - After he was trapped under a mountain for 500 years (he becomes almost immortal be cause he has eaten several magical/heavenly food and medicines during the battle with heaven), he was released to protect the monk Tang San Zang to go to the West (India) to get/learn the Buddhist scrolls back to ancient China. During this journey, He and his master San Zang has to overcome 81 challenges before they successfully return the ancient capital of China. - Because the monsters on the route heard the rumour that anyone who has eaten Wu Kong's master Tang San Zang will be become immortal, so every monster tried to capture Tang San Zang when he pass their territory. And Wu Kong and two other followers of Tang San Zang have to defeat all the monsters during the journey. - After they meet the Buddha and get the scrolls, Wu Kong was promoted to one of the buddha. (The old monk in the clip should be in this form) ...... Vast and complicated mythology universe behind this.
He was born from the rock? I may reveal my ignorance but does that mean that he had bad karma and given new life after death as rock? lol I read that Wu-kong got into some trouble for defying the heaven maybe he wasn't happy with his new lot in life as a mere rock :P I find Chinese mythology and all these xianxia stories pretty interesting tbh
Some studios want money, others wanna make games. And some more want both. This looks more like the 2nd option to me. There are plenty of Chinese studios that make good games (mihoyo is a good example. Sure they're gacha games but they still feel nice despite being mobile games).
@Azazel Well, they might be able to strike a deal with western publisher so they can release it in the rest of the world without scrutiny. That's my hope at least.
I remember reading Journey to the West many years ago. I believe I was in HS at the time. It's a Chinese classic and one of the most popular epic novels there. Involves a magic monkey, initially no-so-bright, brutish, selfish and vain, seeking immortality and tasked with bringing the Buddhist scriptures from India (India is to the West of China). It's chuck-full of adventure and discovery and each confrontation ends with the monkey becoming a bit more powerful and a bit wiser. It's such a beautiful story. Features characters such as the Buddha, Bodhisattvas, Lao Tzu, Daoist monks, various (Chinese) dragons, possibly Hindu deities (can't remember) and places such as China, India, the Heaven, underwater kingdoms (it's where the Chinese dragons live)... The journey is not only physical travel but it tracks the monkey's spiritual progress to the point where it reaches or comes close to Buddhahood. And the way the story unfolds... it's written as if it was meant to become an RPG. Can't wait. If this is done right, it could be the game to rule them all.
U haven't even mentioned the best part yet, the companions. Zhu Bajie (pig) , Sha Wu Jing ("sandy", I have no idea how to descibe him) and Sun Wukong (monkey) accompanies Tang SanZang (the monk). And holy crap their interaction with each other + character development is my absolute fav.
"This is some God of War..." dude , monkey king is the OG rebel God. He has been having war with the whole Heaven Kingdom, only lost to Buddha and humbled by his monk master hundred of years later.
I luv his spiked up hairstyle it gives me Super Saiyan vibe only toned down nicely. Call me weird but i've always loved the Monkey king when his hair is spiked up in a kind of natural, bu super-powered way. My perfect look would be this hairstyle of he Monkey King, combined with the Sith Assassin Robes from Force Unleashed.
@@AchiragChiragg read "OG rebel God", not "OG God of War". Sun Wukong was never a god of war, yes he fights OP, but only by himself. He has never led a decent army nor win a war. Draw parallel to Dynasty Warrior's Lu Bu, he's the most OP warrior, but he losses war as well. Fighting and waging war is 2 different things. The whole point of Sun Wukong's origin is to be OP enough to rebel against the "system"(the heavens here). That's probably the most important factor that makes JotW so popular, everyone wants to be OP enough to rebel against the society's established system, be it 16th century Imperial China or today in various societal stratification, racism, elitism etc. Kratos rebelled because of vengeance, Wukong rebelled because he could and he don't think there's a need for system. That's why he's a monkey, a symbolism towards chaos, rebel and anarchism. And the Journey to the West, is a symbolic trial to be in control of himself, and rein in his chaotic nature like a monkey.
I noticed some of you may get confused about plot and characters in this video. I’m gonna explain them to you. Wu kong, also called the Monkey King, is the protagonist in a Chinese literature classic, The Journey to the West. For us Chinese who do not have Marvel or other cartoons, he is like Captain American for Americans. You may do not understand who the monkey with a golden armor appeared when the protagonist is going to kill the big dog is. The golden inscription in his stick written in a traditional style of calligraphy(篆) says golden cudgel (如意金箍棒). It shows that this golden monkey is monkey king, because golden cudgel is monkey king’s exclusive weapon. After that, there comes a lot of scenarios. Some of them come from the journey to west; some come from Havoc in Heaven. This happens before the journey to west. After the Jade Emperor (the supreme deity of Chinese folk legend), decieved Wu kong twice, Wu kong granted himself the Great Sage Equaling Heaven and defeated a hundred thousand soldiers and generals from Heaven. The scene when Wu kong is fighting on the cloud is this story. Here is another guess about the plot. The storyteller at the beginning looks like a monkey. The ribbon in his clothes is floating, which suggests that he may be a Buddha. In the journey to west, Wu kong with his master and two junior fellow apprentices is going to the west to get Buddhist scriptures. After he got them, he was granted Buddha of Victorious Strife. So the old storyteller may be Buddha of Victorious Strife. According to legend, people will have different incarnates when they achieved certain state in practicing Buddhism or Taoism. The protagonist, the golden monkey, the old storyteller may be different incarnates of Wu kong. To achieve a higher level, he must kill all his incarnates.
The storyteller mentioned Wukong "died" on the journey and someone else helped Tripitaka acquire Buddha's scriptures. So my theory is that the real Wukong retires (or dies) at some point and tasks the player character (the unnamed monkey) with finishing his duty.
The theme song at the end was even a remaster of 云宫迅音, one of the most classic themes of a classic Journey to the West TV series from the 80s. Was hit with unexpected nostalgia bomb lol
They're hitting everyone in the feels with this thing. If they sneek in the Japanese tv series theme that westerners grew up with, this game is going to create world peace ! Heh heh heh. We need you now more than ever, Wukong.
@@larryprince2703 This is a Chinese game about a Chinese story. Most Westerners became acquainted with the story via a 1970s-1980s TV series from Japan, which was dubbed into English by the BBC.
@@goonagun If you couldn't see that it wasn't gonna be that great just by seeing the alpha, then I don't know what to tell you. There's a big difference from what Watch Dogs and Wukong showed off. Granted, Wukong looks a little oddly open with it's areas, but I don't think that'll make it bad.

