His childhood story actually made me cry. Why adopt a child if you're not going to love him like he deserves?
Money. Disturbing but true
I ask that question every time I hear a story like this
JazzyJames33 maybe, but there are most likely records confirming these things; he did have to go to the doctor, after all.
The parents were deeply disturbed/deranged too. Abuse inherits.
Why? Because they wanted to live out a power fantasy. They were just as mentally unstable as he was, and so they wanted someone they could control and warp into the very monster that they were.
His 'parents' are perfect examples of people who shouldn't have the responsibility of being parents.
Almightymegs I'm glad they no longer have the responsibility of living. I'm sure they are burning in hell now for what they did.
Killers are made not born. These bastards deserve to die.
Almightymegs and someone ( your mom) who raises a child to be comfortable judging others an acting as God is😕
@@julz3tt3 killers can be born. Mental illness can strike at any age. Abuse just tends to exacerbate latent issues and can turn people down a dark path.
@@dontdiscriminatehateeveryo9263 god is in hell he killed people I hate ur fucking username. Ur a brain washed idiot who thinks we have freedom in this damn country
I wouldn't be surprised if the hammer to the head did a lot more damage than what is lead to be
@@doyouliketacosiliketacos5139 its common too like how the guy who surivived a pipe threw the brain ended up becoming a party maniac the oppisite of his original personality
@bruh it's the age old argument of nature vs nurture. Would he had anti social personality disorders with out the abuse? Maybe but that solid blow to his head and his abuse definitely didn't help and would have exacerbated any potential mental issues he may have had otherwise.
It probably brought hes IQ down
@@wilmagregg3131 Youre thinking of Phineas Gage, who had a metal spike shot through his frontal lobe. The damage to his frontal lobe caused him to act erratically and spontaneously, because part of his brain was legitimately gone. The shoemaker is different because if anything he would've suffered a bit of brain damage, so it's unlikely that he would have lost his frontal lobe
@@PoptartChris what about those rare cases of people suffering blunt force head trama and learning new skills while lsoing access to old ones?
I read a biography of his life and this man showed so many signs of mental illness in which he would hallucinate, feared his own genitalia, and find comfort in bathing in blood. His adoptive parents destroyed this mans chances of having a normal life
Yea all this is crazy! He acted like he was taught honestly since his ppls put all this in his head n did it to him. He killed young boys cuz he was raped by them. Your definitely not born this way, ur taught n this is a PERFECT EXAMPLE
Which biography?
@@itsjustthefantes9789 I'm not saying saying what he went through wasn't terrible, because it was, but its not an excuse. A lot of people go through that and dont become serial killers, there is help out there and other healthy ways to confront it. It doesnt matter what happened to him in the past, it is no excuse to hurt other people
@@assesseddavid2895 everyone is different plus he had no one help him
@@assesseddavid2895 he was just sick! Mentally unstable.
I mean i know that they are serial killers but the way he was brought up just shows that a killer is not born, it is made
Bohemian Rhapsody it's really a mix between sociological factors & the environment & sometimes genes
Bohemian Rhapsody I don't agree if he was brought up by different foster parents he would be ok
It definitely makes you wonder! If he had been brought up in a loving home, all the lives that would have been spared . That is why I don't believe in the saying that "everything happens for a reason"
Yeah, if we refer to epigenetics, it could be argued that his schizophrenia was caused by his awful childhood. Sometimes genetics will only express themselves after the right conditions are meant.
Bohemian Rhapsody It's obviously both, some killers are born that way and others are abused, tortured and turn into a killer.
I know it's weird, but I actually feel sorry for Joseph, it sounds like he never got the psychological help he really needed.
After watching this series I feel sorry for many serial killers. (Not that they shouldn't pay for their crimes), But they seem to have gone through horrific stuff by the people who are supposed to be raising them to be good people.
Steve Scutt it makes you think, what if he would have got the help he needed long before he ever did anything
Steve Scutt + I felt that way about Aileen Wuornos
Steve Scutt He's a psychopathic con artist...who cut the genitals off little boys...
Who cares about his "poor upbringing"...
He's a monster...
Steve Scutt - Unfortunately during this time period, it just wasn't widely available and not like the services we have today. Back in the old days this kind of stuff wasn't talked about.
And many serial killers that were born during this era that all came from similar backgrounds never had any psychiatric intervention.
I'm not surprised this guy became a serial killer...
i opened the video like
"here we go, another dude who was abused by cuntbags."
:D
Atlantisqueenx same it’s sad but not surprising
It is to me, but I have pastors in the family and we hear all sorts of things those kids survived without posing their humanity. Its nature and nurture.
C Abarub those pastors are the ones doing the abusing my friend
Pretty much
You should talk about Ian Huntley. He killed 2 school girls and then campaigned to find their murderer and became a family friend of their parents.
Katie Wall that's fucked up
Katie Wall smart thing to do. May look suspicious, if not done right
Katie Wall I remember that on the news. I was barely ten years old and at my nan's when that was plastered all over BBC news. He even spoke to the camera people in regards to the search.
David Spring yeah I've watched the interview he did and even the interviewer seemed suspicious, he just kept repeating that he was the last person to see them and asking questions about it.
lunamaybelater he dumped their clothes in his place of work and actively told people he was the last to see them which wasnt very smart
Can we just turn humanity off and back on again?
PastelMagpie + like a reboot?
Just wait, the Volgons will do it for us.
even ctrl-z can't fix whats been a typo for so long
Para Momal I'll take anything at this point.
If you were to believe the content of the bible, you would see that it would be pointless.
i usually dont sympathize serial killers..but he really had a shitty childhood. i feel bad for him
i think his childhood made him mentally insane
@jayant kumar soren True, but this one was especially brutal
@Joe Andujar leave her alone just kidding
Amanda Rodriguez yeah but still he was born in Philly, Pennsylvania....that man was born in my state *grrrrrr*.....but yeah poor kid he had a really terrible childhood.
The human perspective usually does that to us. Sadly he was a victim as much as he was a killer.
I feel so bad for him, he was so sad and desperate to make friends that he stole money to bribe people to be his friend! Those parents were horrible and were the cause of all of this havoc!
Still doesn’t let u do the shiat he did
or he stole just because he is a rebellious thief
this is why i hate mental health services, how can a person been in and out of inpatient hospital so many times and not have any professionals working there notice there's been serious psychological damage?
There was a stigma against mental health really, cause back then, why would you seek help for _feelings_?
*Apologies for no on cam parts this episode. Doing some construction on my studio, so it's unfit to do video in right now. But it'll be back soon. In the meantime, I hope you've enjoyed this episode!*

