My favorite were between the jutte and the very thin knife carried in the scabbard. They were the most unique IMO. The vengeance and folding shuriken were my favorite for modern use.

From my own research into the subject of shuriken, their primary use was as a distraction much more than to inflict mortal wounds. The bo shuriken (throwing spikes), were a legitimate weapon of the samurai - they could be drawn in combat with swords and the threat of a small spike flying at your face could cause a flinch, making enough of an opening in the opponent's defenses for the far more serious katana. Very close range stuff to create a distraction, gain space, gain time. They could also be used in hand to hand combat, held in the hand as a stabbing instrument, choked up on them and pressed into pressure points or used in various trapping techniques. The 'stars' used by the ninja were often either carpentry tools (nail pullers made for the classic 4 sided piece with curved sides that got sharpened and a square hole in the center and could be thrown with enough accuracy they could inflict mortal cuts, actually deadly) and other forms of 'stars' were used in wood joints in building construction and often simply pilfered from temples. The mystically oriented ninja traditionally might carry a magical number of 9 of these, tied together in a staggered row and worn on the outside of the offhand forearm where they could double as some armoring in warding off any blows. They would be thrown at people pursuing them as a distraction. No doubt they were poisoned from time to time but not regularly because the user of the star shuriken could cut themselves with one just as easily (poisons were more apt to be applied to bamboo splinters that would hold more of the poison and shot from little blow guns or even buried in the bristles of a writing brush and just administered with a jab). But they carried a psychological impact that such things don't really have today - they knew tetanus in Japan back then and a rusty, thin little bit of metal thrown at you by some peasant farmer could be pretty scary, give one pause to consider how much the pursuer actually wanted to risk in catching this person. Tetanus is a pretty hideous way to go, not exactly a warrior's glorious end. They didn't have to be poisoned.
Throwing kunai? We have Hollywood to thank for that, especially 'The Expendables'. They had many uses, known as 'remover of obstacles', but rarely thrown. They could be driven between rocks in castle walls or into tree trunks to aid in climbing, used for digging, used as a breaching tool, prying open doors or breaking locks, maybe even in hand to hand combat as a stabbing instrument or just a club. They were big, heavy, much to carry around with you but a ninja could carry one of those without arousing any suspicion when they couldn't get away with carrying a sword or knife.
As Master Jakub pointed out, you throw it and you no longer have it to use. :-/
Master Jakub throws the bo shuriken as i learned, only prettier. But not to cling to any special form. Adam, you certainly do well enough with your own technique. But if you practiced a bit with Master Jakub's style, i think you'd find it offers just a fuzz better accuracy.
Master Jakub has a very nice collection there but if i have to pick and choose, i think the little blades, the kogatanas, are my favorites and they have historically certainly been thrown but people would tended to make those *really* fancy, even spending more on them than on their katanas, was an every day use sort of thing they tended to make really special and personalized and could be hard to throw away. But you would almost always have one on you. i didn't see any kiridashi, the little woodworking/craft knives, those would work too. Stuff that has more than one possible use, isn't going to raise suspicions and doesn't weigh a ton if you have to carry it any distance would likely appeal to me over specialized throwing instruments. If i'm going to throw it away, i wouldn't want to spend a fortune on it either. But that's just me; other people in other circumstances could well have very different priorities.

I loved watching this as I own many styles of these creatures. Of course I am best with the large stars and have commented on them before. Almost weightless little stars, and little knives, are a waste of money. a Samuri would have been better off throwing a handful of small nails as a distraction. I must comment that most difficult are the shriken that Master Jacob slides from his palm to the target in an effortless manner. Those double pointed devils I have tried to get the best of but they never cooperate. I would like to know how many years the Master has practiced those. For those interested, sporting goods stores sell very large nails as tent pegs. I bought a bunch in two different sizes and found them easy to handle in a short amount of time. They are also easy to make sharper. Be well my friend.