Wolf Soldier 2: Forget it! If something goes wrong, we'll be the ones used to distill the next batch! 2:58 - 3:07: Wolf Soldier: Boss, I think I heard some noises coming from the direction of the mountain gate. Wolf Soldier 2: Quit worrying! What kind of suicidal idiot would come here when /I'm/ watching this place? 3:14 - 3:18 Chief of the Mountain Bandits: Those wolf runts may not be able to see you, but don't think you can get past me so easily! 3:34 - 3:36 Wolf Sentinel: Dammit! There's a fur-faced monk trying to get past us! 3:49 - 4:07 Wolf Cult Leader: Who dares interrupt my meditation? Oh? Another monkey. Why don't you drop your weapon and learn some Dharma (inner peace, "moral" path) from me? What do you say? 5:02 - 5:08 Wolf Cult Leader: You must be the chosen one...the king spoke of... 5:20 - 5:46 (Voice from underground): Little monkey - you've alerted all the yaoguai (monsters) here! (Voice from underground): You'll need to be even more careful in the area ahead... (Voice from underground): Little monkey - over here! (Voice from underground): Here, here! Over here! 5:49 - 6:51 Soil/Earth Spirit: I'm the Earth Deity of Black Wind Mountain, I've been waiting for you here for a long time. You look like - you really look like...(doesn't finish his thought) Soil/Earth Spirit: Oh, up ahead is the Temple of Guanyin (bodhisattva, or enlightened one, who represents mercy and features prominently in Journey to the West). And to think, it used to be full of the scent of incense (he's lamenting the corruption of the mountain and temple). Soil/Earth Spirit: Such a shame about the fire *gestures at the skulls on the ground*. Afterwards it was rebuilt, but the the hearts of the people (i.e. goodness) were burned to ash...what use is it to fix a broken temple? Soil/Earth Spirit: *hears howl* I'm out of here! *disappears into the ground* We'll rendezvous after you pass the plank road ahead! 8:13 - 8:34 Soil/Earth Spirit: Shhh! Stay quiet! Take care not to alert that giant hound! Behind that courtyard is an ally of the yaoguai of Black Wind Mountain, he calls himself Ling Xu Zi. If you continue on your current path *hears another howl* - oh no! Little monkey, run quick - it's not too late! There's no coming back if you go through that gate! 11:47 - 11:54 The characters on the stick that glow here are 如意金箍棒 (ru yi jin gu bang). This translates literally into "As-you-wish golden hoop rod", but a better translation for English-speaking audiences might be "Obedient Golden Staff" or "Compliant Golden Rod". The idea is that the staff does what you want it to, including grow as thick or long as it needs to be, being flexible enough to bend into a hoop, and multiply into multiple rods. This is the legendary weapon of the Monkey King Sun Wukong in the Journey of the West story, the implication of this scene is that we have not been playing as the real monkey king up to now, and the one who stops us is the real one. Or at the very least, one of us is the impostor. 13:44 - 14:03 The eight characters written in the calligraphic style are 白骨之后 重走西游 ("after the white bone, revisit the Journey to the West"). "White bone" here refers to 白骨精 or White Bone Spirit, one of the more memorable and named villains in the original novel. I think the implication might be that this telling of the story diverges from the classic novel from this point in the plot? I could be wrong. Explanatory notes: - Wine (not "wine" in the European tradition, but a type of alcohol today preserved as baijiu in China) in ancient China was traditionally distilled and served from jugs that are shaped kind of like the pottery of ancient Greece - Yaoguai are pretty much monsters or spirits, anything malicious and supernatural - some of you might know yokai from Japanese mythology, that term was a loanword from Chinese and means the same thing although Japan has its own specific monsters Additional comments: 12:47 - 12:50 Here we see the 四大天王, or Four Great Heavenly Kings. They are derived from the Lokapāla of the Buddhist tradition (from ancient India), and act as the guardians of the four cardinal directions in Chinese mythology. They're basically warrior kings that are often depicted as triumphing over evil. Western audiences can think of depictions of the archangel Michael kicking Lucifer's butt to the cosmic basement during the rebellion - these Four Heavenly Kings are often depicted as triumphing over evil in the same way. During the Monkey King's rebellion against Heaven, he defeats these four along with a massive laundry list of other warriors of Heaven. 12:51 - 12:53 Here we see Wukong on his nimbus cloud, which is what he uses to fly. We also see what I think is a white dragon, which could be the White Dragon Horse from the Journey to the West novel. In the book he was one of the sons of the Dragon King of the West Sea, and is initially supposed to be executed before having his sentence be changed to helping the monk Tan Seng complete his journey. He eats Tang Seng's horse by accident because he didn't recognize him, and transforms into a horse for most of the journey as penance. 12:57 - 13:09 This is definitely Wukong's rebellion against Heaven. It's just the cannon fodder here, so I think we can reasonably expect bigger and more impressive fights after this sequence.
Let's not forget about Bright memory being developed by one guy. Even if it's an indie studio, it's possible that the game will be as great as it seems
the song is from the classic tv series from 1980s, the movies in the 90s uses part of the song. I still think the actor who portrayed wu kong in the 1980s tv series as the best wu kong of all the subsequent tv or movies wu kong I hv seen
old Journey to the West movie? Not sure which you have in mind. But the oldest onscreen media I know of the mythology is the 80s TV series from mainland China.
The narrator basically said: "I'm sure you all heard of him and his journey, but the story I'm gonna tell you is something you've never heard before." So this game's journey will also be new to those who know Journey to the West. Noice...
My guess is that this is like a dark version of the story. Like how Americans did dark versions of Wizard of OZ, Alice in Wonderland, etc. Going by what the six-eared monkey said in the beginning, I am guessing that Tang Sanzang died from the White Skeleton encounter, hence the tombstone. So Wukong found the six-eared monkey to impersonate Tang Sanzang for the rest of the journey. The six eared monkey was the one that ultimately ascended to a buddha.
@@animeproblem1070 Well yeah, the original story had a bunch of people eaten by demons every episode. But what I meant is a twist where things didn't go as the original story and usually a main character dies. Like Oz was destroyed by the wicked witch or Alice was killed by the Red Queen and could never return to reality etc.
Sigerlion death would not make the story better or even darker the exploration of the psyche and the development of sun wukong mattered more than one of the main cast being dead
@@animeproblem1070 The point is to tell a DIFFERENT story. The death of Tang Sanzang would literally flip the script on its head. I didn't say it's a BETTER story. It's like Age of Apocalypse, what IF Professor X died? That's a story in and of it self.
Knowing that it's made by Chinese isn't a good sign either. They have a strong history with showing strong gameplay shows which end up being cinematics and the real game being garbage
This is always the case imo. Game company are selling you the idea of the game. They can't show you the final product. They always tell you that this is not the final product so you should take it in consideration before pretty ordering. That's also why I never pretty order
The game shows many details of WuKong based on the fiction "Journey to the West". 5:09 WuKong put the weapon into the ear. Since the weapon can be shrinked and Wukong likes put it into his ear 12:46 The Four God 13:03 The weapon rod (Ruyi Jingu Bang) can follows the commands of its owner, shrinking or growing to his whim 13:03 Wukong create a tremendous uproar in the heavenly palace The reason why this becomes big on Chinese social media is that, we Chinese has been longing for Wukong game like this for decades. And the BGM involves the traditional music instrument called Suona, which is an epic music appeared in Chinese special occasion.
Yea when I first watched that on IGN - I went from “ehh I’ll check this out, I’ve heard some things about Sun Wukong’s myths before so this might be good” all the way to “OMFG-- wait what? Huh?! WHEN CAN I BUY THIS??”
Actually, transformation is just one of the 72 abilities 七十二变 that Wukong presses. It might translate into “72 transformations” based on the name, but the character“变”(change)here actually means abilities, indicate that the practitioners of 72 transformations have so many different abilities that they can freely change from one to another. The abilities includes transformation, inhumanly strength, the ability to communicate with the deaths and minor gods, cloud riding, etc, and only those who has completed the training and mastered all 72 different abilities can called themselves practitioner of 七十二变. That’s why Wukong is so powerful, because there are only few who can both complet the training and mastered all 72 abilities, and he is the first(or maybe the second) one to accomplish that.
please correct me if im wrong bro, but did that er lang has 73 abilities? that's made this god is wukong nemesis/rival right? but can you explain it to me based on the myth/novel where and how did this semi god(half god half man) beat wukong?
@@bigdudut9353 Wukong and Erlang Shan did fight each, but since they both have mastered the same abilities, so they can't defeat one another. Their fight was seemingly going nowhere, so Taishan Laojun太上老君, the founder of Taoism interfered. He threw his Ring of Steel金刚圈 at Wukong and hit him right in the head which knocks Wukong out. So Wukong and Erlang Shen never find out who is actually better and stronger. This happened in the book, chapter 6.
@@AshramIndustries Its usually depicted like an open palm, with the fingers being the tops of the mountain range. The monkey king would be at the very bottom under what would be considered the wrist and palm.
its actually one of his basic abilities, along with riding clouds. In the original book, the clones can be as powerful as him depends on the length of the furs. Theories said that this game is based on the the myth about him fighting the Six-ears Monkey, which is his "brother", they saying that Sun Wukong died on the battle against that monkey and the monkey transformed into Sun Wukong himself and finished the journey to West. Based on what he saw here, most likely that Wukong survived the fight against the other monkey and now going for revenge as the other monkey is already finished the journey (as he wears golden armor with a gown, implying that he is now a general of the heaven army). You can see the old dwarf shows his surprise expression in the gameplay and said to Wukong something that : "You look just like it" but no hint what "it" is.
@@danghoang8958 .. I really hope they nail Wukong's distinct and unique personality... it's unlike any modern vision of what a "Hero" would/should act... lol....
So happy it's an action-adventure/RPG game and not simply a "souls-like." So damn happy. Edit: Before anybody else wants to hit me with how "soulslike" games are ackchyually "action-adventure/RPGs"... You know what I mean. "Soulslike" has many specific implications about gameplay that aren't standard for all action-adventure/RPGs. That is all.
@Mr. Ditkovitch the puzzles in souls games are in the lore, the "puzzles" in-game are usually glorified secret paths that have more to do with searching for an item and bringing to a place
There is a Chinese interview with the developers and here are something that are mentioned from what I understood: The game is not coming out anytime soon. The development team is small(30) and the main reason to create this teaser is to attract talented people to join in on the project. The teaser gameplay is the minimal standard they are trying to achieve.
The 30 talented folks on this team are just grinning ear-to-ear right now. I guarantee you there is already a massive bidding war in progress, but this team began as disillusioned Tencent employees...so I feel confident in saying that they will know the right paths to take here. 2022 or 2023 can't come soon enough.