Rob Dyke Rob, the maximum video quality level is coming up on Android RUclips player as 360p, is that intentional?
Rob Dyke I always enjoy these.. I love to watch as I fall asleep.
Rob Dyke well I can't watch it then...jk
these serial killer files videos always make me feel so sad because I'd say pretty much 9 times out of 10 the killer is abused in childhood and sure they may have had a genetic predisposition to becoming a killer but the likelihood is that the abuse was a large factor in the occurrence of mental illness and I just feel like it's such a shame because they could have had such a nicer life if their parents had just been decent and done their job as a parent :(
I agree 100%
We seem to need a certification, degree, or some other type of license in all jobs in life...but the biggest job, being a parent, requires none. These two monsters had no right to adopt any child, if they had been assessed they would have failed.
same.
S
The other 1/10 times is a a strict religious upbringing causing this, often combined with more types of abuse.
That poor son of his... being forced to abuse and kill people...

That amazing intro makes me forget this is a series about blood-thirsty murderers.
MercuryDjinn3 It really does.

It's great. As were the two before.
It definitely gets the audience's attention
I always thought my small town of Lindenwold didn't have a thing of note to it. Apparently, there was a serial killer here. Thanks for that, Rob
The Illuminati You're the Illuminati! How didn't you know
The Illuminati He traveled from Bucks County, PA to N J. Shop was located in Feasterville.
Ik this is a year old but i used to live in lindenwold when i was younger and hearing that shook me a bit
Has anyone researched is his behavior drastically changed after receiving the hammer strike to the head?
I've done a lot of research on probation era gangsters and one had a serious head injury. His personality drastically changed, he started doing very sadistic, dangerous, criminal things...he was sent to jail. While there he was diagnosed with schizophrenia, which we now know is genetic. You can't get it from a serious blow to the head. But you'd be amazed how many people have had serious head traumas and where diagnosed as schizophrenic.
I come from an abusive home. Some of the things this man endured as a child I did too. I was in a battered woman's shelter pretty early in life. But my mom went back toy dad. The cycle of abuse tends to repeat itself. I know I, as any other human being, am capable of horrible things. But I refuse to victimize another living creature as I'd be just like my father.
Abuse and torture are something one can never get over from, most people repeat the cycle.
Sin Dooley. I hope lifes kinder to you now
I was also abused as a child and was taken into foster care at the age of 5. I was never able to stay in a home for very long though. So just know your not alone. I vowed I would break the cycle of abuse as well. I took a long time and a lot of pain for things to get better but they eventually did. I’m 18 now. My life has been hard, but things are getting better. I hope it helps to know your not alone and that things will get better.
The book called "the shoemaker" it very detailed and descriptive about Joseph's life
The killer's kid left the state and his whereabouts are unknown. He could even live in the same neighborhood as me and I don't even know it.
That Random Guy your laughing because of your profile pic
I was horrified by that part.. why was he allowed to go free!?
Or be commenting about this video.
he went to jail, did his time, what more do you want lmao
Serving time doesn't rehabilitate people with this kind of psychological damage.
Most of the serial killers have had fucked up childhood and then there's Jeffrey Dahmer!
Nivya Prakruti some are born wanting to kill because something is wrong with their brain, they have little to no empathy. Some are made into killers, sadly.
ReviewDykeUSA that's a lie! We are born a blank sheet. Children are innocent it's adults that twist them!
