Zheng Zhi Xiao's " The Love You Can't Get (得不到的愛情) " from "Shanghai Jazz: Musical Seductions from China's Age of Decadence" (www.shjazz.com) with old images of Shanghai.
Before the communist took over, China was very Westernized. That was one of the reasons the communist revolution took place, and drove out all the foreigners and the chinese elites.
Well, I wouldn't go as far as to say China was very westernized. Small enclaves in certain major cities were very westernized and they were very exclusive.
A portion of Shanghai was under the control of a micro-state called the Shanghai International Settlement, set up by the UK and US. However, unlike most concessions (instead of partitioning China Western nations were content to just set up several bases on the coastline and a few in-land and dominate trade) Shanghai was under the control of a council of businessmen, which allowed its economy to go full on laissez-faire. As it was generally neutral it became the centre of business in East Asia, which also attracted a lot of cultural development, resulting in Shanghai Jazz and that weird scene at the start of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
Great, now I envy my grandpa, he spent his youth hopping between Shanghai and Japan back then before WW2. What a classy era, even the old family photos show it. If only guys could go back to wearing suits, and women classy dresses.
This song is on the CD, Shanghai Jazz, produced by John Huie. It's available for sale online on his website. Go search for it, I can't paste the link in the comments. Alternatively, if you live in Singapore, you can pick it up at any That CD Shop outlet.

Of all the things I never expected to exist, chinese jazz was pretty high up on that list.
Not complaining.

huh. I never would've imagined.
Thanks for the impromptu history lesson.

Shanghai was particularly Westernized.

Hopefully this could become a new trend and fashion

For love you can't get it's remarkably upbeat. Love it.
This is SO Good! Her soft, soothing vocals in conjunction with excellent solo's by the musicians make this a fine piece of music!