You know what's funny? And I'm not kidding you here. Just the other day, I was venting and ranting to a friend about how terrible the animations look in most games, even some triple A games today, and about how important it is for the protagonist of a game (or any character you control, really) to have animations that look and feel cool and satisfying to see. Honestly, it's not even so much that the animations don't look cool. Usually, more often, it's just that they look, idk... unfinished? Or really unpolished? Ghost of Tsushima was a prime example of polished animation and visual presentation. Passion, care, and effort went into that game in such a way that it shined through in the animations. This is another example of that. This looks *really* well polished, and I'm already sold on it, even with so little information on it.
That's because animation is all about the art of _exaggeration:_ really selling a heavy punch by putting the whole character's weight behind it, or having a weighty character landing hard from a jump by really showing the impact of their body on the ground in the bend of their knees, etc. Unfortunately, almost all Western games make extensive use of motion capture, which either requires that the actors deliberately exaggerate their motions (as Andy Serkis seems to do), and/or a ton of additional clean up and layered exaggeration by the animators working with the mo-cap footage. Most don't bother, and it shows. It's always bothered me that developers spend so much time and effort on making their characters look absolutely incredible (with a ton of work on skin shaders, hair and cloth physics, texturing, and so forth), and then cut so many corners when it comes to animation, that they immediately look like arse just as soon as they move. If you want to see good animation (obviously done by hand), you only need to compare them to some of the stylish Japanese action or fighting games from studios like _Platinum Games, Capcom,_ and _Ark System Works_ (particularly Guilty Gear Strive). The one Western fighting game which does stand out to me is _Killer Instinct_ from 2013: that actually has some *phenomenal* animation - particularly Sabrewulf (who looks menacing just standing idle, as he shivers with a barely suppressed urge to rip and tear his opponent). Amazing. NetherRealm _really_ need to hire some of the talent who worked on that game.
@Soupmaster101 They lack passion due to the work environment. I've never experienced crunch in a game development situation, but I've worked 141 hours in 1 week to help start a small business, a restaurant. And that was only the week before opening, before that was around 70+. It took 3 months before I even got below 60 hrs a week. What they need is better working conditions. And to cut executive pay by half while helping to redistribute that pay to the employees actually doing the work.
I dunno ghost of tsushima, which I enjoyed was basically like every typical open world game with repetitive objectives to do. Graphics are really nice is some areas but very average in others, the story is bland, the best part of it is setting and the stance combat system which definately is inspired from nioh. Gotta say the wind mechanic was a nice touch though. In the end it's a very well done average game with some cool extra elements sprinkled on top to make it interesting enough to play, nothing special though.
I'm sick of purely cinematic trailers (or "teaser" trailers). I don't get why people still fall for them when you can't even be sure a gameplay trailer's representative of the final product.
@@MNGN101 I agree you on that, but if this indie game Dev doesn't deliver. Then it's a suicide for their image and business. So at least we have some hope that they might be able to do it if this is truly their passion.
As a Chinese player I am totally amazed. 西游记(The Journey to the West) is a classic Chinese novel which has profound cultural implications, and the dream of becoming 孙悟空(the protagonist, aka 齐天大圣)is deeply embedded in almost every Chinese kid's heart. 孙悟空 is brave, loyal, recalcitrant, and most importantly, he has flaws just as everyone else. I almost burst into tears when the music starts at the end of this trailer. That is the cultural gene of Chinese.
It actually boggles my mind how there arent that many chinese mythology that gets adapted into game in this era. So glad they made this one, hope the end product wont drop the quality too hard Just the idea of playing as Wu Kong and invades the heaven alone and fight the sea dragon king is gonna be amazing.
I always thought why there isn't a game where you play the titular monkey king himself. I mean ... its the most known Chinese tale known by everyones and his granma, even all over the world. And this game its AWESOME! its everything i always wanted to see in the 1st tale of Son Wukong.