Nivya Prakruti His parents flat out deny any abuse, but I'm certain something must have been done to him by a family member, neighbour, stranger, teacher or classmate :/
Lula Alder I remember reading he used to cut open animals when he was kid..
Nivya Prakruti Very true! But in terms of abuse, there may have been some. They say it's a cross-over between sexual development and violence, so somewhere around puberty, but who knows. It's not commonly disputed that an individual (especially a child) would be so without an environmental trigger, but should this be an exception, then Dahmer would be a prime example of nature over nurture. His parents, if knowing of something, seem to want to hide it forever, but hopefully the truth will come out.
Joseph's parents deserve to have their tongues torn out for telling him at the tender age of six that the doctors had 'fixed his little bird' . They set him out on a life of paranoia and were totally responsible for all that followed .
My mom also tried to burn my hands on the stove once because I stole $20 from my cousin. I was only 7 tho :/ not justifying it but I personally would never do that to my future children
Mom deserves some not so fun Shiz.
His crimes are inexcusable, but you have to feel a little bit bad for the psychos that have awful childhoods. It's hard not to wonder what they'd have been like if they had grown up in normal enviornments.
Easy for you to say ,if you know biblically demons can easy manipulate and possess your mind to pure evil to the ones who been mentally abused . Look in to it it seems like mental problems in reality but its spiritual mind controlling from these demons.

Does anyone else not get creeped out by these? I just get really fascinated with what makes serial killers tick and act the way they do
(By the way I don't mean this to say that Robs videos aren't scary or anything it's just the way I think)
TwentyØneAttackØnTheCrybabies I get creeped out when he ends it like he does here, that Michael changed his name, moved out of state and no one has seen him since. I mean, I get he was under the control of his serial killer father, but being exposed to that mindset, potentially having a predisposition to schizophrenia, yeah.. I'd like to make sure he isn't my neighbor, or that I have warning first
TwentyØneAttackØnTheCrybabies I don't. I find it intriguing to know about murderers I never knew and what they went through and what their possible motives are. It could be because my Aunt was murdered at a young age before I was born that intrigues me about their motives
TwentyØneAttackØnTheCrybabies they tick and act just like all of us. youve thought of killing someone one way or another at some point. the difference is...they turned their murderous thought into action whereas we have kept it just a thought.
pyledog + true but it would be most likely killing someone we knew out of hurt/anger/revenge. Not random/innocent strangers who have done us no personal harm.
[Insert generic "why am I watching this at night" remark]
After watching a lot of the serial killer files I realize that mostly everyone I watched was traumatized at a young age which lead to them being they way they are, it’s quite sad really
So nice to get some creepy Rob Dyke. Your Seriously Strange series is the reason I subscribed, and it's one of the few youtube series I watch on a regular basis. I was worried that you weren't going to continue the creepy stuff after two weeks without a creepy episode, but luckily there's Cayleigh to fill the creepy gap in your absence, I can't wait for the next one.

Great video as always Rob. Thank you for the continued work you do!
Im confused as to how he got the nickname "The Shoemaker" I mean aside from his childhood training to become a cobbler. With a name like The Shoemaker, you would think he made shoes out of the skin of his victims or something.
He was a very highly regarded cobbler and a lot of his delusions had to do with "fixing people" through orthopedic shoes and inserts.
Honestly this video doesn't even BEGIN to delve into his mind.
So the son is still out there.... super...
god, I feel bad for this guy, he never had a childhood. of course his mind would be fucked up.

