  • Description Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen is the Anthony W. and Lulu C. Wang Curator of American Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and will bring to light the stained-glass windows in St. Andrew’s Dune Church, the picturesque, red-shingled 1879 structure nestled among the dunes in Southampton. Extensive research has resulted in a number of new attributions and discoveries. The diverse assemblage ranges from opalescent-glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany and John La Farge to Pre-Raphaelite-inspired panes by the British firm Heaton, Butler & Bayne to lushly colorful windows by Bostonian Wilbur Herbert Burnham, and, coming full circle, to the contemporary artist Stephen Hannock’s opalescent-glass landscape window, installed in 2020. The windows will be discussed in terms of their artistry and history, highlighting the often poignant stories of those individuals the windows memorialize. As such, they are indelibly connected to the history of Southampton, while at the same time they chronicle a history of stained glass in America.

Fascinating details. I never was able to look that closely at this when attending a service at the Dune Church.