Here's a fact: they have two studios, one mobile game, one PC+console, they use all their money from the mobile studio to support the dev of this game. what a hero.
This is a guess of the story. The character being operated isn't Wu Kong but an identical monkey named Six-eared Macaque aka the fake Monkey King. The Macaque boasts same power as Wu Kong: 72 trasformations, the Piercing eye of fire(this is not an official translation, hope you get it), using the legendary weapon Golden Cudgel etc. The Four Dimitrios Monkeys in Chinese Myth includes: 1. The Stone monkey. or Sun Wu Kong who is intelligent, lively and loyal. He has become the embodiment of wit and bravery in Chinese folk culture, and the Chinese regard him as a God. 2. The Six-eared Macaque, good at listening and observing the truth. He took the Monkey King title because he looks exactly the same as Wu Kong. Wu Kong even started to question his own existence in face of the Maxaque. Eventually the Buddha saw through the Maxaque's trick and Wu Kong killed this replica. Another theory is that the Maxaque never existed, he is the Wu Kong's heart demon, a mirror for Wu Kong to fully understand his soul. I'd be delighted if the game contains this epic story. 3. The Red Monkey, the controller of water. He is good at balancing Yin and Yang, avoiding death and prolonging life. 4. The White Ape is the controller of soil. He is a Taoist Kung Fu master and he practiced self-cultivation for thousands of years in central China. In ancient artworks, The White Ape also refers to sword experts. There are 3 monkeys presented in the video: the elderly one who tells the story, the Six-eared Macaque(maybe) that the player use and finally the well dressed Monkey King who poccesses the Golden Cudgel. Furthermore, the end of the video says ' A journey to the west once more.' which puzzles the time line of the whole landscape. My guess is the story told in this game may happen after Wu Kong returned from the west and probably out of guilty feelings he retook the journey to make up for the chaos he had created. Or maybe he went time travelling to stop the younger version of himself. Most natably when the God of Land poped up from the ground he said to himself: "Very similar, very." once again indicates that there must be something mysterious, maybe Wu Kong's indentity was stolen. The game is called Dark Myth: Wu Kong. We are expecting more legendary figures in Chinese Myth to appear in this series. Anyway, shut up and take my money.
What if it takes place from the perspective of Six-eared Macaque, but Stone Monkey AKA Wu Kong acts as the check to Macaque's primal/demonic urges? Because I couldn't help but notice that you eventually DO get to play as the OG Wukong - even saw what appears to be a re-enactment of his fight against the Army of Heaven. I mean, it wouldn't be the first time a story like this took that route.... or would it?

To people that are confused about the ending. The character showed up in the end was the actual Monkey King. If you are slightest familiar with "Journey to the West", I bet you are confused how can there be two Monkey Kings? Well here is a possible theory and some backgrounds. The answer lies in the story the studio is trying to tell which may be lost in the translation of the trailer. At the end of "Journey to the West"all the four main characters obtained Buddha status, or some form of godhood. In doing so, they must abandon their corporal carcasses. The story of the game picks up after this. From the dialogue of the NPCs you can see, they recognize the resemblance of the player controlled monkey with the legendary Monkey King, Sun WuKong. They keep saying, "you really look like him!" or "another monkey", which means they either have heard of seen him before. So, it is possible, the main character that is the player through out the game, is the mortal flesh which the King abandoned in obtaining his godhood. Since WuKong the Monkey King was born from the sky and earth through a sentient stone, this mortal carcass he left behind retained a lot of life, also the sins during his mortal life. Hence, the name of the game "Black Myth".
DisconnectHack “monkey king doppelgänger” is an actual episode in the original story. However canonically the doppelgänger was killed by Tathāgata, but since Tathāgata is the only entity who can identify the real from the fake, enthusiasts also suggest that Tathāgata might have killed the real one because the real monkey king is not disciplined.
Thank you for the information, I was wondering why there were 2, the description you gave made it that more interesting. I've always been interested in Sun Wukong but never read into any books made about him, but I think its about time to correct that given this game looks incredible.
Well considering the guy you play as was able to summon clones of himself, it isn't that far out of expectations that he could be a clone too, it's been done before in the forbidden kingdom
@DOOM Dragon Goblin Slayer Trinity You cant give the middle finger to Tencent. They have ties with the CCP. If you do, they end you. What you can do is lower your head, move on and pray to go under their radar. Which is what these devs are trying, I bet. Which is what they have failed to do because of all the traction this trailer is garnering. I hope them the best in the near future. They are gonna need all the luck they can get. One does not simply publish a successful product worldwide from inside China without the Chinese party's approval and supervision. And ownership.
Literally every single good Chinese game comes from their indie game market. Look at Honkai Impact, Punishing Gray Raven, Arknights, and Girls Frontline just to name a few
08:59 in case anyone didn't notice, the developer really put the attention to detail, as you smashing on something really hard and feel pain, the boss does react to it and shake its hand when the monkey uses the ability to block. The ability should be 铜头铁臂 (copper head iron arms) from the original novel which means invulnerable.
Game Maker Q&A Q: Why did we choose this time to release the trailer? A: The direct reason is that the development team is quite short of people, especially experts. We are very eager for China and the world, friends who are interested in high-quality action game development, can join us. Let's create this ascendant oriental magic world together. For details, please pay attention to the recruitment information at the bottom of the official website. The content will be updated dynamically at any time. Q: What is the payment model? A: One-time buyout. In the future, DLC and non-numerical items may be sold in the future. In addition, we are very happy to see everyone save the screenshot of this question and answer, in case we remind us at any time in the future. Q: When will it be released? I can't wait A: It shouldn't take 500 years...We will release when we feel satisfied, but we will also consider marginal effects and cost-effectiveness. After all, more works of Black Mythology are also carefully planned in our dreams. Q: Estimated time for customs clearance? Will other heroes be added? Will there be an online mode? A: I can't tell you for now. What worries us most is that we also love to play high-quality single-player plots, diversified career/weapon combat experience, and support for networked action games.

