Abandoned 1962 GMC Farm Truck Engine! Will it run?!? Vintage 305 V6 Saved From the Scrap Yard!

- A local retired farmer was scrapping what was left of a 1962 GMC 2 ton truck so I had to snag up what was left! I'd never had a GMC V6 before so this was the perfect opportunity! I'm not sure when it was run last but it fired right up and ran amazingly!

I inherited a ‘68 GMC 2500 from my grandfather with a 305 v6. Sat in his yard over 20 years under a carport. Carb was seized but after soaking it, I just put it back on and the truck fired up without touching the points, plugs or replacing the gas/varnish. That engine is a beast with the 4 speed.
Jeez! I never get away without touching the points!

Thanks a bunch Mark!
I'm glad you paid some attention to your best friend , he has been laying around watching you work all day .
He's always looking for a good ear rub!
I’ve got our old 66 gmc 4wd ranch truck with this engine in it. Absolute tank. These are one of the best engines ever made. The water pump pushes some ungodly amount of coolant making these things nearly impossible to overheat.
I didn't know there was a 305 V-6 !! And that V-12 set up sounds INSANE ! Lol. Wow
That, by far, is one of the best videos you've done. I'm so glad I found your channel. I lost it when you were back there slamming gears and then sparks were flying. LOL!!! Those 305 v6's are some of GM's best work. Loyal as hell and tougher than my wife's meatloaf. Hey to Duff
Hahaha I dunno that this is the best! I had a good time doing it tho!! Then again, I'm always having a good time. Remind me to not come over for Mrs. Lauster's on meatloaf night!! Thanks again Paul!

I like to have a good time and glad you enjoyed it good sir!
I only found out like last year that GM made these big v6 engines. Very cool to see one run. What I've been told about them they weren't very efficient but massive amounts of torque. I reckon you could say that about alot of engines from that era.
They were reliable I've been told but not a powerhouse!
Gobs of low-end torque. This baby would pull a house off its foundation and then some. They were a workhorse to say the least. This was the smallest big block V6 in the lineup.
Thank you for the video.
My pleasure! Thanks a ton for hangin out!
That was cool as hell I've never seen somebody start an engine on the ground before

I’ve got a 1954 ford 239, and a 54 256. Still have one of the trucks they came out of. My plan was to build a couple running engine stands and just crank them up every once in a while , but I’ve got gravel floor in the barn so not like I can roll them around. And they take up a lot of room
All kinds of goodies! I wish I had room for all the junk I drag home!

Hello from Canada
That thing sounded beastly for a v6, loved how you revved the piss out of it.
Well you gotta break them in right!!
I remember the (Herlcues) 305 Cubic Inches V6 from 1962 the first generation , were in GMC , Chevrolet 1/2 ton , 5/8 ton heavy duty 1/2 ton, 1 ton , 3/4 ton pickup with Automatic of Power Glide 2 speed or 3 speed Automatic transmission, Manual transmission 3 in tree plus Floor shifter with 3 or 4 foward gears , 303 to 410 rear end gears! How found out these was friend of family had 1962 Chevrolet 25 the 3/4 ton single cab truck doors with 410 rear end gears and Manual Transmission on 3 in tree ! Then Auto Mechanics classes in High School a teacher explain about them to and showed in 1962 Pickup truck had too also fun ! Those motors were Orange in color , 2 hand choke , on valve covers decals said Hercules and there minus 2 front cylinders of 409 CC V8 motor too plus same hp and torque!

These old motors are the best for balance , Last one I fired up like this was a 283 it sat on the pan and vibrated like a blueprinted motor on the floor unsupported Rare .

Duff the crime dog is always on high alert anytime these rusted relics are about to be fired up. He remembers back when that piston let loose and came through the block and damn near took his head off while sleeping....😂😂jk, but probably could be some truth to it.
That dog has seen some thing in his days!!! His great grandpa McGruff was something else!
Back in 77 I bought a 62 GMC it had the 305 and three on the tree. The 305 burned oil and wasnt a fast High RPM engine. So I swapped in a 300 Hp 327. Couldnt keep those stock 318 muncie transmissions together. So I swapped in a Granny 4 speed. I still own the old 62 truck. ten years later I put a set of rings in the V6 and put it in a 69 dump truck that had a blown apart 351 V6. It made a good truck but used too much gas.
That's awesome you still own the GMC after all these years!

Good work. I'm impressed that you can figure ways to make things work together that weren't ever meant to on a tight budget. You're an inspiration for me to get back to my own pickup restoration project. I'd go with a checker plate aluminum flat bed (with stake pockets for removeable side boards and tie down rail) with headache rack, removeable ramps, fifth wheel for gooseneck trailer. Haul 2 clunkers at a time if you needed to.

I rebuilt 2 of the 305 V6's years ago for a friend of mine that as far as I know is still using them. The internals on those things look like they should be used in a diesel engine. They are low horsepower high torque engines that will if properly maintained will run for ever. Both engines I rebuilt had the plaid valve covers
They are a beefy V6 for sure!

Glad we can keep ya entertained!
I owned a 1963 GMC CarryAll factory 4x4, back in the day. The 305 V6 is a real stump puller. Full pull at 1600 RPM. An interesting fact about the 'plaid' valve covers. AS I understand, they pulled engines off the line QC inspection and tolerances, etc. GMC also made changes throughout the production run. The plaid coves were in stalled to identify these engines as being modified thru the production run. The plaid covers came from shelf paper, again, as I understand. Enjoy!
I'd love to find a set for the wall!

Ive owned several V6 GMC engines. Even had a Truck tractor with a 478 Toro Flow Diesel V6. Those 305s will really pull had one in a single axle dump truck and it could outpull a Ford that had a 361 engine. The bad thing is they are Low RPM engines and guzzle gas like about 4MPG in a 2 ton truck.

Had a close association with a 305 in a 5 ton GMC truck. Two things, I know for sure. They don't get good mpg's and they are not bad in an early 60's GM pickup. You can forget about slipping the clutch. They sound different. When you shut them down it takes a while for the oil to drain back to the pan. W ell maybe it was four things
