I kinda wanna watch the first movie with the disco soundtrack now.
Yeah, that would be a fun re-editing project. (Which is way over my head, haha.)
"I find your lack of boogie oogie oogie disturbing."
It would be pretty fun to see a version of SW with these disco tracks. We could even call it the disco-cut.
You might enjoy @auralnauts
Release the disco cut!
@@elperronimo it's called "Larry"
I loved lucas's nonchalant explanation to mark hamil for why he introduces vader the way he did: "Hes a tall, imposing guy in a black suit on a white background. Play some scary music and they'll get the idea."
I got that disco album for Christmas when I wanted the real soundtrack. 45 years later, it still hurts 😭😭😭😭😭😭
I think it rules. Sure, I prefer the actual score for the movie, but I wouldn't mind watching a version with the Disco tracks.
I feel a bit offended. I like disco. The album is good. The music video for guardians of the galaxy 2 spoof the promo for it.
Return of the jedi had a disco song (Lapti Nek) that was replaced in the remaster.
I usually play christmas in the stars during the holidays.
Zardu Hasselfrau!
Love love LOVE Meco. If anybody wants anything spooky and pretty rare for Halloween this year, he did an album that was all weird remixes based on An American Werewolf in London. The score was either never officially released or so limited that you can't even find it these days, but he did some interesting work based heavily on the score. Really good stuff! Unironically good!
The Meco theme made it into one of the Lego Star Wars games. There’s an easter egg where you build a dance floor (complete with disco ball), and a bunch of characters come out to dance to it.
I remember the first time I heard the disco Star Wars theme was on starwars Rogue Squadron III Rebel Strike
What an interesting bit of film/music history. Thanks!
I know many probably disagree, but as someone who absolutely adores John Williams' work, I think Meco's first Star Wars disco is a genuinely great cover of the film's original score.
On the topic, if you want another ultra-70s take on Star Wars music, look for Don Ellis' cover of the main theme from his album "Music From Other Galaxies And Planets." (It's on YT.) He was a fairly popular jazz-funk musician in the 60s and 70s, and it's certainly a unique take on the material. It also has a smokey muted trumpet rendition of Leia's theme, like something out of a noir movie.
(Sadly, this is his weakest album by far. It was his last, and his earlier stuff was downright brilliant.)
Space dandy? I would love the disco theme!
No Meco slander shall be tolerated here
All I can think of is that SNL skit with Bill Murray singing “Star Waaaars, nothing but Star Waaaaaars!”
this was an experience i didnt know i needed...
very strange indeed but confusingly fun
Disco would have vastly improved Star Wars, you fool
If you like this album, check out David Matthew’s Dune, an album that also came out in ‘77 featuring jazz and disco songs inspired by the Frank Herbert book. One song on the album is a cover of David Bowie’s Space Oddity, and its guitar solo was sampled to be the main riff in MF DOOM’s Rapp Sntich Knishes
He wants something timeless, emotional, powerful? Somebody get that John Williams fella on the horn!
For anyone who want to listen to what inspired a lot of the music to Star Wars, and especially the Vader Theme should have a listen to the Planets by Gustav Holst and especially Mars, The Bringer of War.
I mean, John Williams straight-up stole from The Planets and Kings’ Row; it’s kind of insane how similar a lot of it sounds- well, because he took a whoooolle lot of “inspiration” from it.
I wonder if we could call those imitators the earliest forms of nerdcore
I'd settle for Star Wars using some kind of mid-70s German Progressive Rock soundtrack tbh
Have you ever seen the old German sci-fi TV show Raumpatrouille (Space Patrol)? It's late 60s rather than 70s, but Peter Thomas's space jazz soundtrack is really amazing and does have some krautrock-ish elements.
First single I ever bought from Woolworths.
The cantina band disco track is actually pretty awesome
I had a dream one night several months ago that comedian Emo Phillips was the voice of Darth Vader. now THAT would be a helluva alternate version of star wars
I prefer the Empire Strikes Back disco song over the first.
Ah, so that is what inspired the bizzare GOTG2 "Guardians Inferno" video.
I actually own this on vinyl, though had never actually played it. Bought it solely for the artwork at the time, but the tracks kinda slap
I still have that Meco album on an 8-track tape!
Meco is awesome. I love that album.
We’re getting closer to Defuntland TV history
70s audiences were right because these bop
Damn, now I want a retro OVA in the style of Ursei Yatsuba but it's the Original Trilogy.
*Urusei Yatsura
I get some lupin III vibes
It seems like we have different tastes because that slaps.
That slaps my entire bod.
This dude was RUclips fan covers decades before RUclips.
Well SW did happen “A long time ago……” Timeless classical music was the smart move!
'ruined' is a harsh word elkman.
If you want incredible sci-fi with disco music as the soundtrack just watch the first Gundam series :)
"The Visitor" is a 1979 Italian sci-fi/horror flick with a downright amazing funk/eurodisco soundtrack. The movie itself is kind of a cult classic too, a bizarre mashup of The Omen and Close Encounters of the Third Kind which has no right to be as entertaining as it is.
How about some Space Dandy
Personally I think the movie should have had disco in it
I am always on the hunt for interesting covers, the best is when they juml genre. Thanks.
I'm so happy to see in the comments the love for these funk versions of SW soundtrack I thought I might be alone in enjoying.
I've been aware of them from 2020
Tbh my respect for John Williams dropped just a little when I heard he snubbed this kind of thing out. Like, it really doesn't ruin your original version for someone to make a disco version.
