Watercolor Painting BIGGEST Myths Debunked 😯
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 31 июл 2024
- With only one painting, I'll debunk the most common (and annoying) myths that we keep hearing when it comes to watercolor painting.
The goal of this lighthearted video is to remove guilt that "we're not doing it right", and restore confidence, so one can express their true potential with watercolors.

Thank you for making this video. I get so tired of other artists saying watercolor "should be loose and free" to be done right, don't use white, it's a difficult medium to learn, etc. Even really good watercolorists who paint loose know that the foundations are still knowing how to draw and paint with precision in order to venture beyond the normal boundaries with skill.
You made an extra good point there. I'm glad this video resonated 🙂
Great video! I get so tired of people telling me watercolor is so hard and unforgiving. I have never found that to be true, but people say it so much that I started to feeling I was doing it wrong!
Yes, it's freeing to forget about the preconceived ideas and just paint 🙂
I think an overworked watercolor is one where the colors become muddy and/or the paper has so many layers that luminosity was unintentionally lost. Your artwork is great!
Yes it's what I heard too as a result of the back and forth thing,, it's usually worse with complementary colors and then thankfully, we learn to avoid certain things happening from practicing 🙂
excellent 👌👌👌👌👌 explanation superb dimensions genius strokes wonderful brush control amazing 😍 details thankyou so much
One of my small painting may have looked overworked. I showed it to an artist. He looked at it and I don’t know what he thought of it but suggested- hmmm you will enjoy using gouache! He probably thought my watercolor work was not transparent enough, that i could use gouache? So I’m glad you think that overworking your work is not bad after all for everyone. Thanks and your work is amazing!
In his eyes, for his style, it seemed this way, and I'm glad this video helped in knowing we can do it otherwise 🙂 i find making one of those loose and light backgrounds with more details and layers to the main subject helps me balance the oppacity with something lighter. As many say, as long as we are enjoying what we do, the way we do it or what it looks like shouldn't matter to anyone but ourselves. Thank you for sharing your story 🙂
Thank you, Francoise. Loved watching you develop this painting and the contrast between detail and blurred is so beautiful. Remembering to take time to layer is one of the things I needed to learn and it makes such a difference, and is so helpful it getting the image to look the way you want it to.
I know, layering is the best for realism, I use it in all mediums. Thank you for giving me your thoughts on this 🙏
Thank u thank u thank u Painting and Chocolate....I feel so very much better x Your art never looks over worked to me, just perfect.....we r perfectionists x love Alli X
Thank you Alli 🙂 I love we can get good stuff out of perfectionism, like precision, and elegance, probably also so much more! Everyone has something magic in them, we just need to acknowledge and learn to make use of it.
I couldn’t agree more about using white gouache / white gel pens for highlights. It saves so much trouble and honestly can look better than the white of the paper. I also love to paint in toned paper sketchbooks (usually stillman and birn nova), and the way using white gouache makes objects leap off the page is something you just can’t do with plain white paper
Yes in cases it is so helpful! Lately I've been trying to keep whites more and it's an art in itself to do it so it looks good and realistic 🙂
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I agree with your views on pretty much all of this. I follow the philosophy that 'art is in the eye of the beholder' and 'rules' are made to be bent and sometimes broken. I'm also not creating to make 'art snobs' who have no open mind happy. So 'loose and free' or 'tight and controlled' or some style in between (or completely different) is all fine with me.
My thoughts on using white is that it should be done with purpose, not to cover up a lack of skill (fixing minor mistakes this way is fine with me). And if a master artist like John Singer Sargent used white with watercolors (sometimes quite thickly), then why is it not ok for others. 🤷♀
And as long as the result is not a muddy mess, I'm all for 'layering until it looks good' if that is a person's style. You are quite good with effectively using layers, I'm good at making mud but I'm working on improving😹.
Thank you for your insight on this 🙂 I need to check out the works of the artist you mentioned although the name is very familiar!
Well done. It's time these stupid myths were debunked and with a beautiful painting to prove it!
Yes 🙌
Thank you for this video. It is freeing my mind up a lot.
You're welcome, I'm glad it resonated and helps 😀
Thank you so much Francoise, such a helpful video :)
You're welcome ! 🙂
I paint realistic watercolors. I guess I overwork them all. Ha ha ha. Icall it layering and glazing.
Me too 🙂
Gorgeous!
Thank you !
I'm in on that overworked myth, I find so much joy in layering and realism but desperately trying to learn and do more loose pieces to no avail... Ahhh
What worked for me is doing the loose background and having fun with details on the main subject. Also trying not to make each stroke perfect. It's always a work in progress 🙂
I love your tutorials. X
Thank you Shirley, I appreciate it 🙂
Nice swan and good hints.
I'm glad this was helpful!
Totally loved the insight and the theory and debunking.
Was that a heat gun or a blow dryer you used for drying? So pleased you actually showed using it, instead of saying "let it dry or dry off your painting". This is so important for us visual learners.
Thank you for mentioning about the heat gun, and yes that is what I use.
Grazie 🙂
I’ve been painting with watercolor off and on for several years with mixed results. I got more serious last March, and I’ve made a lot of progress. However, you are bringing up things here that have frustrated me. I love realism, and I’ve been following along on Patreon with a wonderful artist, but I want to try some other things.
Skillshare sounds like where you show more of your basic techniques, and Patreon where you do more of your paintings. I want both, I think. I want to be able to feel more comfortable and confident with watercolor.
The only thing I don’t like about Skillshare is there’s too much, and I believe it’s a yearly subscription. I like that Patreon has a monthly plan. How many Skillshare tutorials do you have? I’m thinking about what I should do. Thanks.
Hi Anne, yes about the difference between Skillshare and Patreon, except Skillshare now offers monthly subscriptions and you can try it free through my link in the video description. Also, on my website, you will see a clear detail of all classes and also all Patreon tutorials. I hope this helps!
as a pencil artist im struggling with the same thing ( on a beginners level for me)
And it's even tougher then because you might really begin thinking you have to change your style completely. With the water control, I also found that painting realistic hair can be super soothing and easy ( tried it with my students and they loved it). I will make a video about that another time if this could help. Till then, don't get discouraged and you will improve 🙌
Very beautiful, can you draw me a picture, please, aunty