Here is a list of the takes from the games, especially for those who are not really into Journey to the West - This game is made by less than 30 people who quitted Tencent simply because Tencent was too profit-oriented which means they wouldn't be able to make things that are time-consuming. - They wanted to recruit more people to work for them, that is why they posted the video. - Ironically now many companies are trying to get them over to theirs with a super high paid salary - The monkey in this playthrough was speculated to not be Wukong himself, but another Monkey, 六耳猕猴/通臂猿猴, one of these two monkeys because of the weapon and the dialogues - The monkey that was stopping him from killing the wolf was said to be the actual Wukong, because of the weapon and his outfit. - The dynasty warriors like cut at the end, was because of the story where he was fighting against 100k heaven warriors. - Four Giants are the Four Heavenly Kings in the story each known with each own special weapon - The weapon he uses becomes small like a needle and stays inside his ear when he doesn't use it. - He is known to have 72 transformation techniques. - He is also known to spawn more monkeys like him with his hair and fur, just like Kagebunshin from Naruto and yes it was inspired by him as well. - He has gained fire eyes, letting him easily see through demons that are faking humans. - Demons in Chinese are called YaoGuai or YaoJing, literally meaning evil monsters and evil demons, and I can see them using those naming convention - Yes, Goku from Dragonball is not only inspired by but is him Wukong. Even the name is the same Son Goku - Sun Wukong, just one in Japanese and one in Chinese - Just like Dragonball Wukong rides on a cloud. - The ending music was the BGM of 1986 Journey to the west series. - About 11:10 where he got a headache and holding his head was because he had a ring on his head which will shrink when the Monk(his mentor) reading some specific text. Main purpose of this is to stop him from killing innocents since he is a YaoJing. - Other speculated legends that were in the video is 托塔天王(李靖) 11:32 known for holding a tower to absorb and put people in the tower cage. 二郎神(杨戬) 11:35 because of the weapon he is holding and known for having the third eye. Dragon queen which is also part of the actual story. 雷震子(雷神) 11:00 basically the Chinese version of Thor, the God of Thunder. - Chinese dragon looks like a snake flying without wings. - The fight against 100k warriors almost wiped out his whole monkey kingdom :D - Took them only 2 years to get to this stage, just insane. - The one that I didn't get was the Giant from 11:39 if someone has some idea, plz tell me who that Giant could be.
The Giant from 11:39 might be Mighty Miracle God(巨灵神) from the east heaven. And that roc like monster at 11:35 may not be the God of Thunder, but the golden roc (金翅大鹏鸟), a famous mighty creature from Buddhist mythology. In the book of Journey to the West, he fought against Wukong for some reason but was not killed.
@@fdustarsoul9967 Thanks for the info, I was having a hard time figuring that out. Almost about to start watching 西游记86. I have seen 西游记96 by tvb, but as far as I know, tvb had changed the story a lot.
I was reading an article about it and as you mentioned, that protagonist may not be Sun Wukong and this at 11:46 may be him, they mentioned one people's theory that he miiight be one of Wukong's clones who didn't disappear. I'd also just like to add, Sun Wukong like in Chinese, in Japanese the name's written with the same characters 孫悟空 (kanji in Japanese) and it's just that's pronounced Son Gokuu, yep, with double u, Japan as a country, officially uses certain style of romanization, as a consequence of that, others, mainly companies use that same style, that usually ignores double vowels, like Ryu should be Ryuu, or "ou" is written as "oh" or simply "o", etc.
There is this indie studio that transformed this lore into a beautiful and innovative piece of art, then there is Crystal dynamics/Square Enix that somehow transformed the most flashy license of the world into a repetitive, broken and buggy potato of a game
As someone who is a fan of classic mythology, and especially Journey to the West, a lot of the little details they put in delighted me. This game looks legitimately sweet as a rise to power of the monkey king.
Right?! My goosebumps got goosebumps. Fighting the army of heaven with the growing staff ! what?....no, no...that's jus some dust in me eyes... i'm all in on this game. They have NAILED it.
Mainstream gamers arent used to video games of all kinds. AAA execs and marketing just make everyone think there are only a few pop genres to keep you "engaged" in the same rinse repeat treadmills and spending.
Yeah. Graphics isn't everything. If they cant get the meat and potatoes(game mechanics, gameplay, the flow and fun etc..) it will still suck in the end even if it's a pretty game.
Never trust game play where the player doesn’t take damage or you see the player actually playing the game. This all looked like pre rendered animations made to look like a complete game... I mean it’s China they constantly lie about products... hopefully I’m wrong, he keeps saying sekiro but it looks more like god of war to me.
I certainly do hope this game makes a journey to the west... By the way, raised cloth/halos/rings behind portrayals of people or characters I believe represents some sort of divinity or enlightenment in Buddhism. So the old man is certainly "someone".
My bet is that it's the Monkey King long into the future and he's like that because out of all the immortality he got he forgot to ask for eternal youth

@@ToveriJuri I can answer your question. They have 2 studio based on 2 cities, one focus on mobile game another one focus on 3A game. you may heard the mobile game is came from there mobile game studio. They are making money from mobile game to make AAA game !

12:50: I think those giants are the Four Heaven Kings, judging from the few weapons that they carry. 13:00: Those armies are the heavenly soldiers. The soldiers that protect the heaven. This game is really interesting. Wu Kong can transform into animals and then the bosses he defeated while using their abilities in battle.
That last part, I did notice the character was using the fire staff techniques of one of the enemies he faced. Makes me wonder if one aspect is that some abilities are gained by defeating mini-bosses or even regular enemies. Either way, really interesting.
Do you know how hard it is to come out with something that has not been seen before? Most games have aspects from other games but it's usually done slightly different.