I have a sealed copy of that Christmas record, had no idea Bon Jovi was on it
Interesting! Incidentally I wish they didn't change Lapti Nek from RotJ, apparently it was too disco. 🤷♂
I think you mean IMPROVED
the disco version slaps tho
Put it this way, it may be "naff" but it miles better than the ep 7-9
I really want to see that put on Star Wars.
Man these songs BANG
So many bangers on this one
To be Honest, I really dislike everything disney did with Star Wars .... It's soulless, repeating plots but now with bad actors, bad directors and super bad writing.
Every day I ask myself, WTF George Lucas sold that to disney.
Reminds me of any 80s Jackie Chan movie soundtrack
well-read, insightful and true
Disco ain’t dead.
Meco was fucking great
Im still waiting for "The day World of Warcraft died" :')
They're kinda cool honestly.
Would love to know your thoughts on Andor
Good stuff 😃
such a good video. i was transfixed
I was going to say something similar happened to 2001: A Space Odyssey, but then I remembered you already did that. 😁
Eh, in the Cantina it kind of works IMHO.
Meco was great
I'm glad they didn't do disco for the whole thing, but they should have kept Lapti Nek.
Instead it turns out it was disney!
The next block of films will be musicals.
your wrong. this would be a far bolder more fun soundtrack
Dont give Disney ideas its decayed enough The smell wont ho Away
Obviously you don't dance fight.
(AuralNaughts)
Don't forget Bill Murray's version 😁 ruclips.net/video/ljiVRV5B5i8/видео.html
And then we got another company starting with Di that yeah...this is so sad.
Just move on already. It’s pathetic. Make your own Star Wars
Ok, I retract my statement
I’d have to rewatch, but I thought there was disco SW theme in the shitass holiday special? Can anyone verify? I refuse to watch that movie unironically…
Disney decided to do what Disco couldnt, ruin star wars
. for the algorithm
*Madeitbetter
First
first
The disco version is fun but it doesn't work with the film at all. As usual, execs were wrong and Lucas was right
I legit love the disco track though *I listen to it all the time*
It really shows how much class John Williams has that he embraced these versions of his work, at least for a time.
And how much class he apparently lost, when he decided "no thanks, that's it".
My parents gave me the original SW soundtrack one year as a present and I played it absolutely nonstop, until my mother had to beg me to please, please, put on some cheesy holiday music instead. I sounded out everything on piano, and I learned a lot about the power of and construction of classic-style movie soundtracks from it--including the themes that weren't featured prominently in the movie itself.
That said, I wholeheartedly love the funky revamped disco version. Groovy, man. I'd totally hang out at to a cantina where that and the other disco songs are playing. Now I want to get all of these tracks.
Oh my god. I did not know this. Then again, at the time using a clasical score was going against thev grain: lots of Sci-Fi movies were using electronic "futuristic" scores or just contemporary styled music. I was 10 years old when I saw Star Wars in the theater and even I knew disco sucked.
I knew of Meco’s cover of the main theme, but I had no idea that the studio wanted to put disco on the soundtrack. That is hilarious! It reminds me of when Universal wanted Zemeckis and Gale to swap the De Lorean in BTTF for a Mustang so that they could do a product placement with Ford, and they responded by saying “Doc Brown doesn’t drive a f#%$&ing Mustang!” XD
In the 1970s, my brother and I loved playing with our Star Wars action figures while listening to our Meco Disco/Funk record. Great memories!
Lifelong Star Wars fan, house music producer, and analogue synthesiser manufacturer checking in here:
A) Star Wars And Other Galactic Funk ABSOLUTELY SLAPS.
B) It is the highest-selling album with prominent Buchla synthesizer, played by the beautiful and powerful Suzanne Ciani, who really should have been namechecked here since her sound design was such an important part of the album.
It gives me GREAT PLEASURE to remind Buchla fanboys that the most commonly-heard album with their favourite instrument was "the Meco Star Wars disco record." It always makes their head hurt.
IDK about anyone else, but the disco tracks sound fucking rad to me.
Could've been mixed better, maybe in need of a rematering.
Good album.
Also good video, but the clickbait title was a tad iffy.
He changed it now, fortunately.
IDC, that first Meco album was great. So, too, was his follow up interpretation of the CE3K soundtrack.
But, yeah, they did NOT belong in the movies.
Do a little dance
Make a little love
Star Wars tonight!
Star Wars tonight!
"Disco"? I remember that was a thing back in the 1970's. Saddle "Star Wars" with Disco? That would be a "one and done" thing, instead of the franchise that KK is doing everything to end. As with the Disco-flavored "Hooked on the Classics," there's "no breathing room" for the listener. You just keep jamming like a musical Gerbil, eventually fatigue-crashing into "Turn that endless loop Disco noise OFF!"
i had that MFing record. I bought it at TG&Y thinking it was the movie soundtrack. i was so excited, only to be sucker punched. I was 6, but no I’m not bitter.
They should have had Meco compose the Sy Snootles & Rebo Band music in ROTJ!
The disco versions slap hard, but the tone would be inappropriate for the movies. But they do slap hard tho.
It sounds like Shaftwars or UC Gundam.
I swear that Anthony Daniels bit sounded like an Auralnauts spoof.
i seriously want a fanedit of this music replacing the Williams score.
Star Wars disco slaps hard
woulda been good. woulda been beautiful. woulda saved disco
I want whatever that guy was on lol
that disco in the beginning was funny 😂