Rob, this coming from arguably your biggest fan!
We need more episodes on Serial Killer files and Twisted Tens, and if you run out of Serial Killers to cover for episodes, probably a few of us can turn into one, in order to provide you more content. :P
You're the best anyways and we miss Joopis's arts.
Mohit Philip I take it your on his patreons list then if your his biggest fan
Yay! I know Rob can do whatever he wants with his channel, but these serial killer files are the reason I subbed to his channel. It's great to see another one. Thanks Rob!
This is one of the saddest stories I've ever heard. People have the opportunity to overcome their horrible childhood traumas and make a positive difference in the world, especially with their own families. Unfortunately Joseph's mind and heart warped from his own twisted sense of entitlement, which involved hurting other people even worse than he was hurt. Imagine your only legacy to be inflicting a tremendous amount of pain upon others. I have a hard enough time living with mistakes I have made without something like that hanging over my head. Such a tragedy. I'm glad they were caught, because they were fixing to be prolific serial killers. I hope Michael chose another way.
1,000 years as a butterfly 😂
Good job on the editing Paul.
Uses his kid as a helping hand. That's so messed up
they killed his other son. that's even more messed up.

Glad to see you're back Rob c:
I always feel so very sad watching the parts where they were children. It is honestly so sad and devastating that they treated him that way. It makes me so mad how anyone could do that to a little boy. If half of these killers recieved love from their families they would not have turned into killers. Its so so sad.
Good stuff Rob, thanks for posting!

I love these! I also miss your story narrations... will Neptune's Fancy ever be finished?
As always, well done Rob. 🙌🏼
Can we just make this a TV show already?!
Tragic. Sometimes you can actually understand why people end up like this. It doesn’t make it right, but it also doesn’t make you hate them, which for me is rare with these killer stories.
My father was his psychologist for one year. He said kalllinger never lied. He was cooperative....and quite bright
No way are you being serious???
You are my hero Rob. Keep up the good work!!
My name is Joseph so i was just like "Hey! Das me!" I put myself in his perspective and now im sad
This is so atrocious. How can the court allow the defendant stand trial if he is diagnosed schizophrenic? That is a lack of moral responsibility. I feel horrible for all the victims of Joseph, but no one was a worser victim than the killer himself. How the hell did the Kallingers be allowed to adopt him? Why couldn't any of his teachers see his, I don't fucking know, maybe his difference in appearance with marks on his body, or his interaction with other students or within the classroom? I can't even get mad or stay upset with Joseph about his mental instability or actions afterwards. Do I think his actions were horrifying and wrong, yes. Do I also think that he was mentally disturbed, absofuckinglutely.
The times were different back then. It was normal to beat your kids, and no one batted an eye at what we now consider child abuse. Also, people who are schizophrenic are all around you. They have jobs, go to school, and act like totally normal people in public. Not everyone with schizophrenia is "insane," and he was clearly intelligent and sane enough to hold down a job and have a family, as well as sane enough to have rational thoughts. You have to be really fargone to be considered insane by the courts, and simply having a mental illness doesn't mean you fit into that category.
I agree with your statement about there are schizophrenics everywhere. At the same time, he had obviously shown through his actions that he wasn't coherent of everything that he was doing. To those who are able to handle life on a normal scale, that's commendable, but this guy unfortunately wasn't one of them.
Love the new intro! The intensity gave me goose bumps! :)
This will probably be lost in the comments but, your channel is so fucking amazing. The way you execute every episode is extremely professional, not to mention the editor and the artist ( truly beautiful work guys!!) This may seem like a random compliment, but I've been bingeing your videos and it's hard to not comment on the evolution of your channel. It's so amazing to witness the progress you're making. Thank you for the videos, they truly make life more mysterious.
fuck dude, this was sad, i feel bad but i still like it, thanks rob and everyone else who helped with the production
I was raped at three by my cousin sexually abused by my priest at ten, beaten by my dad often, he held my hands over the flames on the stove because I had no toys and was playing with my mom's Bobbie pins . My mom an angry woman would make me kneel on uncooked rice while she read the Bible at me..sent to military school at ten was my only relief...rather than kill them as they made me angry, I chose forgiveness..
Eric Rivers so sorry that happened to you, you are such a blessing❤️❤️
Eric Rivers you should've beaten them down put them both kneeling on rice, then got them to read scripture about respect and repentance. Only then when you heard their repentance get them to read scripture about forgiveness, then forgive them and walk away.
As for the rapist they are all condemned in the bible to have a millstone tied around their necks and cast into the sea.
Pedophiles cannot be forgiven in this life.
Sorry man, but I had a similar upbringing and I still want to hurt the people who did this to me. You are resilient I'll give you that. That is a trait I don't have, but if it was between me and giving out the punishment they deserve, I'd beat them within an inch of their lives without remorse. Forgiveness can kiss my ass.