Just recently I've been watching the 1986 Chinese TV series The Journey West (which most say is the most accurate adaptation of the novels), so I'm definitely in a Sun Wu Kong state of mind right now XD
I mean, they said it's pre alpha, so its pretty good for that early of a build. Usually its worse. For example: halo infinite used that as an excuse of why the game looked like it did, saying "it was an older build from a few weeks before". So pretty solid pre alpha build for this game
Ace Warrior I always loved that excuse, it’s an old build of a couple of months. Like a couple of months is going to change the game to stellar quality😂

Me too. This is like 'triple A' games companies saying "Nobody likes single player games anymore"(meaning they don't like them because they cant continuously generate cash from them) and indie devs saying "We'll see about that!" Great news for the industry imo and I wish them well🤞👍😎

(08/23, add some information)
an over-simplified explain here:
This game is a re-creation of "journey to the west",
and in ancient china myth world which WUKONG lives in, humans can get supernature power to become a "god/神仙".
The rank or class of this world is roughly like this:
god/deities > monster > human > animal.
This rank is a metaphor of ancient china society, but not enough room to explain it here, knowing the rank is ok.
So monsters want to live in the form of a human, or at least act like a human because they are in the hope of becoming a "god".
WUKONG is a monkey born from a stone who finally become a "god",
he is not a "pure" god(human -> god), he remains some monster/demon characteristics.
In this hypothesis, those readers denied his obedience in the latter half of the story, they asked " Can't wukong be himself, real, true self?"
Just think in another way, that wukong has always been himself all the way, such "tragedy" has a general meaning. At first, he fights against the world fearlessly, and at last, he compromised, "made peace with God".
wukong of the day is now paddling cell phone, waiting for the next subway :).
Back to this trailer:
This trailer shows a monk tells a story that happens in a temple relic occupied by a group of monster gangsters.
-> The giant wolf boss at 7:38 is their leader, he identifies himself as a Taoism priest,
and get a Taoism name "灵虚子" or "灵虚真人"
he has a friend who is a black bear. but not shown in this game.
-> The minor boss at 2:53 is also a wolf. check his feet, you can see that he is a wolf wearing human cloth,
not a human with a wolf head.
-> The little potato-like guy at 4:49 is "土地公/local earth god", a kind of minor god.
like a nymph in Greek myth, but not that pretty.
-> Many of you may wonder "why he is fighting cloud at the last scene at 12:00?"
he is fighting against god's army, the giants in the background are the generals of the gods.
also, a scene shows that he is facing four giants at 11:48, they are the four kings of heaven(四大天王).
We Chinese guys are quite excited seeing this scene because it gets to the most suspenseful part of the story:
Who is the real WUKONG?
whether the monkey king who finally becomes the god is the real monkey king who born from the stone?
(Is the hero at the end of the journey the same person when the journey starts?)
(are we still us when we grow up/old ?)
if you look carefully enough,
you will find that the storyteller(at the beginning and end of the trailer) himself is an old "monkey" too.
the floating belt behind him indicating that he is a "god".
yes, there are multiple monkey kings and multiple explanations.
you can even take them as the "ego", the "id", the "superego" of the monkey king.
but it is best to let the game itself to explain it.

7:23 local earth god: damn!
7:25 local earth god: RUN, you little monkey, before it's too late!
(local earth god hidden)
7:30 local earth god: you CANNOT return if you pass this gate!

Fun facts about the inspirations the game got from the myth:
2:42 The Cicada form is based on Wukong's transformation abilities (as YongYea said)
3:26 One of Wukong's abilities is the paralysis (body freezing) spell (as YongYea said)
4:16 One of Wukong's abilities is the barrier (protective circle) spell
4:31 This isn't related to the myth, but it's fun to note that most of the Monkey Staff attacks are based on actual Shaolin Kung Fu. One of which you climb the staff (obviously the game exaggerates tho)
5:08 In the legend Wukong pulls his staff from his fur/ear...so him "sheathing" the lance in his fur/ear seems like a reference to that
7:40 In the legend Wukong is capable of tranforming into a giant and scary version of himself...this is possibly a reference to that, despite being much smaller
9:56 One of Wukong's abilities is transforming his hairs into clones of himself
10:14 Wukong is often seen taking the appearance of others. Usually it's used to trick his enemies...but in this case it seems devs change it to also get the powers of the one he defeated at around 5:00
11:45 The guy that stops you (the player) is actually Sun Wukong (with the classic metal armor and headpiece with the 2 giant feathers)...this is quite a plot twist since we we're led to believe we we're Wukong up until now
12:51 The classic "flying cloud"
13:00 In the legend Wukong actually invades the heavens, basically beating every god single-handed...seems like we'll get to play this part. Also, the game didn't really show off just how strong the Ruyi Jingu Bang (monkey staff) is...in this part you can see how it can change size etc
Ps: There's certainly more references. I feel the bosses and the Earth God (5:50) are important characters from the tale; but i apologize in advance since i'm not an expert and have a superficial knowledge of the tale (in case i mixed something up)
EDIT: After reading the comments (thanks @ha chi) and the positive response, here's a few more details:
5:22 I think this is just an Ogre (not sure)
5:50 Shows an Earth God (there are many)
12:35 This is Lei Shen, the god of thunder
12:41 This is Juling Shen, a gigant river god
12:49 These are the Four Heavenly Kings, the Buddhist protective deities
12:52 The dragon might be Bai Longma, a dragon prince son of the "Dragon King of the West Sea"
This comment need to be pin by YongYea and get more upvote.
One correction, he actually placing the weapon in his ear not his fur
Wait, if that’s not Wukong, then I wonder who it is that we’ll be playing as? I cannot wait for this!!

Just want to list some of the main abilities of the Monkey King from the original story, not sure how much will be shown in the game:

If you know the "Journey to the West", Monkey King's story within it and Chinese mythology universe, this game goes to the next level of pleasure and excitement : )
Some basic things about Wu Kong (i.e. Sun Wukong, aka Monkey King) to help you understand some of the actions and things you see in the clip:
- Wu Kong was 'born' from The rock. (And the rock has background story where it comes from in
the Chinese mythology universe)
- Wu Kong went to learn how to be immortal for his fellow monkeys (eventually only learnt Kung Fu and skills/magic) from a 'god'. He can change into 72 forms of things/animals and can ride 'Jin Dou Cloud' (i.e. fly)
- He has learnt from his master (the god I mentioned above) that he can turn his hair/fur into clones of himself to fight the enemies;
- After he learnt his skills, he went back to his 'home town' and stayed with his fellow monkeys (they are normal monkeys).
- He could not find a suitable weapon for a while. Later he got (snatched) his weapon 'Ru Yi JIn Gu Bang' (the staff) from one of the Dragon King's palace (his friends told him that dragon king has got a large collection of weapons). The staff can become
bigger than skyscraper (or infinity big) or as small as a needle. To carry it easily, Wu Kong keep it in his ear. This is why you see he take it out and put it into the 'side of his head'. (This staff is not just a staff it has background story where it comes from)
- He also removed his own name from the 'Life and Death Registry Book' when he was taken to the underworld according to the fate recorded in this book.
- He has a famous battle with gods and their armies (because what his has done and the heaven failed to 'convert' him, they didn't treat him fair enough) and almost defeat all of them until Buddha take him down.
- After he was trapped under a mountain for 500 years (he becomes almost immortal be cause he has eaten several magical/heavenly food and
medicines during the battle with heaven), he was released to protect the monk Tang San Zang to go to the West (India) to get/learn the Buddhist scrolls back to ancient China.
(The old monk in the clip should be in this form)
......
Vast and complicated mythology universe behind this.

Can't wait.
If this is done right, it could be the game to rule them all.
salvation and redemption, Wukong悟空, cited from Buddhism terms as epiphany of desire-less

@@IskandarTheWack they're just not good

"This is some God of War..." dude , monkey king is the OG rebel God. He has been having war with the whole Heaven Kingdom, only lost to Buddha and humbled by his monk master hundred of years later.
Nah. There are Indian Gods of War too. So not really the OG.

Growing up with the 80s version of Journey to the West, that ending soundtrack just straight up gave me chills down my spine. Love it!

@@connordutton674 exactly right
The storyteller mentioned Wukong "died" on the journey and someone else helped Tripitaka acquire Buddha's scriptures. So my theory is that the real Wukong retires (or dies) at some point and tasks the player character (the unnamed monkey) with finishing his duty.

The characters on the stick that glow here are 如意金箍棒 (ru yi jin gu bang).
13:44 - 14:03
The eight characters written in the calligraphic style are 白骨之后 重走西游 ("after the white bone, revisit the Journey to the West"). "White bone" here refers to 白骨精 or White Bone Spirit, one of the more memorable and named villains in the original novel. I think the implication might be that this telling of the story diverges from the classic novel from this point in the plot? I could be wrong.
Explanatory notes:
- Wine (not "wine" in the European tradition, but a type of alcohol today preserved as baijiu in China) in ancient China was traditionally distilled and served from jugs that are shaped kind of like the pottery of ancient Greece
- Yaoguai are pretty much monsters or spirits, anything malicious and supernatural - some of you might know yokai from Japanese mythology, that term was a loanword from Chinese and means the same thing although Japan has its own specific monsters
Additional comments:
12:47 - 12:50
Here we see the 四大天王, or Four Great Heavenly Kings.
12:51 - 12:53
Here we see Wukong on his nimbus cloud, which is what he uses to fly.
12:57 - 13:09
This is definitely Wukong's rebellion against Heaven. It's just the cannon fodder here, so I think we can reasonably expect bigger and more impressive fights after this sequence.

The narrator basically said: "I'm sure you all heard of him and his journey, but the story I'm gonna tell you is something you've never heard before."
So this game's journey will also be new to those who know Journey to the West.
The six eared monkey was the one that ultimately ascended to a buddha.
i read it it’s somewhat dark already
@@animeproblem1070 Well yeah, the original story had a bunch of people eaten by demons every episode. But what I meant is a twist where things didn't go as the original story and usually a main character dies.

There is a Chinese interview with the developers and here are something that are mentioned from what I understood:
The game is not coming out anytime soon.

Why spend time on that when you can focus on microtransactions and season passes?
I dunno ghost of tsushima, which I enjoyed was basically like every typical open world game with repetitive objectives to do. Graphics are really nice is some areas but very average in others, the story is bland, the best part of it is setting and the stance combat system which definately is inspired from nioh. Gotta say the wind mechanic was a nice touch though. In the end it's a very well done average game with some cool extra elements sprinkled on top to make it interesting enough to play, nothing special though.
Brian Watson How is it possible that you worked 20 hours a day, 7 days a week...?
This looks INCREDIBLY ambitious for an indie dev. Thank you for highlighting it, certainly on my wishlist if they can deliver on the initial promise.
This is how you showcase a game and this is effort, which are seriously lacking in many big developers nowadays
This is like a pre alpha. So the game play trailer is just made for this clip like the game with the ironman suits
This is a guess of the story. The character being operated isn't Wu Kong but an identical monkey named Six-eared Macaque aka the fake Monkey King. The Macaque boasts same power as Wu Kong: 72 trasformations, the
Piercing eye of fire(this is not an official translation, hope you get it), using the legendary weapon Golden Cudgel etc.
The Four Dimitrios Monkeys in Chinese Myth includes:
Eventually the
Buddha saw through the Maxaque's trick and Wu Kong killed this replica.

Nanorisk sure, that is one possibility.
The Buddha status explains that the face of the real Wukong seems to be more calm and peaceful compared to the rather angry protagonist.

Q: Why did we choose this time to release the trailer?
I can't wait
A: It shouldn't take 500 years...We will release when we feel satisfied, but we will also consider marginal effects and cost-effectiveness. After all, more works of Black Mythology are also carefully planned in our dreams.
Q: Estimated time for customs clearance? Will other heroes be added? Will there be an online mode?
A: I can't tell you for now. What worries us most is that we also love to play high-quality single-player plots, diversified career/weapon combat experience, and support for networked action games.

triple A devs: "But, but games are to expensive to make!"
@SirLockInBottom Tencent is the regime.
Here is a list of the takes from the games, especially for those who are not really into Journey to the West
- This game is made by less than 30 people who quitted Tencent simply because Tencent was too profit-oriented which means they wouldn't be able to make things that are time-consuming.
- They wanted to recruit more people to work for them, that is why they posted the video.
- Ironically now many companies are trying to get them over to theirs with a super high paid salary
- The monkey in this playthrough was speculated to not be Wukong himself, but another Monkey, 六耳猕猴/通臂猿猴, one of these two monkeys because of the weapon and the dialogues
- The monkey that was stopping him from killing the wolf was said to be the actual Wukong, because of the weapon and his outfit.
- The dynasty warriors like cut at the end, was because of the story where he was fighting against 100k heaven warriors.
- Four Giants are the Four Heavenly Kings in the story each known with each own special weapon
- The weapon he uses becomes small like a needle and stays inside his ear when he doesn't use it.
- He is known to have 72 transformation techniques.
- He is also known to spawn more monkeys like him with his hair and fur, just like Kagebunshin from Naruto and yes it was inspired by him as well.
- He has gained fire eyes, letting him easily see through demons that are faking humans.
- Demons in Chinese are called YaoGuai or YaoJing, literally meaning evil monsters and evil demons, and I can see them using those naming convention
- Yes, Goku from Dragonball is not only inspired by but is him Wukong. Even the name is the same Son Goku - Sun Wukong, just one in Japanese and one in Chinese
- Just like Dragonball Wukong rides on a cloud.
- The fight against 100k warriors almost wiped out his whole monkey kingdom :D
- Took them only 2 years to get to this stage, just insane.

@@bnawr4336 Those ignoring romanization is indeed annoying, and I am currently learning Mandarin and Japanese at the same time hahahah.
There is this indie studio that transformed this lore into a beautiful and innovative piece of art, then there is Crystal dynamics/Square Enix that somehow transformed the most flashy license of the world into a repetitive, broken and buggy potato of a game
Which game?
I'm thinking he means Avengers, which is purely meant to be heavily monetized and plays like utter trash.
Yeah just imagine if Avengers was single player focused with more time and energy spent making it
Avengers feels like Souless Cashgrab compared to this imo.
World of peeling potatoes......
The voice acting is really good. It's on anime levels.
Title: Black Myth: Wukong
RUclips: NO this is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Depending on the video its also Tomb Raider
It said tomb raider for me lol
it's an interesting system. Half the time I watch video about SSBU it gets labeled Smash4
The game we didn't need, the one we're all going to want
Sorry, but cyberpunk just hit 91 days and isn't delayed...
Mainstream gamers arent used to video games of all kinds. AAA execs and marketing just make everyone think there are only a few pop genres to keep you "engaged" in the same rinse repeat treadmills and spending.
@SpiderMan 62 That escalated quickly.
@@renmcmanus Are you being a bellend ironically or actually?
The one that will 99% be on epic because Chinese developer and Tencent.
Looks great! But if there's one thing I've learned over the years, don't get too hyped...
Most of these people here just don’t seem to get it. There will be another video of this in a few weeks/months talking about how mad everyone is lol
The Renaissance Man the fact that you’re right is killing me
The Renaissance Man fitting that it happened with Gotham knights last night
@@MaoRatto I mean does it really matter? Our government does it in secret already and they probably already have yours so might as well enjoy the game
@@MaoRatto Well even though I would not buy the game either if it is online, I don't care if my game data gets pulled by any government. It's just a game! It's not like I store my personal files on the game server.
@@MaoRatto Well, if you are worried about the privacy concerns of anti-cheat, even if it were single-player, the problem remains. It will probably use denuvo or something similar.
@@alexanerose4820 err no , Wukong have like 6 different type of immortalities , including eternal youth
1st one is when he erased his name from the book of mortal , 2nd one is when he ate all the peach of immortality which also grant him eternal youth ,3rd one is when he drink all the wine at the Queen Mother of the West's party , 4th is when he ate all the Pills of Longevity from Laozi's alchemy lab , 5th is when he got captured by the heavenly army and they throw him in Laozi's furnace to try to kill him , but he comeout even stronger because he is a stone monkey , the last one is when he obtain a Man-fruit , each Man-fruit grand whoever eat it 47000 years of life
the first 5 all happened before he meet Sanzang
When an indie dev studio looks more triple A than any triple A studio.
Even better than ubisoft lmao
Yeah I wonder how "Indie" a Chinese studio with these kind of resources is.
@motmus mom
FIlthy or not it's kind of silly to imply that A "small indie studio" is somehow outdoing all these western and Japanese AAA giants, when it's more than likely that they access to resources a small indie company normally wouldn't have.
@@ToveriJuri I can answer your question. They have 2 studio based on 2 cities, one focus on mobile game another one focus on 3A game.
you may heard the mobile game is came from there mobile game studio. They are making money from mobile game to make AAA game !
@@williswei
Yeah mobile games are indeed money makers. But that still means it's kind of misleading to say that they are just a "small indie studio" when they have access to AAA levels of money.
I'm not a fan of this style of game, but this particular one does pique my interest.
I really wish this studio well!!
12:50: I think those giants are the Four Heaven Kings, judging from the few weapons that they carry.
13:00: Those armies are the heavenly soldiers. The soldiers that protect the heaven.
This game is really interesting. Wu Kong can transform into animals and then the bosses he defeated while using their abilities in battle.
the Lords of Heaven , yup.
四大天王没毛病,持国、增长、广目、多闻。
same thoughts... if people haven't check monkey king asian movies, they're really good... :D
That last part, I did notice the character was using the fire staff techniques of one of the enemies he faced. Makes me wonder if one aspect is that some abilities are gained by defeating mini-bosses or even regular enemies. Either way, really interesting.
“This isn’t like, Devil May Cry” proceeds to deflect arrows on some dante type foolery
The mark of low IQ beast It was just the irony man lol
Do you know how hard it is to come out with something that has not been seen before? Most games have aspects from other games but it's usually done slightly different.
@@12tranoke51 exactly...none will care if you rip off something if you add in in the concept of it.....otherwise if you are just a rip off one can simply play the original...this game has elements of sekiro, star wars and monster hunter which all are GREAT games...so yeah, rip them off GOOD Wukong because this looks freaking GOOOOD
@Help Me Forget about FF6 remake. Not happening.

If you steal from one person , you're a thief.
If you steal from a hundred people, you're being original

My Rx 570 went "You want to play this at 1080p 60fps, LMAO"
Just recently I've been watching the 1986 Chinese TV series The Journey West (which most say is the most accurate adaptation of the novels), so I'm definitely in a Sun Wu Kong state of mind right now XD
If the final product is anywhere near as good as what they showed here, I'll gladly give them my money and personal data
Lol & personal data😅😂😂😂 I caught that lmfao
@@TheArtOfKrieg then there's Witcher 3 and Aliens colonial marines...
@@TheDRexor not familiar with the second game, but are you saying they were good in pre-alpha or bad?
This looks super promising, just have to wait and see how secure it is
Im gonna buy if there is no spyware added
Quite a while for an actual Sun Wukong game instead of "inspired from"
Sometimes, you just need to go back to the root you know
Yeah cause everyone was holding back waiting for the actual game to come out from it's country of origin instead.
@Marin Morg the character is cool, we're talking about a whole game
have you read the story, it's not the best blueprint for an action game.
@Joe Alexander The planet*
@@tehevilengineer7939 I haven't read it, but I'm curious, what makes you think it wouldn't lend itself to an action game?
Very authentic and gorgeously and beautifully made! Very movement is so so so so so so smoooooth! ♥♥♥ We cannot wait, we want SON WUKONG, WE WANT HIM RIGHT NOW! ^^^^
God of War scale battles
Dynasty Warriors full scale army fighting
Sun Wukong was the first to do all of these things.
Good video, and Im super excited for the game
This game is definitely PS5 material
Me too. This is like 'triple A' games companies saying "Nobody likes single player games anymore"(meaning they don't like them because they cant continuously generate cash from them) and indie devs saying "We'll see about that!" Great news for the industry imo and I wish them well🤞👍😎
